I've never had this happen to me before (yeah, that's what he said); my computer was working just fine last night: It's survived a move to the UK, and replacing the cooling fan (no problems there: I played 6 hours of Dragon Age just fine). I think the last thing it was set to do was install some windows updates. Now when I turn it on it just has a single white text line on a black background that says "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key_"
Obviously I suspect the windows update since that was the last thing to occur. I had also downloaded the Prophesies of Pendor mod for Mount & Blade, but hadn't unzipped it yet.
It's a self built computer, and I'm running the 32-bit version of Windows Vista. I also recently purchased a toshiba laptop that has Windows 7 installed on it. Is it possible for me to use the laptop's disc to install it on the desktop?
Update: I'm in the BIOS setup and no SATA drives are detected. Now I'm still new to this whole discussion, but I'm pretty sure that means that my hard drive isn't talking to the MOBO. I double checked all the connections and moved the SATA data cable to a new port. Ran the BIOS again and found the hard drive, and now it's booting up just fine.

Still, I wonder what happened.
Perhaps the connection on the mobo for the SATA port got loose and partly disconnected or perhaps the cable itself is slightly duff. I'd try connecting it back to the same port as before and see if it doesn't detect it.
Also, on some mobos you can disable the ports.. so if you connect something on that port it won't detect anything, just something to be aware of.
