Probably. It should be in C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\Borderlands

Thanks, but do you known what there is in steam that makes it jam up and damage my config file?

I was going to play the games in order for the sake of it, but after that...

A lot of shooters lack autosaves and checkpoints, especially the old ones. Don't blame the game for your lack of saving...

A lot of shooters also lack the ability to jump, or aim up or down. Especially the old ones.

It's a design flaw from the stupid ages.

Hah so was "mechanic" of the old two screen type adventure games.

Developer: "This first screen is for moving around.......<presses spacebar>....While this other screen here lets you search the room using your mouse. Pretty cool, huh?"
Me: "Why can't you just have 1 screen do both?"
Developer: "Why can't your mom just not be a whore?"

The funniest thing is getting old rusted fucked up RPGs. Anything can happen with those.

I recall using one, the rocket pretty much fell out and hit the ground in front of me with a thud, then a few seconds later shot up into the sky, spiralling around then flew into the ground right in a bunch of barrels and maybe an explosives crate.

    Hilarious.

It's shit like this that makes Far Cry 2 special

Stuff happens in that game that is totally dynamic and different than any other game and I love it so

Is 2001 really old enough for the game not to have autosave/checkpoints, or at least not mention that in the tutorial? As far as consoles are concerned, the game came out last generation.

Why would a tutorial mention something that the game doesn't do? Just hit the quicksave button. Or save normally. It's not that hard.

I gave Farcry 2 a shot, but after the 10th time having to jump out of my car to fix it after mowing down a truck full of enemies from a checkpoint I cleared 5 minutes earlier, I decided it just wasn't worth playing through the rest of the game. Trying to get from point A to point B became a 20-minute ordeal instead of a two-minute drive. It's like the enemy checkpoints were put in the game to actively discourage people from playing the game at all.

And for some reason, all the mods for the game are just maps so there's no fix to get rid of checkpoints being infinitely refilled with enemies after only a couple of minutes. Cripes, I managed to tolerate most of the issues of STALKER without mods for almost the entire game, but Farcry 2 sapped all the enjoyment out of the game within in an hour of starting.

Also, Red Faction. I remember playing that back on the PS2 and devoting entire multiplayer matches to seeing how much of the level you could take apart with explosives. More games really do need the ability to blow the hell out of the wall beside a locked door instead of finding a stupid key.

In Far Cry 2 the journey is the reward not the destination. Figuring out how to get from one place to another without too much hassle is part of the fun. At least it was for me.

Yeah smart use of the bus system can avoid like 80% of the checkpoints, and only a few can't be bypassed by going around, and in the second chapter you can get anywhere by water and only have to stop to blow up the occasional patrol boat. Carrying any kind of grenade launcher makes that a non issue.

You say that. But there comes a time when the game asks you to hit F and V at the same time for a quicktime event.

If it uses standard WASD controls, then the index finger hits the F and the thumb his the V. What's the problem?

I don't know what kind of freak hands or keyboard you have but it is basically impossible for me to hit the V key with my thumb on short notice without also hitting spacebar, which as far as I can tell makes you fail the quicktime event. And as far as I can tell the timing is still based on the assumption that your fingers are already hovering over the quicktime buttons.
That's a pretty dumb complaint. Bad ports are things like RE4 (bad controls), Saint's Row 2 (bad performance and stupid menu controls), Force Unleashed (mostly everything)...

RE5 runs faster and prettier on PC, with great controls that take advantage of the mouse precision without making it too easy. the f+v thing is at worst a minor nitpick.

A dumb complaint? Me and my friend played for a while and not once were either of us able to successfully complete it. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to come up with a control scheme that's better. Even if you're forced for porting reasons to keep quicktime input matched up with input keys:

    E: Contextual action
    Q: Assist partner
    F: Locate partner
    V: Inventory

That way the quicktime keys are A+D and Q+E (about 8 times better). Or if you wanted to go crazy you could make the other quicktime input Mouse1 + Mouse2. That way the indicators look substantially different and you know what you need to do without reading letters on the keys. Plus you're hovering your hand over them anyway. And while you're at it, have the mashing events be mouse buttons rather than keys.

When I played RE4 on the GC, I found quicktime events to suit the controls well. A+B your thumb is over, L+R your right and left index fingers are over and A is the biggest, easiest mashable button. When I look at the quicktime event setup on the PC, I feel like no thought and no work went into it. Like they just mapped keys based on normal actions and the quicktime system got dragged along with it.

Is it the worst PC port of all time? No. But it's a legitimate complaint.

When playing Far Cry 2 it felt like 50% of my time was spent starting at a map trying to optimize travel routes. Alright I can take the road down to the dock, grab a boat, then speed over to the checkpoint, grab another car and get to the bus stop, where I only need to go through 2 checkpoints to get to my objective.

I still wish there was Co-op for Crysis. Man that game would have been so awesome with co-op. The huge sprawling levels and ability to mess with AI's from different angles could practically support the concept on its own without any real tweaking needed for the levels.

Instead they tried to develop a battlefield / Enemy Territory mashup that never really took off. I'm certain coop mode would've done them a lot more good.

    So some general Valve news.

Firstly, Kim Swift (one of the creators of Portal) has left Valve for Airtight Stuidos (The guys making Dark Void).
Kim Swift, best known for being one of the students-turned-Valve-developers behind Narbacular Drop and team leader for its better-known successor Portal has left the house of Half-Life for the den of Dark Void.

Swift is joining Airtight Games, the studio behind Capcom's almost-finished jet-pack action game Dark Void. She will be a project lead.

"I've learned so much and had some amazing experiences at Valve," Swift said in a press release announcing the move. "But when I heard I had the opportunity to work on innovative titles with my friends over at Airtight, I couldn't pass it up."

Secondly the black mesa mod gave a yearly update: Surprise, it won't be out this year.
    Hello Black Mesa fans!

We come to you once again with an update. It's now the end of 2009, and we know many of you have literally counted the days down until this fateful month. We are floored by the level of support you have given us and are very excited we're so close to reaching our goal.

Unfortunately, to our great disappointment, Black Mesa will not make a 2009 release.

Cynics may now rejoice, bets may be collected, and I think a mod team member has to eat his shoe, but we hope our loyal fans will forgive us and realize that the delay will translate into a better final product that's (hopefully) more easily available to everyone.

Once again we apologize for what has to be very disappointing news. We placed a 2009 deadline on ourselves to motivate us and bring this 6 year project to a close. And while we didn't quite make it, we have come very close, and you can expect a complete, polished game to hit your hard drives in the near future. We'll be sure and update if anything changes. Until then, hang tight, it's coming!

Sigh, I didn't think they would make 2009. Here's hoping for a 2010 release date.

    I know it's a monster of a project, but.... :?

Well I guess I can quit checking the site very coupla days. My hope is that it comes out just a little bit ahead of Episode 3 so I can do an epic run through the whole saga and hit ep 3 just as it comes out.

This is the exact same reason I quit Far Cry 2. I wanted to like it so bad, but the open world just wasn't any fun at all. It was annoying and tedious simply going from place to place. It was my biggest disappointment of a game from last year.

I'm with you on that, and the way I understand the whole mod thing is that Ubisoft never released anything to help the mod community, which makes it really difficult to change anything.

I also don't understand why there was no Coop in this game. Most of the vehicles have a driver and gunner seat! Seems like something they may have stripped out for time constraints?

This all sounds so familiar. I've started the game twice on 360, and bought it again on Steam during the sale. Maybe I'll actually play more than 5 hours this time?
+1 for the "This is why I didn't finish or even enjoy Farcry 2"

The fire in that game still amazes me though.

Hm. Prior to today, Jedi Knight worked mostly fine with a few minor artifacts and such - and the occasional CTD. I stopped playing it for a couple of weeks due to life intervening, and decided that I needed to play some more this evening. With this goal, I told steam to launch it, and then attempted to load my save; I was greeted with a black screen, followed by a crash.

I attempted, then, to load a different save; the same thing happened. I verified, defrag'd, and finally (after backing up my saves) removed all the local content, followed by downloading it again. My saves were already in place, so I attempted to load my game - and it crashed. I created a new character - and it crashed.

I also tried compatibility mode, but steam wouldn't let the game launch like that.

Machine: Windows XP x64 Professional; AMD 64-bit Dual Core 3800+; 3 Gigabytes of RAM; Nvidia 8800GTS.

No major changes to the hardware since I played it last; software changes would probably be limited to installing new games. I take that back, I also recall going through the process of updating the nvidia drivers.

Did a quick google-search, but my google-fu is weak and the only instructions I found were to alt-tab out and back in. This fails; the crash is being caught by the Visual Studio Just in Time Debugger. Which I'm also trying to remove, but that's an unrelated problem.

I've been waiting for Black Mesa to come out before I upgrade.

I am starting to reconsider this course of action.

Why would you do that anyway? It's a Source mod. It's either going to run well on anything or (if they fucked up with their optimisation) run terribly on everything.

Some people think Black Mesa might be getting picked up by Valve in some capacity, based on some things the developers said and something by Gabe Newell. Probably people looking too much into it, but it could be neat.

Orange Box 2 (Purple Box)? Portal 2, Black Mesa, Episode 3, new Counter-Strike

    That would be sweet.

Is that even necessary? Some graphical enhancements and new maps for CS Source would do just as well.

Now they just need to announce Team Fortress 3, so I won't have to make room in my budget for the Burnt Sienna Box until next decade or so. :P

Because my rig took a dive and as a result I am currently rocking a Celeron 2.6GHz with 256MB of RAM and integrated video.
