I remember when I was invited to the closed beta for this game. The site didn't tell anyone what the game was, there were no logos for developer, and it was mostly in French. At first I thought it was some kind of phishing attempt, then I got this game. Didn't hear anything about what it was called until 6 or 7 months later.
I've played loads with germans and US, so here's what i've gathered (i'm level 22 if that helps at all):
US
The bad -
-Very innacurate and generally bad artillery
Did you by chance miss the Calliope rocket artillery tank found within the US protolab? It's one of the best artillery units in the game. It's fast, has good armour (since it's a Sherman tank chassis) and also has the Sherman tank's regular cannon, making it dual purpose in a pinch (though too costly to use as a tank replacement, unless you're loaded).

I don't know, in my play i hardly ever use the prototypes for any nation; seems like every time i use them i always end up thinking i could've gotten the same thing for half price with some teching of the regular units.
That said, i have seen people use the calliope, and i will agree that it can rain some nasty destruction on things with impunity. Again, my gameplay rarely uses prototypes, so my impressions of artillery is pretty much the priest
Jesus Christ this game is good. I just played a 3v3 game that lasted for maybe an hour or so, with the main line of resistance falling dead center on the map. It was just constant trading shots between artillery and probing attacks on each others' flanks by tanks.
One of my allies (incidentally, all of us allies were playing US) had been building up this amazingly huge tank force at the rear of his base. I got a shitload of cash that is not going anywhere, so the three of us decide to conduct our own version of the Normandy paratrooper landings.
Launch fake air offensive on east side of map, drawing his fighters there. Allied fighters intercept, trying to down as many as they can. Allied tanks roll directly towards enemy in two separate pushes, to minimize the killing zone of his AT. And then I summon up maybe 200 C-47s (I'M NOT KIDDING I SERIOUSLY HAD THOUSANDS OF MONEY IN RESERVE) to drop paratroopers all throughout and behind their lines.
Lotta planes got shot down, but it worked, and combined with the tank offensive, we wiped all of them clean. Somewhere in that offensive was another Dick Winters leading his men to eliminate some German 105mm battery or something.

Did you save the replay? Could you upload it? That is awesome.
Love this game so far. Been playing the Russians. I may try the French and Germans later, though.
This game would be so good if it actually let you play it. It's so hard to get a game going between the very few people actually playing and the crappy net code. I can't get my peeps to play this anymore because it lags so often and takes so much time to get a full server, and when I finally get a 1v1 going it's someone who para/bomber/infantry rushes me and he gets crushed by combined arms.
I mean, 47 games and 2 losses? I'm not that good. I guess you guys must be getting better games though.
Well, I heard it's made by Ubisoft, correct? Does it use that insane DRM? I dunno about anyone else, but I'm avoiding any Ubisoft products until they stop that, I have enough internet issues without dealing with that level of frustration.

Generally we get a group together in the Steam Group. It's really nice to be able to rely on your teammates, and people seem to join 2v2s and 3v3s more readily.
The net code is kinda crappy, but getting a game together isn't hard during peak hours. I usually get three or four good games for each horribly laggy one. Games where someone drops early hardly count, since they end so fast.

It's a free public beta. Other than steam, I don't think there's any DRM.

Hopefully that means the final product won't have it either then. I have the little R.U.S.E. thing on my steam list I believe, don't know how I got it (I assume it came with some other game?) so might as well check it out.
Edit: Blarg, I'm getting this confused with the other STEAM thread, this one has an OP I can read and all that, so I can stop asking dumb questions.
So far, my best results have been by simply sending infantry in with tanks. I blitz the zone, push his buildings with the tanks, and send the infantry ahead. If he wants to kill the tanks with the Tank Destroyers, he has to close with the infantry, which quickly kills them.
Ambushes also work, I've had a couple games where my enemy destroys my main troop mass, but neglects to bring recon forward when he pushes my base, a couple infantry in a forest or city will massacre even jumbo tanks.
alright, i just tried this game but there doesn't seem to be a tutorial of any kind in it
where should i go to learn about how it works
from the battle i played against the cpu, there are supply depots that you build stuff on, and then you fight their tanks with your tanks, and then i quit because it seemed a little boring
Had a pretty lame loss last night in a 1v1.
Playing on the small 1v1 map... i forget the name.
At the outset I saw my opponent send out a handful of construction trucks in the directions of the 4 supply depots... so I thought.. "he's expanding his economy quickly, I'll do the same". So i built 4 supply dumps and a barracks. Which left with me with no cash on hand. Shortly after that I realize that 2 of the trucks have gone right past the supply depots and are headed my way. He blitz's them as well, so they are coming fast.
Too poor to build anything substantial, I pump out a few infantry and watch as the trucks stop and build some sort of bunker within range of everything I own. The infantry I built get mowed down, any supply trucks I have incoming are destroyed, and the trucks I send out to build anything are quickly destroyed. I somehow managed to get an artillery factory up, and managed to destroy one of the bunkers, but by that time he was on top of me with his own offensive units and it was all over.
While I suppose a valid strategy (all's fair in love and war and whatnot), it just felt incredibly cheap. Probably something I could have defended against easily had I realized where the trucks were headed, but with no money to build anything, I couldn't get something built and in position fast enough to take out the incoming trucks.
Anyone else seen/do this? Is it fairly common? This was the first game I've played against someone I don't know, everyone else I've played have been friends.
I haven't seen this before. What nations were you two playing as?
I'd bet it was a German Blockhaus bunker. They have a 600m range AT cannon in there, and a 300m range flamethrower. They cost $50, though, so it's not like it's a cheap option.
Also very easy to defend against. In 1v1s never spend all your money on an econ boom start, you'll get beaten by any rush, all the time.
Sounds like a risky plan on his part. My normal build order is like this(as france):
Three supply depo's
Armour building
Two Recon
Upgrade medium tank to SAU40
Two SAU40's
This tends to give me a lot of options. It lets me force the enemy to react, slowing his boom if he's trying for that. It defends against pretty much any rush, except for bomber rush which I've never actually had happen since the vip beta, but that would just force me to camo/silence and build AA(or fighters, as french AA is totally lame). In a bunker situation like this, the SAU40's likely would have just artillery cannon'd the bunkers, and then pushed on him.

Yeah, I mostly blame myself for letting it happen. I shouldn't have blown my wad on the supply depo's. I should have had some kind of offensive unit around to take care of that. Ideally taking out the construction trucks before they even built the bunker.
If you find the cash to upgrade those infantry they turn into murder machines.
I cleared a garrisoned forest without recon, with just 10 upgraded USSR infantry.
Out of curiosity, is the USSR considered to be "ez mode"? I started playing online a bit yesterday and got two games in. As a complete noob I had a Major Victory against Italy and then a Total Victory against the USA.
USSR certainly has strong options both in early and late game, but I wouldn't consider playing USSR easy mode.
They might have better anti-air than france, but it stops there. Fighter are mediocre and the mobile aa and the aa artillery are cheap and can take a beating, but don't dish out so well.
There are many people playing online who simply aren't very good at this, they don't use recon, do not build correct counter units...

USSR lacks reliable Air cover, and is extremely expensive to upgrade. Individual units are cheap, but they aren't very able to change their strategy on the fly. They can spam infantry like nobody else, but their AT and Air bases are expensive, and require a good deal of expensive research to become useful.

Interesting stuff. I usually have a lot of Anti-Air guns and those have been key to both games. Both times the opponent completely outmatched me in terms of airpower, but I was just pushing the front forward with AA cover and artillery. The Italian player slowed my advance before I got to his base. The US player had spread his base out more and I double-blitzed a stack of four T-34s to his airbase and destroyed a bunch of aircraft on the ground.
Yeah those t-34 really come in handy once you have researched them. Cheap, fast, and effective. I like playing USSR in team games when i have air cover by a British ally or a German with ME-262 researched. Very effective combination.
T-34s are pretty awesome, they're really good at taking and holding the center of a map early on. I'm having trouble figuring out how to transition from them to dealing with enemy jumbo tanks though. Anyone have any ideas? USSR fighter-bombers are pretty awesome, but getting them requires a $110 investment, which is more than five T-34s, or an upgrading to and producing 3 mobile AA.
Also, the super-slow recon truck means that if your enemy forces you to retreat or rolls out tank destroyers, you probably can't go anywhere near forests for quite a while.

I hate playing as Italy so much. Germany and America for me.
I do like the use of what is essentially an 88 for an AT/AA bunker. One shot, and the plane's retreating.
But yeah, I think I like the French the most. Gotta love the Sau-40, with a howitzer built in.
