I've pretty much outgrown my current guitar in terms of skill, so I'm looking to buy a new one (electric) sometime in the next few months between around 300-350$ I thought some of you might have some suggestions? Also, we could discuss the hobby in general, yeah?
Anyway, I play folky/alternative/fingerstyle pretty damn well, and I'm kind of looking for one with a nice soft tone.
My first guitar was an acoustic Johnson, which is garbage, but I learned chords and basic fundamentals on it, and for the last few years I've been playing on a Squier Telecaster, which is also pretty poor.
Try a nice Les Paul. You can get some really nice ones in the price range you are looking for. My friend has one and it's pretty nice. and it was only around $200
So I have a guitar question. I need new pickups for my SG. I want some decent ones but I don't want to spend massive amounts of money. What should I get

Ive heard good things about the 490R and 490T alnico magnet humbuckers, but for all I know that could be what you already have on your SG. Anyway, I believe the words used to describe them were "unbelievably creamy, yet crunchy in overdrive".
Edit: Also, where can I find these les pauls for my price range? I can't find one for under 500$.
I'll check that out. I've been looking at musiciansfriend.com for a while now because they offer free shipping usually.
Oh shit I forgot about AGILEs...that's my best bet right now. They are amazing for the price. I almost got an Agile Valkryie a few years ago but got a shittier guitar instead because I was retarded.
Less than $400 out the door. That's a fat mexican strat which means I can dick around with the humbucker or single coil pickups and still keep a pretty awesome strat tone.

Long time ago when I played the guitar, I had a Jackson (Pro Dinky Reverse) that was an absolutely awesome guitar. I picked it up for about $300, and I was quite pleased with it for quite some time.
Now I play the bass though, so my opinion in this thread doesn't really matter now does it.
Ooo I like that last one. Hand filed frets sounds nice as a small bonus. If I play too fast on my current electric the frets can scrape by left thumb at the joint.

Jacksons are my favs. I love the Dinky's most of every thing.
Quick question, my parents got me a guitar for christmas, but I dont really have the money to pay for lessons. What are some good songs to start with, but still fun to play? I will say that I'm more partial to picking than strumming chords, but anything relatively easy/fun would be good.

I have a Valkyrie III, and it's fantastic. You likely will need to change the electronics, because they use $3 chinese pickups and pots, but you're getting a very solid instrument for not very many dollars.

Nirvana stuff is usually pretty easy. Grab an unplugged album and play along. Alice in Chains works too (not as easy though).

I'm looking at replacing the pickups in my Agile 2000 or whatever. The low end les paul.
How should I educate myself in pickups and what they do and what kind i want for what sounds and things.

harmony central has a giant review database that's semi-decent and it covers just about all pickups ever
basically the first thing you gotta ask is what sound you like

I'm looking for a really heavy sound, as I will be playing metalcore.
I want to sound like a cool knowledgeable guitar player, but I just have an Epiphone SG copy (the goth series lolz) with I think Seymour Duncans. It's served me well, but my input jack freaks out and the pickup selector can be a little spotty.
I think an amp has a huge factor in your sound. My guitar sounds totally different through a half stack than it does through my 45 watt practice amp.

if you don't care about having a clean sound at all, get some emg active pickups
I am more goth than you.
EDIT: Looking at the camwhore thread, you are definitely whiter than me.
