All this hype for STALKER: Shadow Of Acronyms makes me want to re-install my disc copy to see if, like Fallout 3, I might actually enjoy it more the second time around.
I'm also tempted to re-install Medieval II: Total War and/or Civ 4 to avoid buying some other history-themed strategy game that I can't afford and, since all of them are RTS or RTS-related these days, won't actually enjoy playing.
Edit: And none of you on the fence types have any excuse to not buy Beyond Good & Evil. Unless you already own it, in which case it becomes a maybe.

I wholeheartedly prefer LURK at the moment, but that's a discussion for another thread.
I also recommend neither unless you're pretty familiar with a vanillaish version of the game.
... and if you did, were you as shocked as I was that the game had an unexpectedly heart-wrenching plotline? I don't think I've seen (up to now) a tower defense style game that even tried to add a sentimental aspect to its plot... at first it felt forced, but as it went on I began to find myself sympathizing with the character in question. I finished up the last level, and now I feel a little bummed. lol

Raspberries being among my favorite foods, it wrenched that much harder :P
edit: But yes, that it had an interesting storyline is definitely part of what makes it my favorite tower defense game. Having any storyline at all probably would have put it above most, but one that actually maintained my interest solely through narration was a nice touch.

The paradox history games are fantastic. Europa Universalis 3 is one of my favorite history games ever. And look, it also happens to be crazy cheap this week.
So far my cart has STALKER: Clear Sky, Zeno Clash, and undecided between Lucas Arts Adventure Pack (which I haven't played) and Rome: Total War Gold (which I have played and loved). I'm trying to round it up nicely to $15; don't want to spend that much to increase my backlog anymore.
Unless any of the daily offers temps me (Come on, Mass Effect!), it seems this'll be what I'll get.
Oops, this is embarrassing. Due to high demand we have temporarily run out of unique keys for this title. You may, by all means, purchase at the awesome sale price but may not be able to play until we receive more unique product keys. It shouldn't take too long, we have sent armed guards to the publisher's house to get them out of bed, drive them to their secret lair and produce more keys.

I didn't really pay all that much attention to the plot, I was having too much fun blowing shit up with my level 3 cannons. It's surprising how many problems can be solved with a cannon shell.
But it was nice that it was there, added a little something to the game. Though I still need to finish that last mission, but that's for later today.
Great game, would recommend for anyone who didn't buy it yet and likes tower defense.
Clear Sky runs like shit on my PC. At least it only cost $5. I can run Crysis, Dow II, Far Cry 2, Mirrors Edge (with PHyx on.) on maximum, with AA enabled, but Clear Sky? Fuck that, it goes fast and slow at the same time, depending on what way my character is facing. Wtf is with this game.

Oh and now it crashed.
Hah, that blows.
I can run Crysis at max settings, but turning on PhysX in Mirror's Edge drops the framerate to single-digits as soon as glass shatters.

Actually that's a huge improvement. When they ran out of keys for Company of Heroes and Unreal Tournament 3, they pulled them off the store page completely until they could get a new batch generated.

Then you probably have an ATI card. PhysX only runs on Nvidia cards. It's a shame that you can't have all the other PhysX stuff, but the regular glass, because the cloth looked kinda nice and didn't appear to affect performance.
Got World in Conflict Complete and Fallout 3: GOTY. Already owned World in Conflict on disk, but wanted the expansion (and to be honest, having it through Steam is awesome.)
Love how the expansion campaigns get integrated with the original. Very nicely done.

Clear Sky is a beast. Sun rays will cripple your performance 99% of the time (worst around dawn and dusk), so turn those down to minimum or off. If that doesn't help, try switching over to DX9 mode, which should run pretty well.
If you've got crashing issues, ask about it in the STALKER thread. Chances are, someone can point you in the right direction.

A beast? It's not even close to as pretty as Mirrors Edge. It just seems poorly optimized to me. Also i could run Crysis in DX10 just fine, sun rays and all. Clear Sky nope. I will play with the settings a bit, but my patience for the game is low as i have other games in my back log that actually work properly.
Have we been talking about Altitude on here? You can play pretty much the whole thing for free, dropping the $10 to pick it up let's you use the rewards you get past level 10. (Which are just alternate versions of the things you have, basically. It's not even necessarily an advantage, just something fresh.)
Obviously I'm linking to a personal thing, because they're doing a promotional thing for spreading it around right now. If you haven't tried it, please do so through my link cause I get points. And god, POINTS! As far as I can tell the points are just for skins, though. I do love this game and want more folks to play it. Are there PA folks flying around?
Yesh, quite fun stuff. I play with some friends from time to time, sometimes firing up our own server for a secret private session.

This isn't one of your schmaltzy console games, son. With your ooohs and your aaaahs and your this just works. You aren't playing it on a Mac, okay? This is the real shit here. We do work. I'm talking loading from tape drives and booting from DOS, because that's how you survive in the Zone. Stragglers are a snork's lunch.
STALKER games are finicky, kind of buggy, and yes, poorly optimized in a lot of areas (particularly the DX10 effects). You have to play with them a bit to get them running well. They're not Crysis. There's not much point in complaining about it, as it's pretty well known. Take a few minutes to experiment, and ask around in the STALKER thread. The stuff I mentioned is the generally stuff that will drain your performance the most.
Cause I know that really helped FPS issues in Shadow of Chernobyl
It seems to have. It's linked on the tweakguides page, with a disclaimer that the original site went down and the mirrored one might not work with the most recent patch.
Clear Sky never really caught on with modders, so support for it is pretty hit or miss. I'm not turning up much that's useful through google, but there's probably plenty of info on the subject for people that speak Russian.
Welp, my first day of knowing about this sale, and I've already given Steam $100. I have no regrets.
What I got:
Audiosurf
Beyond Good and Evil
Braid
GTA IV
Mirror's Edge
Prince of Persia Pack (Sands of Time, Two Thrones, Warrior Within, new PoP)
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
Star Wars: Jedi Knight pack (Dark Forces, DF II: Jedi Knight + expansion, Jedi Knight II, and Jedi Academy)
Unreal Pack (Unreal, Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament, UT 2004, UT 3 black)
The Witcher
aaand the borderlands Dr. Ned DLC to boot. As I said before, best christmas ever.

Aw man...
Oh well, I'm half expecting Clear Sky to not even run on my computer anyways, since the original Stalker decided it doesn't like my computer anymore after I tried reinstalling it the other day.
You know what the worst thing about this sale is? Not kowing if they're going to further heavily discount the stuff you just bought on sale or not. I'm holding out on the Jedi Knight pack and Republic commando on the basis that they might do a 'Star Wars pack' like they did on other DD sales, but part of me just knows I'll forget to pick it up before the sale ends.
The other aspect is having good deals, but gettin screwed in the exchange rate. Yes, £7 for Trine is probably a good deal, but an even better deal for $8. Stalker clear sky is £4 and $5. The Void (a European game) is £10 and $10. Gah - it's the priciple of the thing.

IIRC, Sands of Time doesn't have joystick support making it a pain to play so I'd avoid the PC version for that reason alone. Also Zeno Clash has an enhanced version coming to XBLA next year so you might just want to wait for that if you have a 360.
SoT does have joystick support. I even played it with a 360 controller recently (although, granted, it's a less-than-optimal DirectInput controller due to the unadjustable deadzone and because the triggers are mapped to the same axis).
I played with mouse and keyboard. The controls work just fine.
As someone who's never played Kotor, can someone pleae explain how the combat in the game works? I'll probably end up buying it anyway..
It's actually kind of like an mmo. You click on something to start auto attacking, and you'll have several powers you can queue up. It's a behinds the scene turn based combat though. So think Neverwinter nights, as well. Also, you can pause, and queue up attacks and orders for your team mates.
