I got a review of IGN.

    They suck.

    CB is mindless fun.

I sort of expected it to be. Lots of platforming and mindless action with the ability to explore endlessly combined with the expected FF-quality story. If it is as such I might have to pick it up.

One thing about Crystal Bearers that's kinda jarring. The character lips aren't re-synched to English voice acting. I thought that was a Square Enix standard now. But I guess not.

That is annoying, especially considering the voice work isn't half bad!

At least the voice acting is decent. I'd rather have that than synced up mouth movement. Especially after the awful acting in X. I can't go through that again. I can't. If they recycled that clip of Yuna saying "Okay" in X-2, I will save as soon as possible and just stop playing for a week.

There are a couple (unintentionally) awkward lines, but the voice acting in X is so far from awful.

    It's not great either.

The best VAing in the series is a race between XII or Crystal Chronicles. XII should win because it has more than one actress though.

Ehhhhh, I really didn't think it was good. I don't know what it was exactly, but I just really didn't think any of the acting was above average at best. You know, it might not even be the voices I didn't like, it might have just been the dialogue. Some of that dialogue..... I don't know man. I wonder if anybody could've made it work. I kind of started tuning stuff out around the middle whenever it wasn't a scene involving Jecht. Jecht was pretty much the best character in the game.

So I was thinking, now that we've had retrospectives and talked about the whole series, the spin-offs, and now we're into the latest two titles to feature the FF name....what does it all mean?

Of course this is entirely subjective, but with the internet once again awash in "This is not the FF I loved!" nonsense that comes about with every single main game release, I thought it a good time to talk about what we expect in an FF title.

So, instead of using a particular game, let's just say that tomorrow SE announces Final Fantasy XV, but without a logo or a screenshot or even artwork.

What's the first thing that pops into your head as far as what you expect to see in the game? Is there a particular gameplay element that defines the series for you? Maybe it's just the iconic monsters and spells? Or perhaps your first thought is of who they'll get to sing the unnecessary JPOP track?

For me, my first thought is generally "Yay!", because regardless of what I do and do not like in a given FF game, they have time and again been games that I know I can safely through down full retail price on with a second thought. I know I will come away from it having enjoyed my time with the game, and generally thinking positively of it, even if it rarely makes my game of the year list.

Beyond that, all I expect at this point is that the combat will be different from last time, there's likely to be at least one drastic change that completely alters the way character advancement works, and that there'll be a lot of creatures and spells and even locations that reference the previous games.

I wouldn't say I'm particularly attached to any one element of the series beyond the high quality of the games, and the continuing trend of being at the top of the pile in a given generation of JRPGs. This is doubly true this generation, which has seen some decent games, but nothing which has really blown me away in terms of gameplay or story, and many which have made me wonder why I even play these games (Star Ocean, I'm looking at you)

I'm not sympathetic at all towards anyone who played SO IV after playing III.

The only thing I really ask out of any FF game is for it to not be XII. Or have Shiva Bike. Or be an MMO.

I expect a blond guy with spiky hair, giant chickens, busy clothing, blends of high technology and high magic, air ships, and a character named Cid. I also expect them to hit nearly all JRPG stereotypes at some point during the adventure, but to carry the whole story off in such a marvelously dramatic way that you never care. I also expect some kind of convoluted magic/class/items/etc system that is somehow rewarding to use despite it being mostly nonsense, and I expect to be able to complete the game but discover that there are tons of quests that are impossible to know exist unless you buy the strategy guide.

I also expect to feel sorely disappointed and bored somewhere in the middle but for everything to suddenly pick up in an unexpected way, and I expect mini-games and lots of characterization. And if it's X I expect to be unable to lose the final battle due to suddenly having "auto-life" and wondering why I even bothered to grind my characters, or why I have to press any buttons.

What I expect out of FF: Cactuars, Tonberries, a gigantic Cactuar, the Chocobo song, unskippable cutscenes, godawful mini-games, John DiMaggio (Although this is pretty recent), and someone that I'm supposed to think is the villain until it turns out he actually wasn't and the true villain is actually something stupid like a purple spider.

I like how most of those are just FF VI-VIII. Then you throw in the last one which is good for IV, IX, and X, and maybe XII? I guess.

Well 8 was the first one I played, so it skewed my views. I played the rest of the games after I finished 8. I actually almost never beat FF games. The only ones I've actually beaten are 1, 4, 6 but it was just a file on the cartridge when I rented it that I loaded up, 8, and 10.

Giant Cactuar should be in everything though. I don't care if it doesn't even make sense for him to be in the game's world, they will fit that wonderful creature in there. I demand it!

I like how he is pretty much the hardest fight in FF VI Advance.

It's so fitting and you might not know this Gilder but Cactaur's are the monster to grind in FF VI. They give no experience but instead give you 10,000 gold and 10 magic points. The highest level spells in the game only take either 50 or 100 points to learn.

You see, Cactaurs should be hard to kill because of their ridiculous Magic and regular Evade. Most attacks miss outright...Except they made a good ten attacks in the game unmissable. Most of Edgars tools, all of Sabin's blitzes, any hit by a few of Shadow's weapons, Throw, most Swdtechs, any hit with the offering equipped...

So it was divine justice when after grinding out ten Cactaurs in FF VI this giant mustachio'd motherfucker shows up when you enter the southern part desert you find them in and proceeds to demolish your party like no other.

I remember him being pretty easy in VIII after you figured out his gimmick.

It's the crazy stilted animation that makes them so endearing. I mean, it's cute and all in FF VI but when rendered in beautiful 3D it is something else. They are hilariously charming in Crystal Chronicles as well.

I was going to mention both of these things in a post, but I'm glad someone beat me to it.

I'm known in these circles for having a Saturday morning cartoon villain level of hatred for FFT, but allow me to actually air my legitimate concern over the remake.

FFT had a bunch of problems in my eyes, but let's focus on two related to these posts. One, the story is decently done but poorly translated, falling apart at places. Two, the game has decent sized loads whenever anything goes on.

So when it came time for the PSP port, most people were happy to see that the game was getting a fresh script, and some were happy about the voice acting... While I decided to give the game a fresh chance and saw that what was once a slightly below average script had turned into some sort of Vagrant Story on crack level of bad Shakespearian nonsense. FF XII got it right using some nice British voice actors and word selection in the script to class up the game, while WotL just hammed it up to the moon and back.

The load times? I have no idea. It's not exactly a taxing game visually, and it doesn't just occur when the VAing is employed. Overall, one of TOSE's lazier efforts of an upscaled port.

No. Some general impressions, but all real discussion of the game is in another FFXIII-specific topic.
