    Probably doesn't help much now, but you need the axe to get the other two spells. (get the axe by walking north of the island monster's island after you've freed the sprite)
    Cut down the tree with a bird in it to get a heal spell.
    Cut down all the other trees to help the kid repair his house to get a shield spell.
    Then there's the spell that makes youy shoot fireballs which you find in the three knight tower.

    I never had a chance to play MM9 on an Xbox but there was a really irritating input delay with the PS3 version
