If you beat him now though you can fuse him and completely break the game for the next 40 levels. He comes at level 60 or something.
How can I fuse him? I thought you had to be the demon's base level to fuse.
Fiends are unique. Every 7th fusion you fuse on a full moon (that or new, I've forgotten) and you'll get a special demon. You can get zombies, Evils, or Fiends you've defeated. They come at set levels and you don't need to match them. The way to know you're getting a fiend is that the fiend music will start to play. If it isn't you're going to get an Evil or a zombie. Some Evils are pretty good but every zombie is shit. Reset if you get one of those.
You can ask Victor what fusion you're on. You want it to BE the multiple of 7, so don't try and make it if he says you have 14. You want him to say 13.
This is a really hard decision. I mean, as much as I hate breaking games, Devil Summoner would be the perfect game to have an unstoppable badass minion.
The game itself is really good. If you like the general formula of Shin Megami Tensei, I would pretty readily recommend it as long as you don't completely despise the first-person dungeon crawling.
No real opinion on the story, as I'm mostly just skipping through it, but it seems like pretty standard stuff through the first four or so sections.
But there's plenty of stuff to do with fusion and sidequests and everything. My only real complaint is that resource management (SP and items) never seems like that big of a deal, but that's extremely minor.
This is a pretty key point. If you go into Strange Journey expecting it to be like Nocturne, you'll be sorely disappointed. A lot of what made Nocturne awesome is absent in SJ.
But hey, if you actually liked SMT 1 go ahead and get it.
Well the thing about SMT1 is it's confusing as fuck because it takes forever for the map to load and everything looks the same. The map in SJ is more like Etrian Odyssey though, so it's much harder to get lost. Also games these days aren't as lacking in the guidance department as they were when SMT1 came out. SMT1 I had no idea what I was doing half the time. It was like Dragon Warrior 2 when I got the boat except way more difficult.
God that was the worst thing. It was like fighting at the end of Nocturne with increased encounters on. At the end I was just spamming instant death over and over because the fights would not end.
This is a pretty key point. If you go into Strange Journey expecting it to be like Nocturne, you'll be sorely disappointed. A lot of what made Nocturne awesome is absent in SJ.

Explain please.
From what I've played, the main points are:
The brevity of Nocturne's dialogue is gone.
The Press Turn System is gone and it's replacement is not as good.
About 80% of the soundtrack has that annoying chanting. It is terrible and will drive you mad.
The removal of these three things was enough to dive me away from the game.
Is it so much to ask that we get the Press Turn system back? Like seriously, stop messing with it Atlus. It was perfect the first time. It made some sense to mess with it in Persona, but why didn't Survivor have it? It would've been great. Instead it was more random, like you'd randomly get an extra turn. No, don't do that. Press Turn. It rocked. Bring it back and don't screw with it.
I liked SMT1. It has a lot of flaws, but it's still a good game. SMT2 fixed a lot of them, and this seems to have fixed the last few big unfun problems that SMT2 had left
Just wondering: In Persona 4, if you let it go on too long and the person you're meant to rescue dies, but you've been grinding, when you go back a week, do you keep your levels or lose them?

Immune to attack, holy and dark, reflecting fire and bullets, and resisting electricity, ice and wind... At any rate, an amazing penis.

I'm also sure some people somewhere will find it in themselves to complain that SJ's fusion is a step back from the choose-your-own-skills of Devil Survivor, but it's really designed to please both crowds. Those who don't want to spend a lot of time on it can use the Demon Sources to bolster the skill sets and call it a day, but for vets who want more customization, all the standbys are there.

Ok Atlus when I said not to use the fifth character slot for MYSTERIOUS BLONDE BOY, I DIDN'T MEAN YOU COULD DO THIS.
That whole thread is a great read. Kind of spoilery though. Also nice to know that NichM's apparently an uber SMT fan, being familiar with Soul Hackers and all.
He posts here, rarely, but nowhere near as frequently as on other forums. It's weird; it's like we all had our own favorite forums before we started working at Atlus, and we kind of staked them out once we started.

Because seriously you would get multiple fights for every one encounter and they happened every three steps regular.

SMT1 is not a good game.

Interesting read on how they get their demonary info, since no, they don't just phone up Atlus JP.
Awesome Nintendo Power interview with SJ's director, who was the design lead on Nocturne, so he's not completely out of his league:

The music's far from horrid, just different. He's trying something new, and you can't fault him for that. I like what I've heard.
No, it's not Nocturne caliber, but really, what is?
well, it should be Nocturne-caliber, considering it's like, its successor and all.
