[EDIT] Another reason I am enjoying this news is that it shows that the Giantbomb guys aren't really behind the podcast split idea, since they seem to be trying hard to avoid it. I'm glad it's more likely to be pressure on them from the Whiskey Media money folks than their own horrible, horrible idea.
But the Whiskey Media folks are the ones who announced this whole deadline thing
It was the Giantbomb guys who came up with the "5K subscribers before this deadline and the Bombcast stays free" idea.
They clearly don't want to split it.
How do you know that
First time I saw it was the Whiskey Media twitter
During the Big Live Live Show Live, Ryan Davies said something along the lines of "We just basically told Whiskey Media we're doin' this. Five thousand subscribers by 10am tomorrow and the Bombcast stays free. Uhhh ... ok?"
And Whiskey Media just went along with it.
That was actually on the Whiskey Media twitter long before Ryan announced it on the Live show.

Yes, well, it happened long before Ryan announced it live on the show too. He was just telling the story on the show .... ugh
My point is, Giantbomb is good peoples.
In more interesting news, the second to last Retronauts is up and it appears to be three hours on the NES. Nice considering the last three shows haven't been particularly retro.

I'm sad that Retronauts is going away. Does anyone know if Jeremy Parish leaving 1up?
But payday on the 15th? Do that many people get paid on Wednesdays? The jobs I've worked and jobs that...pretty much everyone I know have worked, payday is always on Friday.
Um, many many people get paid every 1st and 15th of the month, rather than weekly or bi-weekly Fridays.
So did anyone listen to that Silent Hill 2 podcast I linked back (by Squadron of Shame)? Wondering if it was worth it or not.
Also, I still like my idea of a podcast that focused solely on RPG games, maybe deep discussions about classics like FFVII and Chrono Trigger. As long as the people involved could keep it casual but without reverting to annoying fanboy talk (ie FFVII vs FFVI, which girl they want to have sex with, etc), I'd listen to it.
As far as "casual" podcasts like GiantBomb, what's a similar group I should be listening to?
Yeah, it's sad to see Retronauts go but the writing was on the wall when there was about 1 episode per month. I hope Jeremy moves on to bigger and better things that aren't "In this Thread". God, what a stupid name for a horrible, hollow podcast. Once Retronauts is officially gone I'll probably drop that one too. I've only been sticking with it because I need stuff to listen to at work. Now I'm going to need some replacements.
What has the podcast world come to? Retronauts gone, people paying for Giant Bomb..... You maniacs. You blew it up.

Dude, I'm always plugging it because it's so damn good... Try Radio Free Nintendo. It's not just Nintendo talk and they have some great discussions. It's pretty funny too. Everyone that has tried it after my recommendation has loved it.

Is this them? If I'm reading this right, they haven't updated since 2007....?
I tried out Radio Free Nintendo, and it reminds me a lot of Gamers With Jobs. There's nothing overtly wrong with it, but it's just really dry and chatty, without any notable personality or humour.
I'll stick with it for now, though.

The Silent Hill 2 podcast was pretty good, but I've listened to a couple and it's not their best
It's pretty clear that they all have at least some level of distaste for Japanese game design
Which is great for me, really, because that's about where I'm at. As much as I love Silent Hill 2 it had a lot of problems design-wise
So what I'm saying is if you go into it expecting nothing but praise, you're gonna be disappointed
Now if you want nothing but praise from those guys, try their Eternal Darkness podcast. Makes me wish I had actually played that game!

The Bombcast is officially free for everyone... Forever. Thanks everyone! A replacement for subscribers (something new!) coming next week.

That party was wicked good fun. My lady and I are in that highlight vid, at the point where we all jumped at the same time with a very drunk Will Smith. I'm the tall duder in the hoodie.
Meeting the Giant Bomb crew (as well as the various Whiskey Media staff), sloshed form or not, was awesome; they're all very stand-up fellows. Vinny has to be one of the friendliest people I've ever met.

Why no paypal?
And to bring it back to Whiskey Media, someone compiled a highlights of the block party video.

Haha, Jake Rodkin sighting at 1:06.
And if this is the penultimate episode, then they're ending with episode 99. They couldn't even get one more out just so they could end on 100?
It also won't let me download 98 at the moment.

Try this.
You promise they don't instantly love and praise every Nintendo-related game, right?

I promise. Cross my heart and hope to die.
Same reason I'm avoiding the PA thread.

I think they were pretty fair to it. Not glowing fanboy praise but not the kind of backlash you're talking about.
