So here is a question, are your taste decided by console or by genre?
My own tastes are decided by genre. Any system with any amount of JRPG's in its library will be bought by me regardless of how many games of other genres it has or if it only has one or two JRPG's. I am in nobodies "Camp" so to speak. I eventually plan to get all the 3 player's console's at one time or another. If they cater to my needs, then I will get it, otherwise it will be ignored by me.
What about your tastes?

I think you are comparing apples to oranges here. I know VERY few people who will play every game on a console, irregardless of its genre or quality. Hardware is a preference, and while you do see certain genres pop up with more frequency on certain hardware, that still leads to genre being the deciding factor.
Me, I just play games. Of any sort, of any genre (but horror), and in any form.

There are certain game genres I mostly avoid - like Sports - similar to any other artistic pursuit (I don't listen to country western music and I don't like splotchy "modern" art).
I guess you could say genres help me define what I won't play, and I might gravitate toward RPGs, but neither genre nor console exhaustively define what I will play or where I will play it.
All that matters to me is the individual game.
That said, I really would like Sony to die in a fucking fire.

I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but even I don't really want that. I just wish that when they do bullshit (like promise a lot of features and then only deliver a very small subset) that somebody besides us would call them out on it.
As far as genre vs. console... I'm a racing game fanatic. Whether I get a 360 or a PS3 several years down the road (when they come down in price) will hinge upon Forza 2 vs. GT5. And right now Forza 2 is looking not too shabby.

I'm not a Nintendo fanboy. Or any other kind of fanboy. In fact, I even consider a PSP game as my GOTY pick for 2006.
I still utterly hate SCEA, Inc. as a corporation.
Not as much as EA, but they are just a very close runner up.
I buy consoles and handhelds that have exclusive games I want to play. This usually consists of most genres, I'm not really picky. The only genre I really don't like is sports.

I usually hold off on getting a console until there is a game on it that I absolutely need. If ya know what I mean.

I used to just buy every system without really thinking about it (outside of gameboy remakes). This generation was the last, no PSP though tempting and definetely no PS3 this time. I think I'll be a little sad when DMC4 comes out. It will be the first time I won't be able to play a console game I want because I don't own the system
I buy a console when it has a lot of games which I like.
When I own said console, I then buy games which I like.
Does anyone hold a contrary position to that?
Yes, I do. So does Japan.
Sometimes, I buy a console if there's even one game I want to play. I desperately want a Wii (which I still cannot find) and currently I care only about Zelda: Twatlike Princess.
When The Matrix came out on DVD in Japan, PS2 sales went through the roof. For a DVD, not even a game.
So I think there are many people that buy consoles contrary to your own philosophy.

With the notable exception of the Wii, I always get in to consoles late in the game after they have their libraries fleshed out. I've never bought/asked for a non Nintendo console because they always have all the games I want to play on them (except for GTA, hooray sandbox violence!).
So I sortof choose on a console...but only because it has the games I want.

I’m no fan of any hardware at all. I’ve been the one guy on the boards whose motto has always been. “Hardware doesn’t mean shit. It’s all about the games. If it’s a good game then it’s a good game regardless of who made it or what hardware it’s on.â€
