You should put it into perspective that this isn't necessarily just a Microsoft issue. There's a lot of licensing laws that change when you go overseas that muddle the entire system.

Sony will likely have the same issues as rules and regulations vary between regions. You also have licensing to contend with aswell.

When I was stationed in Korea I didn't have access to the video section on the PSN. I didn't even know it existed until I read about it online about six months after it came out. When I came back to the US the little icon appeared, so I imagine they just blocked it by IP.

It has nothing to do with Microsoft, it's a licensing issue.

    Just starting?

Hell, I've been disliking them since the 80s man.

Contact netflix. The same restrictions apply to the PS3.

I would have gone with "Beaten like a ten dollar whore".

Also yes, licensing issues.. I think it's possible to get around a number of these issues with the PS3 though, if you create a profile with a US address. Don't quote me on that though.

There are ways. Proxies are not new but as far as I know generally fall under the same forum rules as ROMs. Morally justified or not, it's probably illegal so let's not go there.

If it's Netflix you're worried about they ship to APO. Gamefly too for that matter. I'm not sure where you're stationed though. I can't attest to the European theater.

A while ago I created a US profile to play the Little Big Planet beta, but that's all I did. I suppose a user could get around an ip check by using a vpn provider, there are actually quite a number of vpn providers in the US and UK the last time I checked. Not useful for playing online though since your traffic is going around the world.

(edit: plus, to my knowledge the ps3 can't connect to a vpn so your router or firewall would need to be a bit fancy and support vpn's.. draytek routers support vpns for example, alternatively if the pc has two nics in you could connect the pc to a vpn then share the connection on the second nic to the ps3 hooked up via a crossover cable... all fun)

Stuff being on the store page is handled different than other things. Probably because the reason certain things are put on one country store page and not on others is a marketing thing most often(Don't want to release a demo so far ahead of the release of the game that everyone has forgotten about it), instead of legal stuff. So yeah, it often works for demos and betas but not so much the other stuff.

I highly recommend Gamefly in your position. Get a two game plan, finish one, and play the other while waiting for the turnaround. I don't use the service now that I'm in the US, but it was really nice when I was in Korea. I played a lot of the big PS3 games of 2007 and 2008 because of Gamefly, when I had basically zero chance to buy them.

Definitely worth checking out at least.

Call me crazy, but you'd imagine that (for people living on a base) that MS could be convinced to slide a few foreign IP addresses into the 'American' pile for service men and women abroad.

I guess if you got your internet through a local company that might be difficult. But it sounds to me like exactly the kind of thing a PR person would be motivated to push for if it's limited to a few IP addresses at a base or something.

Agreed. While I'm of the opinion that region locking is a steaming pile of shit, I can accept that companies have the right to sell stuff how they want to. However, region locking with something as easy to spoof as an ip address is total idiocy. Available features should be tied to the account your using, not the network you're on.

The complete disdain such a setup shows towards servicemen may not be the biggest crisis facing the world, but it should really be something that content distributors take into account. If dude is willing to risk getting shot for his country, he should at least be allowed to enjoy the same privileges those of us at home do.

I highly doubt it's a case of retailers simply saying "we don't want to sell stuff to people abroad because we have an irrational fear of revenue streams". It's a licensing issue.

It might be a good opportunity for good PR.

On the other hand, it could be a technical nightmare for some reason. I guess I don't know a thing about how American soldiers get their internet when they're abroad. Hell, it could be a weird government-side issue just as much as it's MS's 'fault'.

I only know PS3 is better as far as actual discs goes because no region locks for games.

Otherwise, the only truly sort of free region thing is a PC or a PSP. Sadly with the DSi Nintendo no longer fits in that camp anymore.

In Korea a Korean ISP called SSRT provided internet on base, at the four bases I worked at or lived on while I was there. Actually while I was there they blocked VOIP services for a while, making a ton of people lose their VONAGE phones, which pissed off tons of folks.

Apparently an AAFES official got convicted of taking bribes to keep the ISP on military bases, but I had already come home by this point.

As stated Sony is better as far as physical games (no region lock) and psn games because you can easily create accounts for different areas and can buy crap from there if you used a pre paid card.

They are no better in regards to movies and netflix though as those use ip checks.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
