Haha, that battle against one of the boss Oni in the first area was way too close. He and his buddies took down all of my team, except for me and my Pixie, and ripped through all of my healing items. Now I'm about a mile from a terminal on Sector A B2F, at 50% health, with 3 demons, and a single life stone
So in Strange Journey, what determines which skills get passed on through fusion? As far as I can tell it's not randomized, which could make passing useful stuff up through successive demons a bit more difficult.

If you use a Demon Source, the resulting skill inheritance is definitely randomized. Without that, I have no clue. It's already annoyed me that Koppa Tengu's Tarukaja doesn't pass on.

Just cancel and re-use the source until the right skills show up.
So, I fought Mr. Bison Wrestler. I guess I was underleveled, as he wiped out all my demons, and I'm left with a sliver of health. I figure screw it, I'll just hit Auto, die, and go grind a few levels before trying again. I hit Y, WHACK, I kill him. Figures.
I ended up gaining four levels, of course none of my demons did. On the bright side though, that opened up a lot more fusions.
I don't know who these assholes with Rampage are but I hate them so
Damn that is a grim game over screen
Also I really really like this game so far
Yeah that Rampage is brutal. So my role is luck support. Just got to Bootes right now. So far loving this game. Though I haven't played too many SMT games before.
So how is Strange Journey? I'm picking up my DSi XL in an hour or so and I've been looking at this.
Basically, it's like Nocturne right? Mostly fighting and some story? Or is there a pretty decent amount of story happening?
It's like the SNES SMT titles, except good. Decent amount of story and fighting, first persona view, and sort of a modified Devil Survivor combat system.

By "except good" you mean with maps that don't make you throw controllers?
The only complaint with the story so far is that some parts remind me too much of Star Trek.
That and the fact that because they've had time to work out the gameplay it's more defined. SMT1 never really felt like it was finished to me. It just had so many oddities, like the map or the fusion system. Also I don't remember clearly, but I think you couldn't level up demons in the old games which made everything a huge pain.

You couldn't, but it was fine there with how often you ran into new demons to fuse together. You couldn't actually level demons until Nocturne, maybe the Demikids games, unless you count Persona.
I wish that dungeon crawler minimaps would automap land you've looked at, instead of just the squares you passed through. I'm not falling through every hole or walking into every damage tile just to have a complete map

You couldn't actually level your Personas until Persona 3, either. They had 'ranks,' that indicated what skills they'd learn, but a level five Persona stayed a level five Persona.

I will do this. I did it in Etrian Odyssey, too. My maps have to be complete, no matter the cost.
Edit: Are there secret passages? Because if there are, I need to bump up against every wall.

Yeah, but wouldn't their stats also go up each rank? So it's basically leveling anyway, despite the level number not going up.
Man, I really wish Strange Journey let you rebuy old demons. I want to get a Harpy for the High Pixie, but I'm red, so I have to fuse her. I cannot for the life of me remember what I used the first time, though.

It's really good, there's a lot of exposition at the start and it really helps create atmosphere. The only bad thing I have to say about it is, man, it's got the Atlus Translation Thing going. "This is too much" is a bit embarrassing to read, and people keep saying it!
You may also want to prepare yourself to be somewhat bored for the first five hours or so, until the dungeon crawling/demon fusing starts to pick up. It's not a bad start, it's just a lot of groundwork.
I think I've decided that I like PRESS TURN more than this new system, but I do like adjusting my party to include more neutral types, I like that side to it.

Lucas's Franklin Badge reflected the lightning back!
I hate that I keep feeling like I've messed up my demons
I'm only at the beginning where
you have to look for the energy source under Antlia
and I already want to go back and plan out specific demons with specific skill sets
I think that could pretty much be a constant feeling. Even if you do fuse the perfect demon, you will dump them eventually for better ones. Luckily, there's over 300 demons..

I fused this weird looking fuzz ball with an elephant trunk thing.
At first I was all like, "What? Vulnerable to magic? What's the point?"
Then, all of a sudden he's like
"MEGATON SMASH YOUR FACE IN!"
And demons just disintegrate from his fists. Which is odd, because he doesn't have any fists.

Lots of interesting designs there. The writer even owns a P3 tarot deck, supposedly.
Also, I really preferred Persona 2's tarot art to Persona 3 and 4's.

That pixie had Dia, but sometimes whoever she was healing needed a boost with medicine/life stones, so that they/she could live long enough to heal
Sort of tempted to Neutral my way through just because it's the proper plot method, but at the same time Law and Chaos have some pretty nifty demons.

This game lives up to being SMT4, if you ask me
Just cancel and re-use the source until the right skills show up.
Any words of wisdom, people who got it before me?

You can also register your new demons so you can summon the version with better skills on it.
Ah, the Compendium. That thing I never opened because, seriously, what possible use could it have?
Go me.
If you don't have them registered, you can only get it at the state it was when you caught it.

I don't care much about that, it's not like the Harpy had any great skills.
There are but you get a prompt to examine them if you face them. So no bumping, but you still have to turn and stare at the wall.
