I would like to take this moment to rescind my disdain for Sten. On my "asshole" playthrough, I easily maxed his Love/Hate meter by halfway through the game, topping it off with his personal quest. If you chose the right selections, he throws Approval points at you in the dozens.
Sten conversation spoiler:
It also didn't hurt to be a female so that you get an early discussion with him on the notion of being both a woman and a Grey Warden.

I mean fine, have a misogynist character, that is fine with me. But Sten is all, "women can't fight... and you can fight... so... "

Does anyone know if using the respec mod on your character after doing the Mage tower removes those permanent increase stats?
I used the respec potion - it takes into account the points you got from any other source including books... so when I reset to level 1 my attributes started out at something like 19/18/18/17/18 or something along those lines.
So in short, it leaves you with the extra points and won't screw you over, but you don't get to reassign the points at all, unless you use the reset point glitch.
I'm not-so-patiently waiting for the mod community to create the greatest mod in the history of everything that has ever happened:
Alternate origin mod, with the first one they develop (or maybe second, so it gets the proper amount of shine and tweaking) is the opportunity to play thru this game as a Golem.
On a related note, I Shale
I'd gladly pay money if Bioware did this themselves.

On Landsmeet:
I think I need to start actually putting talent points into coercion. First playthrough as super nice Dwarf Noble Warrior had me tell everyone (and get backed up about it) that Loghain enslaved elves, tortured a noble's son and imprisoned a templar / freed an apostate and the bastards STILL chose him over me. I had to fight his entire mob before having to kick his ass in a one on one duel.

Did you remember to finish out those quest lines? If all you do is save the people in the jail but don't turn in the various quests (Visit the tortured noble's father, the templar's sister, etc) then those people won't know about it and won't support you. If you do turn in the quests, then they thank you, ask if there is anything they can do for you, and you ask that they drop support for Loghain.

I did all the quests AND turned them in, and the only thing that derailed me at the landsmeet was Anora coming in after my arguments and saying essentially, "Fuck this dwarf, my father rocks and would never imprison me!". Then during the vote, I "won" like 5-2 BUT STILL HAD TO FIGHT EVERYONE.
Between Anora's sudden Judas impression and the confusing "vote" I somehow lost, I'd say the landsmeet was a bit fucked.
It was very frustrating at the end when you are walking through the castle to get to the roof (to fight the dragon) to see all the chests filled with CRAP.... Like, armor and weapons i was looting at the beginning of the game. I really thought that there would have been some decent stuff in there. Really upset me at the wrong time (end of game)... why even provide crap at this point in the game, its useless
The "army" mechanic was pretty fun... but it seems like certain armys are NOT good for the scenarios. The mages LOVED to fireball stuff i was tanking, so i was dying to my own support. When i used mages i had to switch everyone to range. Then i tried the elfs at one point where you fight a few small dragons and they were useless.... I died, restarted and spawned mages, they did the job.
The final archdemon battle was pretty epic... I think it lasted about 5-15 minutes (lots of pausing) and my healer died about 25% into the battle, which got scary. I was really hoping for a CGI cutscene of the dragons death, similar to the trailer they released.
I immediately wanted to buy and play Mass Effect... i had no idea bioware games can be this engaging if you actually spend the time to listen to dialog (im a skipper in most games)
Incredibly easy. Unless you're on Nightmare maybe I guess they give you so many tools to slant the final fight in your favor it defies belief. Nevermind that the game balance is completely fucked in the first place so unless you've completely botched your build you should be able to spank him even without the extra help.

Was it not that you "lost", or that Loghain challenged you. I believe that whether you win or lose the vote, the losing side will attack (I attacked Loghain since I lost the vote) and it will still come down to you going mano-a-mano.

yeah the losing side is all "man fuck these bitches" until whatever-her-name-is is like "quit ruining the carpet and settle this like men."
edit: actually
are there any consequences to refusing the duel and just offing him right there? or does it end the same way? I never tried that.

Anyone starting a new game, I highly recommend you steal from the Quartermaster in Ostagar for the belt. Relatively useful and it's the only available belt for that part I think.

Well, she does have a point. Blood is really hard to get out of anything, let alone carpet.

Landsmeet:
Hmm, I'm pretty sure I had to get all bitchy about losing. Could be wrong though. Going for a wanker mage playthrough now so see how the Landsmeet goes that time.
End Boss:
I have never used a bow (except for the quest in which you have to have one on your PC) the entire game and then I got to this fight. Morrigan had left me so the only range I had was Wynne. What really annoyed me was this was the point that i noticed I could call in an army. I accidently hit Dwarves and couldnt tell them to fuck off to let the Dalish in. It took about 15 minutes to damage that dragon enough to get him to come back.

they're arrayed around the periphery of the roof. You can turn them and fire them at the demon for 40 or so damage a pop on hard mode. It speeds up phase 1 and 3 quite a bit.
Of course you can also never find them because the game never really tells you they're there or how to use/repair them (traps skill apparently) and win conventionally, which isn't really harder but takes more time and more potions

about end battle mechanics:
There's ballistas all over the place (there's at least 3 I can specifically remember, and I'm pretty sure there's a few more). They're especially useful when the dragon flies over to the area that you can't reach by foot (at least I couldn't find a way). It was especially bad for my group because my only decent far range attacks were magic missle, frost shock and blizzard.)

Is the phase 2-3 transition actually damage-dependent? I thought it was just based on how many waves of dudes you killed. I didn't do very much to him at all during P2 the first time I fought it.

That's likely why. I've only seen that episode once.

Ostagar is the place in the beginning of the game. Orzammar on the other hand you gain access to through the Frostback Mountains.
