Thing is you really need 4 infected to be able to stop a half decent team.

If you only had two, by the time you got a pounce/smoke whatever on someone, you would have already been shot off and your teammate would have taken their chance and been killed too.

With 4 you can coordinate to really cripple team by keeping stragglers behind and setting up a trap for the guys coming to save them, pounce/smoke unboomered guys so their teammates can't see them etc.
