Hm, I used to own that book. I wonder where it went?

Anyway, it's not really science per se so much as it's history, but did you guys already see that the legend lives on from the Chippewa on down? Pretty neat photos if you like shipwrecks and such.

once at a forum I used to post at someone witnessed a duck violently attacking and then raping another duck and took pictures of it. It was pretty disturbing.

It's my theory that the shape of the head is because of something sharks have called Ampullae of Lorenzini. They're basically sensors that detect the electrical field given off by all living things. The hammer shape provides a greater surface area for the sensors, which would give the shark a great advantage in hunting over other predators and prey. This would also explain why they sweep their head from side to side.

but see, the cool thing about that article is that they didn't just theorize
they actually tested their theory and got evidence!
as I said in the OP there's been plenty of speculation on the matter including what you propose
and it's possible that those who subscribe to "your" theory are right, but I'm not aware of compelling research on the matter

The only evidence I really have is that the scanning motion they seem to use while hunting. Unfortunately it seems that not many people are interested in these wonderful creatures, something I chalk up to the lack of information on them in popular media. On another note, did anybody else notice how Shark Week this year seemed to be based on shark attack shows?

and there is shark research going on, just very little solid research into why hammerheads have such odd heads that I'm aware of

What makes plasma what it is?

It looks like a sort of liquid to me. But it's a different state of matter altogether! How can this be.

I thought it's been better since the Mythbusters hosted it, it just seemed like they were going back to shock tactics. There should be though, it would be something interesting to look into if I can get a job at Mote Marine.

i believe it is because the particles (valance electrons possibly) are in an even more excited state than when in vapor form

I thought a plasma was a gas where the particles were ionized, which at room temperature is a thing that is more for dissolved substances than gases.
