[D&D 4E - recruit] GIANT ANTS : looking for defender or controller

G I A N T ¤ A N T S
ITS FRAKKING ANTS, MAN.

This is a short adventure featuring giant ants, and of course other monsters, attacking a town. This thread is a recruitment thread for a replacement player. The spot is open for a defender or controller only. If you are interested in playing a defender or controller in this game, please see below.

A. A bunch of sentences that describe how the game is run.
Table:
Current title: GIANT ANTS COLON ITS FUCKING ANTS, MAN.
Time Zone: I live in the Eastern Standard Time Zone, so the play time will kind of be more favorable to that zone. (8am-12am) or something similar to that, assuming RL doesn't kick my ass.
Starting Level: 2 - See DMG for information on starting a second level character.
Creation rules: 22 Points Flat (And a 3d3-5 Roll). The roll is of mechanical importance. Do not roll it yet.
Target start: Already active.
Medium: PBP only
Maptool version: N/A
Maptools Session Length: N/A
The Table - Rules: Not too serious/rigid interpretation of the ruleset.
The Table - Content: Look at the title. Think.
Difficulty: Challenging would be the word for this.
Experience Required: A basic understanding of how to play would be great?
Books Required: Any 4E content is allowed, at my discretion. Don't be a dick?

List of acceptable races:
  • All PHB Races.
  • All PHB2 Races, yes. even Deva.
  • Robats are allowed too (Warforged)

Be it because their flavour doesn't fit the game or because I just don't like em as player characters, the others aren't acceptable at all. I'm sorry for the inconvenience that may cause.

List of acceptable classes:
  • I am specifically looking for a defender or controller.
  • I'm going to have to pass on seekers and psions. Sorry.
  • This game has the amenities and tech level of an late 1800s era civilization, including indoor plumbing.

B. What am I looking for?
To the extent that is reasonably possible, I would say being able to post at least once a day is a must. Being able to post more would be nice. The base requirements for playing would be that you participate in the IC thread - post a day, at least... hopefully more? I'm fairly active during the weekdays with posting, barring any unusual RL circumstances or being busy. I don't expect you to live and breathe this, it's just a game ffs, but yea... it is just a game, meaning if you don't post you shouldn't feel slighted if you're replaced or whatever.

Really important note: activity includes non-combat. Despite its brevity and absurdity, it's still a roleplaying game. A party full of strong, silent types is not what I'm looking for, even with this game. All characters should be made with the baseline assumption that they will join a group for this adventure. Also, no evil characters. So, what am I looking for at this point?

A post, with the following responses:
1) Current pbp games you are in or run. If you feel you were awesome in some game or whatever you can mention past ones too?
2) Availability M-F for maek post, and time zone you are in.
3) A brief description of your Non-seeker, non-psion defender or controller character's appearance and personality.
4) You're walking around in a desert and find a tortoise laying on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't. Not without your help. Suddenly several GIANT SAND ANTS just burst from the sand… (Behind a spoiler, reply in character to that).

You don't need to fully generate a character, I don't expect one here. Just what I asked for in this post is fine.

[strike]At this point since I'm not sure of the situation, I'm only looking for a player candidate in the event that one of my dudes isn't able to continue playing and such.[/strike] I'm reasonably certain teh dude isn't going to be coming back and as such I gotta open the spot for someone else. That dude was a defender. You don't need to reserve a post, not like there's a massive line or whatever. It's highly likely that my recruiting pattern for this will continue to skew towards people who haven't had a chance to be in any games though (just in general). I would prefer that you only put in one submission here per person.

So in summary: I'm looking for a defender/controller character. A brief post with what I asked for in part B is sufficient. Please do not PM me with your concept and if you have any other questions about this just post them here, thanks.

PS: No Shaman.

    1) Current Gaemes
GM'ing: Clone Wars PbP (Star Wars SE), Stick In The Mud PbP (D&D 4E)
Playing: 100 Kingdoms PbP - Spear God Li (Exalted/Wushu), Dark Clouds PbP - Hugh de Lacy (Iron Heroes), Castlevania PbP - Von Hexing (D&D 4E)
    2) Availability
    Time Zone: California
Days Available: Usually every day of the week, occasionally difficult due to travel. Can post at least once per day under normal circumstances.
    3) A brief description.
Inutchuk, Goliath Fighter (2 Weapon Talent, probably). Inutchuk is large even for a Goliath, and took the news pretty hard when the Dwarves who raised him broke it to him that he was not actually a dwarf. They suggested that he leave the mines and stop bumping his head on the ceiling and learn about his people, the Giantkin. Inutchuk has kept a personality consistent with the Dwarfish way of living, and seeks to exalt himself in the eyes of his "new" people through bold action. Like Dwarfs, his solemn grudgebearing nature is prone to conversion to wild frenzy by way of alcohol... and he loves hammers. He is developing some very Giantish traits, like basing one's position in life on height and seeing how far he can throw large boulders... the larger, the better.
    4) You're walking around in a desert and find a tortoise laying on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't. Not without your help.
Do you make up these questions, Mr. Holden? Or do they write 'em down for you?
Suddenly several GIANT SAND ANTS just burst from the sand…
I bash them with my hammer. Probably many times. Like the great Kavaki, Lord of Rams, I shall punish my enemies and ram their shattered backsides even as they flee!

hey there, thanks for your interest!

it'd help me out a lot if I got an idea of what kind of paladin defender you'd like to play... the latter portion of the OP lets you know what I'm trying to feel out, as far as what to add to the gang in the unfortunate but likely event that this "reserve" turns calls into a "replacement" one.

if you'd need an example, horseshoe post shows what I'm seeking at this point.

A little update. As it is, if I don't get in touch with the missing fellow by I'm thinking Wednesday (12/09/2009), this will be an "official" replacement instead of a "just in case."

That said I'll be making a "choice" regardless on Friday (12/11/2009). So, if you're interested in playing just post up as per the directions of the first post.

edit: "giant ant iso 1pc def/con rsvp tyvm nsham" = giant ants is in search of 1 player character defender/controller reserve via post thank you very much no shamans.

btw. I took it out of the subject for clarity.

okay, tried to reach him and I haven't been able to get to him. given the circumstances I think I've more than reasonably did my part so it's a replacement, not a reserve. the op has been edited accordingly.

That said, Friday if nobody else posts up Horseshoe, you're in. I'll look over the contents of the post and work out how you'd enter accordingly later (friday).

you can always just do it like on television or comics

where suddenly there's another character in place of a previous character

and you just keep going as though he was always there and the previous character never was

I'd recommend against this. Tasty's settings are very rich and it took my character in his other game (which we did this method with) some time to actually start meshing into the game. Still not sure if he feels in place now :(

EDIT: I would apply to be in this game too, but since I am the defender in the other Tasty game I have refrained.

yea, that was a rough choice. definitely would have done it differently if one could do it over. but you've been traveling with those quirky folks long enough that you should feel in place already! it's been almost a year of real time! and depending on the choices the party makes in the future, it may get addressed in its own way. ;p

there's a number of ways any character can be incorporated into this group to a lot smoother than a hot swap. which is really a worst-WORST-case scenario decision.

edit: it would be fair to state that the ease and smoothness by which such an insertion can be made is a factor in choosing folks for my games, btw. but since you're the only person with a valid app up at this point horseshoe, that's largely academic. ;p

Debating throwing in an 11th hour char submission here, but a)I'm in two games already, b)I've twice failed to get into a tastydounts-run game before, and c)I really liked how Horseshoe played Indra in (the now apparently defunct) Dragons in Space campaign, and I want to see how he might do with this character.

lol, well more submissions would complicate things for me!

but eh, up until tomorrow it's pretty much up for grabs... I would say though that if anyone does plan to throw something out sooner would be far better than later. I have no reason to wait until 11:59 PM Friday to close this out as this is an active game. ;P

Would a fey pact warlock be controller-y enough? My drow warlock saved a deep gnome from being sacrificed to Lolth in return for the promise of power; subsequently making a deal with fey spirits. Now, she seeks to test the limits of her new abilities while one day hoping to bring down her elder sisters and house. Of course, Lolth and her family have no doubt sent something after her - what that might be, she has no idea. Fleeing to the surface/getting out of the Underdark thus seems like a prudent first step, to gather allies in her quest.

My second attempt to get this character into a game...

    1) Current pbp games you are in or run. If you feel you were awesome in some game or whatever you can mention past ones too?
None, just playing in Aegeri's Maptools on Saturdays

    2) Availability M-F for maek post, and time zone you are in.
M-F most of the day, most days. I post semi-regularly in the main thread when interest strikes, but can post frequently. Also Sat mornings, between my turns etc. I can probably manage a post or two in the morning. Sundays is a toss up.

    3) A brief description of your Non-seeker, non-psion defender or controller character's appearance and personality.

Selena 'Canary' Mediore: A Changeling Wizard impersonating a rich human woman she killed at one point. Now on a path of redemption, she uses the persona of her old mentor to try and live her life of adventure. She uses illusion/psychic magic exclusively and is a 'charmer'. She much prefers nobody to know that she is not really human. She is very young, extremely arrogant and vain, and an accomplished con artist who despises doing much herself and relishes attention.

As the ants burst through the sand she emits a horrified girlish panicked cry for help. Glancing about nervously and realizing she is all alone and nobody is here to help her she grudgingly grabs her orb to defend herself, her expression turning to something a bit more akin to a bloodthirsty warrior. Hopefully she can trick one of the ants into flipping the turtle back over, otherwise she'll have to touch the slimy thing herself...parish the thought.

So after actually READING your spoilers a bit better, it seems Changelings are off limits. I've made another submission if the previous one is not up to snuff.

    1) Current pbp games you are in or run. If you feel you were awesome in some game or whatever you can mention past ones too?
None, just playing in Aegeri's Maptools on Saturdays

    3) A brief description of your Non-seeker, non-psion defender or controller character's appearance and personality.

Jereziah (Jerry to some): Paladin of Pelor, he wades fearlessly into combat but is always mindful of his friends. He is compassionate, but strong; sensitive, but protective. He talks fondly of his days in his church, but more so of the training he received with his blade.

Immediately drawing his sword, Jerry would vehemently defend the tortoise. When the battle is done, he would help turn the creature back over and pray to Pelor to ease the heat of the sun so that he may travel safely.

@tzeen: I'd have to say no. once it gets down to the meat of it all, a striker won't fit the bill. The player's character needs to be able to A) outright kill or hinder multiple hostiles, or B) contain/distract mobs such that the other members of the team can do so.

edit: I'll prolly be wrapping this up by 4:00 PM EST, too. so if you do want to give it a run, go for it before then I guess. D:

In case you have not picked, I have a human fighter for submission, Alain Delmain. His father was a master polearm fighter, who had begun to teach his son his master techniques. Part way through, the father took off without leaving a note or explanation, save a single black feather Alain found at the hearth. After a year with no word, Alain took his father's second-best glaive (the first best having gone with his father) and set off to find him. Alain has enough skill to know what the correct moves would be/should look like, but lacks the skills to execute them fully - hopefully practice on the road to finding his father will help.

Currently playing in Figgy's KotS campaign and Arivia's Scions of Forgotten Splendor campaign (assuming she returns to the game, ever).
In Mountain time/pacific time for the next month, mostly free to post.
    Action sequence!
In his head, Alain could see exactly how to proceed. A quick thrust and flick of the butt of his polearm sent the turtle into the air, bouncing off one of the eyes of the intruding ants. In the meantime, a reverse thrust and sweep of his glaive left a grievous wound in one ant's forehead and the antennae sheered off of another. To cap it all off, he caught the turtle in one hand while pole-vaulting over the outstretched mandibles of a last ant, striding off victorious.

That was in his head. While Alain was able to flick the turtle up at the ants, he had apparently put too much force in the flick as the turtle went flying over the whole group. Alain could only hope that it landed safely. Meanwhile, his frantic thrust and sweep of his blade failed to even connect with an ant, who merely looked at him in what he assumed was a quizzical manner. Lastly, his pole vault fell far short, and only a frantic ducking saved him from having his neck pincered in two. Deciding discretion was by far the better part of valor, Alain turned and fled.

I'm in three other games (see footer), so wont be too disappointed if I miss out, but I can't get enough D&D going. I keep track of CF pretty constantly unless I'm asleep (I'm at +10GMT, so that may overlap with some people's regular play time, but I'm right on the ball the rest of the time).

    Toren Etrak - Halfling Fighter:

Toren was raised amongst a small group of Goliaths. Found as a baby by a Goliath mother that had recently lost her own child. While never being as strong or as hearty as the rest of his tribe, Toren adopted the aggressiveness of his peers. After realising that he was seen more as a mascot than a serious fighter, Toren set out to prove his strength. He's short, but fairly muscle-bound and covered in tattoos. He keeps his head shaved, and basically tries to make himself look as tough as he can despite his stature.

    Toren in action:
Toren wandered through the sands, sweat beading on his sunburnt scalp. Climbing the dune and spotting the turtle, he pauses for a moment before approaching and lifting the turtle in his hands. Suddenly the ground burst open around him, spilling out giant ants. He glares disappointingly at the turtle in his hands. "You little bastard! Set a trap for me?" he screams, before hurling the the turtle at the closest ant. Drawing his sword, Toren charges recklessly at an ant to his right, slitting open its skull before turning to face the others."Well, bring it on then!"

    K. Sorry for the delay, had to mull it over some. Gonna run with Inutchuk the Goliath Fighter (Horseshoe). Of the concepts presented it most hits into the overall campy b-movie flavour that I'm going with for the game.

that said, if you don't have the char ready, it'd be level 2. you can post it on orokos or mythweavers. my preference is mw because you can just type in the power descriptions and I don't have to log in to view them if I need to, and it doesn't preclude other players without DDI from being able to see what you can do and such...

I can't think of anything else atm. The general insertion bit to get you into the game needs to be tailored to fit your character, and I'll give you more information on it too, but that will probably happen on Monday - Tuesday, I'm thinking.

Congrats, and thanks to everyone else for your interest.
