It could be either, the PSP groups have done everything from translate Monster Hunter 2G, to hacking data into games, to making their own games

I was about to ask this, actually. It's like 15 dollars used, so I may pick it up anyway. I'm in the mood for a roguelike, but I didn't really like Shiren.
Chocobo Dungeon on the Wii has pretty good music, too.

So I know I am a little bit late to the party but I have been playing the hell out of Crisis Core recently.

And wow, I know the game was received well, but I havent enjoyed something from square like this in a long time. I never really liked the FF7 universe all that much, but this game changed that. And I think Zack is the only main char since Butz they didnt fail on.

I own it, but I've never actually gotten around to playing it. I'm in the middle of an FF9 replay, which will be followed by FF12 (which I will beat this time, darnit) in prep for 13 next year. Maybe I'll stick the Chocobo Dungeon in their somewhere ...

Fucking great music. It's like a "Best of FF" album, with everything from Clash on the Big Bridge to Vamo Alla Flamenco. Rydia's Theme? Sure. Loads and loads and loads of old FF tunes remastered with some cool sounding modern synths. There's not a single original track in the game I don't think - it's all rearrangements.

We are talking everything here, from the Summoned Beast Battle from FFX to Battle with the Four Fiends and Melodies of Life and FF5's Theme of Love. In many ways, Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon on the Wii is the best FF compilation album ever put out. Dissidia's OST could've learned a trick from that game, I think.

    Game's alright too.

You know what? Seeing that Chocobo's Dungeon box above...I'm gonna have to do a quick retrospective. For a game that's very near and dear to me...

    CHOCOBO RACING

    chocoboracingscreenshot.png

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HS-Z-Jrx0oE

Chocobo Racing is one of the best kart racing games ever. I mean it.

First of all, it's some great Final Fantasy fanservice. All the tracks and music in the game is classic FF stuff remixed. The basic racers are Chocobo, Mog, Golem, Goblin, Black Mage, White Mage, Chubby Chocobo, Behemoth, and Bahamut. You can also unlock Squall, Cid in a tank, a Moomba on foot, Cloud on his bike, a Cactuar on foot, Aya from Parasite Eve in a police car, the S.S. Invincible from FF3, an 8-bit Chocobo, and the guy from 3D World Runner for some reason.

The courses are fun and have plenty of hidden shortcuts. It even has its own Rainbow Road equivalent, complete with lack of rails when you need them most. And a twisty turny FF8 course playing the battle theme.

The power up/item system is my favorite, far superior to Mario Kart. All the items are different spells. Fire shoots a fireball in front of you, Blizzard drops an ice slick on the track, Haste speeds you up briefly etc. You can carry up to three of them dragging behind you. If you manage to pick up two of the same type, it upgrades to the second level - Fira, Blizzara etc. and has an increased effect. Level 3 generally affects everyone like the most powerful Mario Kart items, but the best thing is how you have to work at it to get there. Firaga is like a blue shell, hitting everybody as it blasts through the level. Thundaga zaps everyone with triple lightning bolts and makes them spin out. And since items are always dragging behind you, other people can steal them by riding up to you and touching them.

There's also an ability system. Each racer has an associated ability unique to them that charges up as you race and is usable any time once charged. Chocobo has a short burst of speed, Mog can fly for a short time to avoid traps, Goblin can steal an item from someone else. To be honest, the best one is Black Mage's, it powers up any items you collect by one level. Some abilities charge up faster than others - Bahamut's is a flare that makes everyone spin out, but is usable only once or twice per race. And you don't have to use a character's signature move, you could choose White Mage and use Golem's traction ability.

Finally it has a character creation system! Every time you beat story mode you are graded on your performance and can spend the points you earned on your racer's stats. You pick an existing character and can change their palette, pick a name, and adjust things like top speed and traction. I had a gold dragon I named Ultima with max stats...

To my knowledge it's only two player. I played with my friends all the time though, it's a great game. I would still recommend it to FF fans.

Fun fact, the code for both are almost identical. (obvious changes aside) same addresses for items, classes, abilities, etc. The devs must have had the source from FFT laying around still. Learned their mistake from 7 I guess.

Yes! Another Chocobo racing fan. I should have bought the video store's copy of it since I rented it a thousand time. It was certainly as good as Mario Kart, it just didn't have the recognizable faces that non-FF players would notice.

I have never played Chocobo Racing, but I will echo this sentiment.

    ---

I was actually going through the Chocobo Dungeon Wii soundtrack a while ago, and while I was impressed with the catalog, I don't remember really liking any of the arrangements.

About where on the spectrum of difficulty and general roguelikeness does the game fall compared to Izuna or Shiren? It's kind of sad that I hope it's super simplified and the answer is Izuna : (

Another thumbs up for FFF: Chocobo's Dungeon here. It was a really fun rental, plus there's a lot of challenging extra content if you want to go at it for the long haul. Great soundtrack, too; a lot of my favorite tracks were on there, and the version of Rydia's theme (called "A Night on Stella's Farm" here) is probably the best I've heard. Seriously, I was grinning from ear to ear the first time I heard it. The story's nothing to write home about, but the general cuteness factor is cranked to the max.

Speaking of the original PSX game, I've had it for a while, but never got around to playing it. I should remedy that soon.

The Chocobo's Dungeon game for the Wii is pretty great! It's definitely more on the forgiving end of the roguelike spectrum: there's banks for gil and items, and if you croak in a dungeon, you lose any consumables and cash you had on you, but you keep your equipment.

The presentation is cute and charming, and there's a simple implementation of the job system (with 8 or 9 jobs) and a neat equipment crafting system. TOTALLY worth the $15-20 it's selling for now.

Alright, I'm convinced: Vanille is the hottest of the group.

And a couple of new tidbits:

    1. It'll take over 130 hours to fully complete the game.

    2. There are many monsters that are impossible to defeat even with max equipment.

    3. There are monsters bigger than the Adamantoise (!)

    4. Vanille's summon was inspired by FFVI's Magitek armor. :)

Also, while not SE, White Knight Chronicles has been dated for 02/02/10, and has revealed its box-art.
