Remote File Access for Mac

Is there a way to access files remotely (i.e. not on the same network) from one non-server Mac to another? I figured out how to turn on file sharing, which works on Macs that are on the same network, but ideally I would like to access my work files from home.

You could try Screen Sharing. It's built in to OS X, it's either in the Preferences or Utilities folder. It's essentially Remote Desktop Connection for the Mac. You set it up on one computer and it gives you a domain/ip address to enter on the other, then you can log in and access your work files that way.

yes...it will allow you to grab files from your home machine, work on them wherever you are, and then push them back to home....you can't work on one single copy remotely this way but it's essentially the same thing

So it looks like it might have worked, but my ip address changed over night. Is there a way to configure a static IP address?

I'm guessing my work has a firewall. Would this prevent remote access?

Well, at my office, what we've done is just have the router direct inquiries on the correct ports to our local machine. They are presented with a Login and Password screen just like they were on a local connection. Best way to test it is to find out your external IP, set up your file sharing stuff, then go to a wifi place and try it. (this is with a firewall. You just have to configure it to forward that port information to your local IP)

Hmmm... if I have to configure the router here, it's not going to work. The IS department here "doesn't support Macs". Any other way to do it?

iDisk and set up some folders to sync. Or Dropbox might do what you want.
