I guess after that monument, when people realized they just couldn't surpass it, society just gives up. Once everyone has a copy the sales dry up and the economy tanks, etc.
Why do you think Carmack is making a rocketship? He's getting the F outta here!
Edit: With his money bags, of course.
God I wish I saved that forum macro I made which was basically 'John Carmack can fly. What the fuck have you done lately?'
I had a voodoo 3 2000 and used that for years. I bought it some time shortly after Quake 2 came out.
I remember "Quake 3 Test"
Remember that guys? The free "test" beta of the game, came with The Longest Yard and the other level, and there was DM and TDM modes?
Man not only running that on my PC - which I didn't expect it to run well given my specs at the time - not only ran surprisingly well on my 16 meg Voodoo 3 2000 PCI card but also the lag was half decent, to my surprise, even on my 24.4 modem!
man, we played every version of that
we had a lan where we pretty much just played q3test 1.08, for three days

I love how his eyes are burning red in that.

I remember playing Microsoft Space Simulator, strangely enough. Not too surprising that never got further. What I mean is that the chance of seeing games like MiG-29 Fulcrum from Novalogic (which was actually pretty arcadey at times) is very, very low. Modern flight simulators have, with a few exceptions (mostly Russian developed games, like DCS or Lock On), died off. It's WWII or nothing.

Sending you the biggest of internet high fives right now Tertiee. You're on my list of awesome people now. Right above Lowly but below Unco.
man i remember playing q3test so fucking much, and buying the stupid metal box fancy edition of q3 and everything. fuck i played so much q3. one of my favorite games of all time, easily. i considered rocket arena q3 the absolute pinnacle of gaming for a pretty long time.
Man that Sarge model in the "gameplay" bit has a legitimate like silhouette style shadow. But the actual game never had any shadows anything like that! < this is wrong, forgot about the console command
Also I was bothered because back when PC Gamer or someone did a preliminary preview of the game, they showed screenshots, and the damn metal surfaces and such were reflective, like reflective of the actual environment. The magazine also showed that same kind of fancy looking shadow too.
But Quake 3 never ended up having those things.
I was only slightly disapointed but ultimately didn't care since the game is a blast.

Quake is awesome. I have team arena installed on this computer. I'd play it tonight, unfortunately I procrastinate a lot and have a huge paper due tomorrow. Which would also explain why I'm here instead of writing it.

I still play quake world and q3 CPMA, Q2, while my favorite, just died off. Plus quake world is so fucking fast it's fun.
You can keep your games with your plot and fancy GFX and realistic guns. I want to bounce about the map at mach 5 and jump o rockets. :P

I had no idea it was 10 years. And I just reinstalled Q3 + TA the other day...
Rocket Arena 3 was such a fail mod. Every other competitive community looked down on them and they'd bitch so much. It was kind of funny, and it would have been sad if RA3 players weren't the scum of the universe. Present company excluded.

I already told you: cg_shadows 2 (or 3)
You're right, I forgot about enabling it through the console commands..
Picmip 9? Godamn. That's really high. Picmip 5 is pretty standard, you go to high and it starts to get pixilated and garbled, making things harder to see. I knew a guy who ran picmip 12 and it was almost painful to watch.
Nope, doesn't look bad at all. Hmm, I wonder why I thought it was different. I know that guy had the ugliest config I'd ever seen. It must have been something else as well.
Threewave's CCTF was fun, but so much work. It crashed and burned outside of Europe, which is a shame. I mean, CTFS was the premiere Threewave gametype, and it was really good, but CCTF was special and fun. And so intense. I remember my clan would always stick me on defence because I refused to learn how to grapple monkey. I'd just roam the middle and shoot the shit out of people, basically playing TDM. Not even a good thing to do, but I had so much fun.

In good games, you don't care that you win. Only that you got to play.

I pretty much hated most mods for Q3.
Quake Live has some funky stuff added to it that just ruins the game for me. That along with remixing some levels. Blech.

Q3F actually was the one that got away from me, it took me years to actually appreciate what was going on with the fast-paced-fps twitchyness. Q1 and Q2 have a really special place in my heart for sure.
Then, I discovered Urban Terror and NS:CO (The two biggest "realism" Q3 mods) and I was hooked.
Hooked on UrT for about a year and a half, and NS:CO for at least three or four straight years.
I hate trying to explain to my peers (college kids 7 yrs younger than me) how Call of Duty MW is a highly re-optimized/modified quake 3 engine, the cross hairs are still the damn same!
Call of Duty MW is a highly re-optimized/modified quake 3 engine
Speculation or is their engine really a shoot off of id Tech?
It may just be borrowed netcode/programming, but the - synchonising settings, waiting for gamestate, and smooth as silk, (nearly) perfect online code seems like the same thing to me. It feels and plays a lot like Quake 3 Arena, people just don't realize it because of the shiny shiny.

Actually, I enjoyed it.

Doom is 16. Starcraft is over 11 and a half. Half-Life just turned 11 last month.

Yes.

i dont remember any reflective metal surfaces though, i dunno
?
I had all kinds of shadows and reflections.
One of the big graphical wow things was the portal reflection in the training room at the very beginning. They took that out of Quake Live.

no other game had such a high concentration of skilled players..
PSN: super_emu
Xbox360 Gamertag: Emuchop
Hi, I'm CPMA and OSP, where the best players in the world competed in. RA was just for casuals.
That's right there is a console command to enable those fancy shadows

God I miss playing CPMA sometimes, best FPS experience outside of CCTF (Classic CTF from the Threewave mod).
I was 8.
And I still played that shit on release day.
I love my dad.
my first PC gaming experience ever was fucking strogg up with the super shotgun when I was 5.

I played 1, and 2. 3 just didn't feel right to me though. Played the demo and then never again
