What is Devil's Tuning Fork you ask? It is a game created by 15 DePaul University's College of Computer and Media students for the Independent Games Festival Competition. Taken from Official website (http://devilstuningfork.com/index.php)
What if you saw the world with your ears? Devil's Tuning Fork is a first-person exploration/puzzle game in which the player must navigate an unknown world using visual sound waves. Inspired by M.C. Escher’s classic optical illusion and the echolocation of dolphins, The Devil’s Tuning Fork allows the player to explore a new mode of perception through sound visualization.
As a mysterious epidemic causes children everywhere to fall into comas, one child wakes up in an alternate reality. It is up to this child, the player, to determine the cause of the epidemic and save the other children trapped here. By way of the devil's tuning fork, a magical instrument that allows the player to perceive sound waves, the player must find all the children and successfully escape this alternate reality, thereby waking up from the coma.

I really hope that Valve gets wind of this and does what they did with portal. This game could turn out amazing with valve behind it. What do you all think?
Ps. I am in no way affiliated with this project or the school in anyway, just a guy who thought this was some cool stuff.
Pps. This is my first OP, so if anyone would like to give me some feedback that would be much appreciated.
Well, generally threads that do nothing but promote your own creation are frowned upon.
But this sounds pretty awesome.
Edit: doubly awesome, seeing as you're not actually selling anything. I clicked and was prepared to drop $5 or $10 but it seems to be free.

The only way quality indie material will ever be discovered is when the creators have enough guts to post it in a popular place like this, and I applaud them for doing so.
Not a huge deal, but when I set it to windowed mode, played for a little bit, and then exited with alt+F4, it crashed.
I have Visual Studio so I hit debug on the crash message, and got:
Unhandled exception at 0x00406f9c in game.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000000.

Don't let the man keep you down, bro.
Except this is keeping penny arcade down by this op getting free advertising. And if this thread gets free advertising, why should the advertisers that pay pay when they can just make threads in the forums for free? At least I think that's how it works. So generally you PM a mod first and get mod approval.
Sounds neat, I'll probably check the youtube when I go home.
I am actually in no way involved with the project, I just thought they could use some more exposure. I originally found out about it on fidgit, the sci-fi channel blog, and thought it was cool enough to post.I did find a feedback page here: http://www.devilstuningfork.com/feedbackform.php
I just love to support indie devs so that ideas like portal can get out to the masses.
Edit: If I am doing something wrong it is completely unintentional. Seeing as how it is free I didn't think it would be a problem but will contact a mod first next time to make sure.
Edit#2: Just brushed up on the forum rules, and added to my OP saying that I have nothing to do with the project in any way. Thank you all for straightening me out.
Looks alright, but it seems like they're just using the sound gimmick as an excuse to have funky textures. It would be more interesting if you needed sound in a more meaningful way.
Once again this is not my work, and I take no credit for it.
The inspiration behind portal was a groups final project at digipen that used the mechanics that were to be in portal. the game is called narbacular drop and is freeware. It was very rough and limited, but valve hired the entire group. The students then went on to create portal. I think that if a large company got involved like valve did with the students who made narbacular drop, then they could flesh out the concept more and create a great game.

I also don't see why Valve needs to be involved.
My thoughts exactly.
I loved the bit with the mirror and the gong, but other than that the video basically said to me "it's like you're playing a FPS with a flashlight instead of a gun, except the 'flashlight' mechanic exists so that we can fuck around with cool visuals".
Well, I would have loved to play more than a minute of this, but between the mouse pointer vanishing and the mouse look being stuck on always quickly scrolling all the way up, I'm going to pass, thanks.

This looks amazing. I wonder if they took any inspiration from Metroid Prime 2's echo visor? I always thought there might be a great seed of a concept there.
I don't think anyone should get too up in arms about it being unstable. Remember, they made it in six months: probably six jam-packed, skin-of-your-teeth sleepless months.
It's a hard enough effort to make something like that at all, let alone in six months: and to make it stable when your approach was rapid prototyping seems to involve another whole mountain of effort that can approach the amount of time it took to create the original work: time that they just didn't have if it was a school project. For six months worth of effort, it's darn impressive! Well done.
Downloading now to play later, but just from that video I'd like to see a little more synesthesia. More colours, especially in the "bad floor tiles" sensor.
Also v1.1 isn't available, only 1.0

Sadly I couldn't get it to work with my 7600GT... it seems I'm lacking Shader Model 3.0... or at least the game thinks I am.
