look man war machine is more about brute force, it's kind of the last resort "time to kick serious ass" option for tony stark

I dunno James Rhodes was around a fair bit of time before he became war machine, or did a stint as iron man for that matter

maybe they introduced him as just a way to diversify the cast but the decision to make him war machine came a lot later

I think you have to admit that you don't actually know very much about James Rhodes.

Because he was "Iron Man" long before he was ever War Machine.

James Rhodes' first appearance was in Iron Man #118 (1979)

He took over the Iron Man suit for Tony in issue #170 (1983)

He became War Machine in Iron Man #284 (1992)

Actually, his Spider-Man work is pretty decent. Not saying he hasn't done some absolutely horrible shit but he suffers a lot from Jim Lee syndrome in the sense that his work is actually good a lot of the time it's just his style was aped so much and is associated with so much awful 90s crap that it gets lost in the noise.
