I'm going to be visiting New York at the end of the month for three nights with my GF (she bought me rangers tickets for xmas) and I was thinking of stopping by Nintendo World. I've never been to New York, and I've never been to a giant store dedicated to the one thing that made my childhood complete.
For those that have been there, could you tell me if it's more than what they are showing on the website? http://www.nintendoworldstore.com/
The website simply shows a station for each console where people can get together and play, and I assume later buy, Nintendo games. Since I can get these games almost anywhere, I am more interested in rare Nintendo merchandise. Is there a store where I can buy crazy, hard to find Nintendo figures, apparel, and the like?
No, it's where you buy super common t-shirts and such, though they will often have higher quality Nintendo watches, pens, etc.
It is exactly what's on the site, nothing more or less. I had a great time there but that was because it was the opening day so there were a ton of like-minded folk.

It's a store, not a theme park.
They have some games to play and some tshirts and toys.
It's a good store, I found my extendable Hori stylus' there, but other than that and maybe a sweatshirt or two it doesn't have anything that exclusive. Also I was disappointed in the lack of people playing DSs there. I was hoping there would be full PictoChat rooms or some download multi player. Other than an average demo station, there isn't anything else. Still worth a visit though.
It's a cool little store. If you're going to Rockefeller Center, you might as well stop by. However, the Toys R' Us in Times Square has a huge Wii area, and is a much cooler store in general.
Seeing a GBASP signed by Miyamoto is pretty cool, though.
I've always liked it, despite it not having a lot of exlcusive stuff. Theres a bunch of kiosks with games that arent tnormally demoed at EBs and Gamestops, which is nice. The "GBA Bar" lets you choose any GBA game you want to try out, which is really helpful. The only thing is that its a lot more Wii-focused now, although there still is some DS stuff.
Nintendo World is nothing but a normal store with extremely good supply of Nintendo games/hardware and a modest selection of memorabilia, all of which I suspect you could find online. It's not even "giant" - you see the background image of the front page? That's the entire floorspace of the store, and it's two stories high. I don't know how people build up these huge expectations. The only thing really useful about the place is that it's great for pre-orders.
The products they have there aren't exactly stellar or hard to find. I was slightly disappointed. I got a DS watch. They barely have any memoribilia outside of Mario stuff. Very little Zelda, no Metroid. I got Electroplankton though.

When I stopped in it was cool for the novelty, but it didn't really meet my expectations. I was hoping for 1) a number of people sitting around enjoying wifi DSing or 2) some interesting things I couldn't buy elsewhere. They didn't really have either of those... it was just a nice game store with average stock, dedicated to Nintendo.
The first time I was there it was around a Pokemon release. Everything was covered in Pokemon stuff, and they had a wall that appeared to have a miniature of every Pokemon for sale for ~$5/each. It would be cool to a Pokenut, but the thought of the amount of money it would take a kid to 'collect them all' was scary.
I can only echo what has already been said. There really isn't anything you can't find elsewhere. I saw a few tshirts and plushies that I haven't seen elsewhere, though you may be able to find them online. The problem for me is that I went the week after Christmas and it was packed to the gills. If you're going to be there you might as well stop by though. It's right at Rockefellar Center though, so you will be able to see that tree(if it is still there) or go ice skating.

Well I like it, although more as a swag center than anything else. There are the standard types of shirts, but I've gotten a few other articles of clothing and DS accessories that I've never seen elsewhere.
If you're coming to NYC anyway, you're going to come to Rockefeller Center regardless, so swing by and scope it out. Nothing crazy, but it's nice to not have to skulk all the way to the back of an EBStop just to find the Nintendo items.
Jeza, I don't think I'll find the NYC tax that disagreeable, seeing as I live in Ontario and pay a total of 14% tax. (It went down %1 last year when the Conservatives were voted in.)
Man, all I think about when I hear "Nintendo World Store" is all the exclusives. I guess you guys forgot about exclusive GBA and GBA SP colors from when it was known as Pokemon Center NY and the later DS exclusives. Also, exclusive GC games like PKMN Box. I managed to pick that rarity up from a traveling Nintendo World Store at some really scary place (a traveling Pokemon event stopping in Atlanta). Also, if anyone has Electroplankton on a store shelf, they do.

I was expecting a theme park, dammit!
Either way, I came away with a couple-a goodies, so it wasn't a bust.

This is a very informative video I found (even though it's IGN).

And, yes, Gulf War Game Boy.
Go to look around but just buy whatever it is you want online. The Japanese bookstore store across the street is much more fun.
I KISS YOU!
Thanks for all the responses, folks.

So is Nintendo World, but Kinokuniya... nice.
