Setting a table for 5 people

Anyway I'm cooking a christmas dinner for my flat tomorrow, and there are five of us. We have a large dining table but I'm currently unsure of the best layout of chairs; two on each side and one at the end, or one on each end and two people on one long side, and one on the other?

To complicate matters slightly the legs for the table are each approximately a third in from the end of the table, obstructing legs when sat slightly.

Thanks in advance!

Set the chairs so that your guests' legs are the least obstructed by the table legs?

Well if you're cooking and hosting, you'll probably eat in the kitchen anyway. Just seat one on each side of the table and pull up a chair wherever it looks most convenient in my opinion. Some people use a lot of room, some don't.

What is the family makeup? I am assuming you have a rectangular table. I would put your parents on one side, and your siblings or other relatives on the other long side, and have you sit at the head of the table. If it was at your parents house, i'd say sit next to your mother, but have your mother sit along the side in the seat nearest to your father.

Two on each side and one at the head of the table. The cook usually sits at the head, it's kind of the traditional place of honor.

Huh? Since when does the host not join the table for dinner?
