Wii VC/WW Secret Santa 2009: All gifts accounted for! Who wants egg nog?

Welcome to the Virtual Console / WiiWare Secret Santa 2009 thread!

215555703_5rhju-L-2.jpg

(Fortunately for you, I am not Div.)

**********

Soon the Great Assigning will begin. Keep an eye on your PM boxes as your Santa/Santee info will be sent sometime in the near future.

***********

Welcome to the THIRD annual Virtual Console Secret Santa Thread. Thanks to the "Gift" function on the Nintendo Wii's Shop Channel, it is possible to send other Wii owners classic games from consoles of yore, as well as new games created specifically for Wii Ware. Best of all, it means we can get our Secret Santa on!

The process is easy. In a nutshell... first, everyone who is interested in participating joins up and throws their name into the virtual christmas hat. I then will draw names at random for all participants, matching up Santas with Santees. Gifting ensues.

OFFICIAL RULES OF ENTRY AND PARTICIPATION (MUST READ):

Important stuff!

Two rules which must be obeyed at all times: Wheaton's Law, and Gabe's PA Ping Pong Rule #6

If you can't check the links, these two rules are summarized here:
- "Don't be a dick".
- "Players must bring their A game. We will not allow any weak shit in our house. If someone is caught bringing weak shit we will exclaim in a very loud voice “Yo, why you bring that weak shit up in my house!”"

This is how you bring your "A" game.

GROUND RULES:

I am not going to accept anyone with a forum join date later than November 1st 2009. This is to prevent abuse of the Virtual Console Secret Santa program. Sorry, but there is always the risk that someone will join up only to receive a gift without any intention of ever giving one.

SUGGESTED Gift Value: 1000 Wii Points. No one is going to hunt you down if you decide to give MORE than 1000 Wii Points worth of Virtual Console games, but there is NO requirement of ANYONE to spend more than 1000 Wii Points. This is to ensure EVERYONE has the budget to participate. If you go nuts and buy your Santee every N64 game on the service, and you only get an NES game from your Santa, tough cookies!

Gifts are Country Locked. For whatever reason, Nintendo has restricted the Gift feature to people who live within the same country. This means your Santa and Santee will be forumers who live in the same country as you. This is why you must post what country you live in (More on that in a moment). Don't sweat it, I will match people up based on country so there are no problems. Unfortunately, if only 1 person from a particular country participates, that person will not be able to participate. Sorry, but there isn't much I can do about that.

This thread IS mod approved. HOWEVER, it is not their problem if you get ripped off by some turd burglar who doesn't send out a gift. Sorry, but thems the terms. This is just one more reason I'm encouraging a spending cap of 1000 Wii Points. LET IT BE KNOWN that if you gift something that costs 0 points such as the news or weather channel or the WiiWare demos, you will be considered a deadbeat santa and beatings will ensue. (Please note that if you wish to send these 0 Points items in addition to your gift to your Santee, you are more than welcome to do so.)
If you are okay with all of the above, then here is.....

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

Step 1: Ensure your Wii is capable of accessing the Wii Shop Channel

This is one of those no-brainer rules. If you can't handle this, don't bother signing up. The last thing we need is someone going "Um, I can't connect to the Wii Shop Channel, and I don't know why." at the last minute because that would suck. It would also break the first two rules that must be obeyed at all times.

Step 2: Sign-up

Everyone that wishes to participate MUST post the following information AS SHOWN IN THE QUOTE BELOW:
ADD ME!
Username / Wii Message Board Code / Country
(Just copy the quote code if you have to!)

These things are very important, and if you do not post all of the required information then you are not participating.

Any additional information you wish to post, put it in a spoiler. Other helpful information includes what games you already have, what games you would like to have, what games you don't want, and how many points you're willing to spend. It will also serve as a nice guide to your Secret Santa as to what kinds of games you like!

Step 3: Fill up your Wii Address Book

This is where I'm going to have to ask for a little bit of extra work from the Santas, but nothing you can't handle. You will notice at the bottom of this OP is the "Grand List of Secret Santas". It is here where I will collect all the information of those who wish to participate. What ALL SANTAS MUST DO at the end of registration is to ADD YOUR FELLOW SANTAS IN YOUR COUNTRY BY THE DEADLINE STATED BELOW. I will be giving you only the Wii number to whom you send a gift by PM. This way you will not know who your Santa is (at least not easily) until you receive your gift, and if there is a problem, it can be worked out discreetly. By having everyone fill in all Santas Wii Message Board Codes, if a Santa were to post that they can't participate after the deadline has passed, it will take minimal effort to fix the problem.

If you're not sure how to use the Wii Address Book or even find your Wii Message Board Code, here's two sets of instructions to help educate you.

Quick set of instructions: Watch this video, starting at the Wii Main Menu. (I'm not sure why there is something involving the Mii Channel at the beginning, because that doesn't matter.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WIUVhlcZSM

Long and detailed set of instructions: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/messageBoard.jsp#accessAddressBook

Step 4: Fill up your Wii Shop Account with Nintendo Points

Because you can't send gifts without those Nintendo Points!

Step 5: Congratulations!

You are now ready to be one secretly jolly S.O.B.! How does it feel?

DEADLINES

December 11 at 11:59pm Eastern Time: Deadline to Enter. You must post with your correct information BY THIS DATE AND TIME.

December 12-15: Last chance to register all fellow Santas in your country as listed in the Grand List.

December 15*: You will receive the Wii Message Board Code to which you will play Santa and give a gift to that 16 digit number.

January 2: Your Santee must receive his or her gift by this date. I'm extending it to January 2 because if you can't get your gift out by Christmas, I think it would still be cool to send it for New Years. How cool would it be to wake up to a new year to find out your Wii is glowing with a gifted game?

After January 2: I analyze the thread to find out who sent/received their gifts and PM those involved where there are discrepancies. Basically, I find out what's up. (They could have sent/received their gift and just not posted about it, as an example.)

January 10: Deadbeat Santas (if any) are announced.

*December 15 deadline isn't set in stone, but it is what I'm aiming for.

Other Important Stuff

Don't complain about who you got for a Santee! Further, don't complain about what your Santa got for you!

If there are any problems, let me know ASAP! PM'ing me is probably best.

I will be linking this thread to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection thread OP, just like I did last year, just in case something strange happens and no one can find it.

The most important rule: HAVE FUN!
I will be updating the Grand List as often as I can, so hopefully nightly(ish). If you want to be extra sure I get your info, PM me.

This all worked out fantastically last year, with no deadbeat santas* and nothing but happy gamers all around. Lets make it a 3 year perfect streak!
(* I think we can forgive what happened)

The rest of this thread may be used to discuss, post what games you have, etc.
Do know that simply posting "I'm in!" doesn't grant you entry. If you've read this far, you already know how to enter, so there's no excuse.

Now let's get festive!

(Would it be poor form of me to want to also be a Santa this year? I kind of want to join in, but then I'd know who my Santa is. Hmmm.....)

I think full lists of games people own should be posted.

That way we get a good idea of taste and that way we don't gift them what they already have.

Edit: It wouldn't be poor form, you should however have someone pick your SS for you first. That way you still get the surprise but also keep your neutrality. I mean only so many people can want JAEF haha.

PM sent. I'll post my list of VC games once sign-ups end.

For those of us who are bad people and have neglected our Wiis where do we find our message board code and how do we fill our address book? I want to join, but I'd feel like a tard for joining if I can't guarantee that I can do those basic steps.

Full lists of games are of course a good idea, I'm gonna be posting a full list later on. You can't gift stuff they already have though, the Wii doesn't let you do that.

So yeah, I'm excited this year! woo! I hope we get a few more people, the list seemed a bit small last year.

It says to POST your Wii info. Nowhere in there does it say to PM your code to me. If you want to PM your code to me to make sure I don't miss it, that's fine, but please post your info in this thread.

If all you do is PM me, everyone will have to wait until I edit the Grand List to see your info, and I admit I may not always be here every day to update it. If you post your info, anyone can see it at any time (and they need to because of Step 3), whether I've added it to the Grand List or not.

So please, post your info, and use the format I've shown to make your post stand out and be noticed. I'm just trying to keep this as idiot-proof as possible. The last thing I want is to miss someone's code altogether and ruin a part of Christmas for them.

Despite the fact that I have a metric fuckton of VC games, It doesn't mean that I don't want more VC games. I'll be happy with whatever I get! Mostly I prefer action games but I'm also a big RPG fan and classic shooters are awesome too. So are adventure games, and really pretty much every genre minus sports and RTS.

A couple of things I don't want are,
    - Sonic games. Any of the Genesis ones. I've got the whole mega collection on Gamecube, not to mention a billion copies of them through various compilations, so I don't need them, and Sonic 2 is my brother's.
    - The original Metroid. I already have this through GBA as well as Metroid Prime, and it just frustrates me to no end. I've never been able to beat it.
    - Zelda: OOT. I already got this through the Gamecube disc.
    - No Metal Slug either. Already have the Anthology disc with 1-6.
    - No Street Fighter II, I have this game twice on Live Arcade, both Turbo and Super HD versions.

    Other than that, gift away!

I know the fun in this is that you don't know what to expect, but please no Sonic, sports games or N64 games. I would prefer something on the SNES or Turbo Grafx -maybe an obscure favorite of yours- but I'll be happy with whatever I get. I feel bad even giving stipulations, but I must own the Sonic games 30 times over by now.

Okay, I think I have everyone on the list up to now.

Ireland? Wow. gijohn13, could check your Wii settings menu to see what country you've chosen for your Wii upon its initial setup, please? (If you're not sure how to do that, click here.) I could be wrong, but I just have a hunch everyone in Europe can't be THAT restricted in gift-giving. If it's something other than Ireland, please let me know. HOWEVER, DO NOT CHANGE YOUR WII'S COUNTRY!

The deadline to sign up is approaching fast, people! I hope we get more sign-ups! While I'm at it, we need some Canadian representation! I'm joining in!

I will add the rest of the info later tonight.

Edit: THE REST OF THE INFO! (Kinda big)
    What I have:

NES: Blades of Steel, Bubble Bobble, Punch-Out!, Super C.

SNES: Contra III, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, Super R-Type, Super Street Fighter II.

    N64: Sin & Punishment

    Turbo-Grafx 16: Bomberman 93

WiiWare: Bust-a-Move Plus, Defend Your Castle, Tetris Party (and the demos of Bit Trip Beat and World of Goo).

What I think I would want:
    - Anything that would work awesomely with a Hori Fighting Stick

    What I WOULD NOT want:
    - Any more Street Figher (Exceptions: Unless there is Super SFII Turbo on Virtual Console Arcade or a not-so-HD Remix. Street Fighter III: Third Strike is also okay.)
    - World of Goo: I tried half the demo and was pretty meh about it. I guess it's just not for me.
    - Bit Trip Beat: As soon as I get points added on my Wii, I'll be buying this for myself anyways. :P
    - "Namco Museum" games: I've got Namco Museum on Gamecube, so I have no real need for them.
    - N64 games: Of what's available, I already have the carts of what interests me. (Exception: Paper Mario. I have PM:TTYD and SPM in the backlog. If it's really important I play the first Paper Mario, then maybe. Otherwise, I have far too many RPG's in the backlog already to add another one.)
    - RPG's: I just said why. (Exception: Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. I would buy this after I get around to playing FF4DS.)
    - Zombies Ate My Neighbours: Have the cart.
    - NES Zelda games: Just not interested in them.
    - Kirby's Adventure: Have the GBA version.

What I'm not sure to put in either list:
    - Anything from "Super Mario All-Stars + SMW" and Zelda: ALttP. I already have the carts, but I would definitely have these games if weren't for that. I have considered getting them eventually anyways. I just don't see myself needing them right now while I have an SNES still alive and kicking. Heck, I'm even in the middle of replaying SMB 3. :D
    - Anything "Sonic". I've had multiple opportunities to buy the Sonic Mega Collection for Gamecube, but I just haven't. Partly because of my backlog, partly because I've never really played a Sonic game except for a couple of times many years apart. If I get gifted a Sonic game, make in the best one. Like, the only Sonic game I'll ever need.
    - River City Ransom: I think I played this when a friend rented it back in the day and had fun with it. I distinctly remember those character sprites anyway. I'm just not sure if I'd have fun with it now.
    - Super Dodge Ball: See "River City Ransom".

If I think of more, I'll add to and and let you all know.

No, there's no problem. I know the restriction in gifting is that you can only send it to within your own country. I was just wondering if the Wii settings had "Ireland" strictly, or something else that might have given you a little more freedom in gifting. That's all.

Alright. I have some points and I'm ready. This will be my first PA secret santa, so I'm giddy with anticipation. Giddy.

Games I own and stuff to avoid:
Update for my Santa: I forgot to mention, I do own a Classic Controller and a GameCube controller.

    NES:
    Kirby's Adventure
    Punch-Out!!
    StarTropics
    Super Mario Bros.
    Super Mario Bros. 3

    SNES:
    Donkey Kong Country
    Super Castlevania IV
    Super Mario World
    Super Metroid
Zelda: A Link to the Past

    Genesis:
    Sonic The Hedgehog 2
    Comix Zone

    N64:
    Mario Kart 64
    Super Mario 64

    WiiWare:
    Lost Winds
    Mega Man 9

    Things to Avoid:
    -Sports Games
    -Strategy/RTS/Sim/god games
-Any WiiWare game that has a PC version. (World of Goo, Strong Bad, Monkey Island, etc)
-Zelda 1, Zelda 2, OOT, and MM (I have the GameCube Zelda collection).
-As strange as it sounds, any first party Nintendo games on the NES.
-Zombies Ate My Neighbors (I have the cart and play it regularly)
    -Donkey Kong Country 3
    -Tower Defense games
-I already own Earthworm Jim: Special Edition for Sega CD, and Earthworm Jim 2 on the Sega Saturn.

Other than that, I'm up for almost anything. Maybe something you think I would like, something you think I need to play, or a favorite classic of yours.

    Don't do this.

I'm sure you could just change it in the Wii Settings Menu, but there's three problems to this from what I've read in various forums during this gen.

    1) Any points you already have in the Wii Shop Channel become lost.

    2) Any games that you have that are not available in your "new" region will not show up on your menu, and it is entirely possible for your region to be locked into the "new" region (if it already hasn't happened, in which case you can't change your region, making this all moot.)

    3) (And I admittedly say this without much specific knowledge) During the time I was hesitant to upgrade the the Wii Main Menu to 4.2, I read around that changing your Wii's region at this point is "asking to brick your Wii". I'll see if I find what I saw of this to clarify what I mean.

Basically, don't go Nike on your Wii. Just DON'T do it.
