Okay yeah, I changed my lineup and its working out way better already (technically it was fine, but fine isn't good enough):
Gladiator, Hoplite
Arbalist, Prince, Wildling
I have a feeling the Wildling is going to be my best friend for FOE and boss encounters.
wildlings are pretty much this game's hexer, except their mechanic is more interesting and probably less overpowered.
The first FOE I was able to defeat was largely thanks to my wildling's bird (level 1 bird skill, level 4 or so pet-status-inflicting-chance-up skill) keeping its head bound 80% of the fight to keep it from using its confuse-an-entire-row skill. And a second FOE joined the fight halfway through, and I still managed to pull it off by using some medicas and an amrita on my monk.
So this game has introduced a new level of brutality; making money hard to come by. I've got some introductory B3F items available at the shop but still can't afford stuff I unlocked from B2F. Goddamn it.
No Farmer? Put one point in each gathering skill on all your dudes. Pretty small skill investment, and for how often you go back to town to heal and restock, you get a lot of use out of em.
But I want my team to grow beefy and strong!
I might make a 5-man farmer team and just make a dash inside for the gather points.
Yeah make a 5 farmer team, give them each points in Listen to Experience and the Gather-all class skill, and you can make several hundred En a day just running to the chop point on the first floor. Once they get high enough level to not get wiped out before they can escape on B2 you can get even more from the take point there, and so on with mining on B3. Plus you can specialize them differently so one can get the warp wire skill, one can work towards the revive-outside-battle skill, etc.
edit: fuck I quoted the wrong thing

So B6F:
In the central room where you find the bodies of explorers and stuff, where the three fish appear. The first time I went in there, I was unprepared and lost the fight. After prepping myself up properly, I went back to the room. I stepped toward the fish, and they all circled around instead of coming at me. I immediately realized this was operating like the other FOE groups on this floor and they were just going to walk circles, so I stepped to the side, let them clear the way, and I walked right out unscathed! (though, when I left the room they went red and tried to come at me)
And then Olympia was like "Oh crap you killed the fish!" while I was left thinking, "Well, not really, I just-" but she keeps interrupting with her villain stuff. When I get back from work it'll be time to pursue her!
By the way, skilling up hoplites to operate as tank archetypes from MMO's is actually a successful thing to do in this game. :^:
So, my gf had sent me her copy for me to try out. I had started to play the first one but didn't get too far because I kept getting the sense I was doing it wrong. Also I have a backlog longer than the Nile.
I do want to give this one a serious shot. Are there any general tips, things to watch out for that I should keep in mind. I decided to make my starting party Princess, Arbalist, Gladiator, Zodiac, Hoplite, and a Ninja setting in the wings.
TAKE YOUR DAMN TIME: Seems simple enough but it really is the best advice. Regular enemies in this game are deadly. F.O.E.s are even more deadly (especially Red ones and ones that swarm) and bosses can be impossibly hard. You can mitigate this by saving often and taking your time doing quests and filling the map and not running from regular fights. You're going to need the levels to survive and gain skills and the drops to make new equipment. Always bring a warp thread with you after you unlock them. Stock up on healing potions.
MAKE A PARTY OF GATHERERS: Use farmers to gather stuff then warp out. This is good money.
SPEND SKILLS WISELY: http://www.intothelabyrinth.net/etrianodyssey3/skillsim/ will tell you what the skills do. Notice that TP cost goes up (most of the time) as the damage goes up. Try not to stack damage spells up too high. Since you're going with princess know that the ability that heals at the end of the turn if she is full up and the one that restores health while walking are insanely valuable early on. Also try and have a decent spread of elemental damage in this. You have a good party for this. Hoplite gets a great Thunder skill. Zodiac and Arbalist can do the other two. Gladiator can handle the rare bash. Princess can do slash. The best skill for zodiacs are dark ether and anything that boosts damage without going specifically into a tree. I still have exactly one point in fire mastery and the first fire spell and my Zodiac still outdamages everyone because of the surrounding skills.
SEA QUESTS GIVE EXP: They cost zero to do. If you die you lose no time because it saved right before it. If you win you get exp and a reward. The second boss is eventually farmable for 30k, which is a ton of money. They are also the primary source of limit breaks.
GET AS MANY EQUIPMENT CHOICES AS POSSIBLE: The bulk of your stats come from equipment. If the lady at the shop says you need more of something to unlock it, try to get those things. Pay for whatever the man at the bar wants (Under gather information) to learn about how to get some of the conditional drops, or read the list from a few pages ago.
DON'T PANIC: You will die. I'm a fucking expert at these games and I die all the time doing stupid shit because I get cocky or just end up in a bad way. If a FOE ever backs you against a wall you are unable to run.
LIMIT BREAKS ARE A FREE TURN: Use them. Remember if you switch up your party you need to fix them before going into battle. The damage for the attack ones is based off of the stats of who used it, so give elemental ones to zodiacs!
TRY TRY AGAIN: Sometimes you'll find that your party just isn't working out. Try raising a new guy (using the bench exp ability or grinding sea quests) and putting him in. Your specific party is pretty balanced, but you never know.
Equip spears on them and put them in the back. They'll be able to do some good damage even in the back row.
Also, save those beast summons for when you really need them like during an FOE battle or a really tough encounter since they're hideously expensive to use unless you have a Zodiac use Dark Ether on the turn you summon it. You can also learn Dismiss Beast and get a refund on your TP, but random battles usually end too quickly for you to dismiss it.
It's up to you on which beast you want to use but I find the insect and snake to be useful.
Snake so you can cut the damage on those heavy hitting enemies for a while and insect because of the poison attribute.

also, i'm noticing a 'CHECK' thing drops down when there's something on a wall that can be interacted with; does this mean i can give up hitting A on every wall i come across hoping to find secrets?

Yeah pretty much. I just look at each wall every step I take, basically. If there's something there, it'll tell you with that "Check" thing.
I'm enjoying the dungeon side well enough -- still barely touched the second floor; got killed by a frog and decided to rework the party a bit, so I'm leveling up the other five classes to see what they're like -- but what I really love is the ocean exploring. There's a lovely sense of discovery; almost everywhere I go I find something else, fund a few more trips, get a few more spaces, see a new target on the horizon I can't quite reach yet. I just found some raisins, which are the same number of moves as sheep cheese but 30en cheaper, and I found some black pepper and bull ants to sell the same trip. One thing I found (Niter) was specifically spotted by my Zodiac; wonder if I only found that because I had that class in my party.
There have been a few of these discoveries in the dungeons, but I'm enjoying that aspect of the game so much I wish there were a lot more. I'm in danger of only going to dungeons to grind cash enough to fund more sailing.

I basically did that for awhile, sailing as much as possible and only going into the dungeon for cash to fund sailing trips. Unless I've missed something, though, you get to the point where you can't really explore any further even though there is more stuff out there. I'm guessing that I need to level up enough to finish my currently available Sea Quests to get ship parts that let me get further.

I'm gonna be going for the Wildling's ooze pet next; I just maxed out the insect skill. I did a sea quest where a Wildling had an elephant pet and I was amazed at its HP / TP amount compared to my insect. So the animal types count.

Yeah, I have my Wildling's Elephant at level 4 with level 4 Beast Soul, and he's a beast. Has 70 more HP than my Hoplite, and takes less damage from physical attacks.
I have half the mind to just drop my Hoplite, and have Elephant or Tiger be my tank with Sacrifice. The main draw was Provoke, but it seems largely useless where I'm at, where almost every monster has attacks that hit a line or your entire party.
Already have my Wildling subclassed to Hoplite for Long Stride since she stays in the back anyway, so I might as well give her the Element reduction skills.

Hey, just to sate my curiosity, everyone sound off their party member genders.
Gladiator (male, the more young / dashing looking one, alt colors with red eyes), Hoplite (female, pigtails, alt colors with red eyes)
Arbalist (female, one with the cap and alt colors for brown hair / green eyes), Prince (male, duh, long hair, default pale-blonde), Wildling (male, default colors, younger)
... How many of you Wildling users went for the jailbait? Or gladiator users went for the underboob? ADMIT TO IT. SHOW YOUR SHAME.
Anyway once I have the proper healing spell on my prince and put him in the front row, my insect being in the back row as a result should make things way better. Because it getting one-shot in important battles really stings my nads.

Having made one of everything available now, I went...
Hoplite (Female, Pigtails)
Gladiator (Male, though I picked the red-haired one that looks like a flat-chested girl anyway)
Buccaneer (Female, Blonde)
Princess (Female, clearly, Purple hair)
Ninja (Female, the one with the mask. And is it just me or does one of the female ninja look male, and one of the male ninja look female)
Monk (Male, Old man)
Wildling (Male, Bigger one with the awesome face mask that has the jaw attached)
Arbalist (Female, blonde with the hat and goggles)
Zodiac (Male, grey haired one that looks stereotypically evil)
Farmer (Well, I made five of these. But the one I made two of is the one that looks like Alice)
No idea what Yggdroid I'll make, but I'm definitely making the old man Shogun.
Prince (The taller male one)
Gladiator (Third choice)
Hoplite (The one with pigtails)
Buccaneer (I made two. Male Buccaneer has the eyepatch. Female Buccaneer is the blond one with the nice chest.)
Ninja (Female one with the mask.)
Monk (Female redhead)
Zodiac (Fourth choice alternate color)
Wildling (Fourth choice)
Arbalist (Second choice)
Farmer (Made four of them but the Alice lookalike was my first choice.)
Wriggle (Princess, shota male, alternate hair. Because he DOES look like Wriggle!)
Kronk (Hoplite, male, sideburned one. Because the name and portrait fit a stupid wall of meat, which is going to be this guy's job)
Lezard (Zodiac, evil portrait. Because come on, an evil astrological caster? Got to be Lezard)
Shea (Arbalest, female, last one. Okay, I admit, this is for pure fanservice. It's like they ticked all the points that I like with this portrait :winky:)
Mumbo (Wildling, first Male one. Name needs no explanation, I hope)
And then in reserve,
Recette (Farmer, second one, alternate color. Had to be done)
Lu-Tze (Monk, old guy. Easy reference)
I'll explore a bit before getting around to making more guys.
EDIT: Hey, guys, about Limits - are they fixed once you teach them, or can they be changed? Moved around? I'm just doubting whether to use the ones you're given in the beginning or not...
Also, holy crap, poor Shea just got her face eaten in one bite by a giant lynx. RUN LIKE HELL!
I forgot to use the Formaldehyde the first time I fought Narmer. Is his conditional drop worth killing time waiting for him to repop or would it kind of be irrelevant now that I'm well into the sixth floor?
Honestly all three games are good and well worth playing. The important thing is playing them in order because each one is any improvement over the last.
Anyway, my (current) Guild:
It's another EO game, and that means it's time for more character profiles!
*~*
"A mere five hundred En for travel expenses? Has my father lost his wits?!"
Alexis reined in a sigh. "Your Majesty, the entire point of this expedition was to prove that you could stand on your own two feet. As it is, five hundred is more than sufficient for our needs."
The prince sighed dramatically and the next leg of the journey was carried on in silence until the crest of the next hill was traversed, and they were now staring at a collection of buildings and roads.
"So that's Armoroad," Jules said softly, almost to himself.
"Please try to remember that your actions here reflect on not only your family name, but the entirety of the Empire," Alexis said softly.
There was a brief chuckle. "Not to worry, Alexis, I'm sure your incessant nagging has thoroughly drilled it into my head by now."
Lord and retainer shared the briefest of smiles. And then, on an unspoken signal, the two stepped forward towards Armoroad.
*~*
Jules Vernessus Maximillian the Fourteenth
Male Prince
Age: 20
Hit: Exotic Dishes
Miss: Scratchy Clothing
"No, I didn't bring along an 'Arad Knee Thread', whatever that is. Why do you ask?"
A longstanding tradition of the sons of the Maximillian Empire was that at their Coming Of Age, they were to proclaim a vow before the Goddess and make good on that boast. A minor prince of the bloodline, Jules was no exception. Owing to the consumption of a rather unhealthy amount of alcohol the night before the ceremony, Jules' next clear memory was of servants helping to pack his things and set out for Armoroad. He was understandably rather dismayed, but perked up considerably when Alexis pointed out that Armoroad was famed for its wide variety of exotic seafood dishes.
Attempts to project a regal air, but his rather embarrassing ignorance of relatively mundane matters tends to leave him with egg on his face more often than not. Not too proud to realize that he is less experienced than many of the people he hires, he prefers to stay in the back row and focus on rejuvenating his allies.
*~*
Alexis Wulfenbach, Knight of the Golden Eye
Blonde Female Hoplite
Age: 20
Hit: Armour Polishing, Jules
Miss: Rust, being mistaken for a boy
"No, your Majesty, I do not believe that mushroom to be edible. Please put it down."
Prince Jules' childhood friend, confidante, trainer and bodyguard in equal measure, she has served him and the Maximillian family faithfully for as far back as she can remember. When Jules inadvertently swore to conquer the Yggdrasil Labyrinth, the Emperor personally requested Alexis to accompany the Prince to aid him in his trials. (Unspoken was the tacit understanding that he wouldn't last a week without her.)
Alexis also finds herself rather attracted towards the Prince, although her station prevents her from making her feelings known.
Mindful of value of balance in all matters, Alexis is continuously studying both the spear and the shield to maximise her effectiveness in combat. Her study into the cartographical arts also means that she's stuck with drawing the maps.
*~*
Geoffrey von Paulus
Aged Male Monk
Age: 56
Hit: Bodybuilding
Miss: Unnecessary violence
"How hard you kick and punch is all in the mind."
Having practiced the fine art of focusing his Qi for a lifetime, Geoffrey has mastered the techniques of manipulating Qi for healing and aiding others, and has taken on an apprentice. Unfortunately and much to his dismay, said apprentice apparently prefers the more physical aspects of the ascetic path instead of the healing and gentler properties.
He has journeyed to Armoroad along with his apprentice to join a Guild and hopefully let her see the value of teamwork and supporting one's comrades. Spends an inordinate amount of time in the Butterfly Bistro, much to his apprentice's chagrin.
*~*
Adrian Sanders
Red-haired Female Monk
Age: 16
Hit: Folk songs
Miss: Alcohol
"Never met a beast whose lights I couldn't punch out."
Geoffrey's apprentice since young. While her master has devoted himself to mastery of the Arts of Healing and Rejuvenation, Adrian herself has taken an inclination to the Art of Punching Things Really Hard. Despite their apparent disagreement on how one should use the energy of their bodies, the two remain close, and when her Master requested she join her on their expedition to Armoroad, she readily agreed. Part of her enthusiasm has to do with the prospect of meeting 'cute, tough guys', seeing as she appears to value both attributes in equal measures.
Where's a wooden amulet on a necklace under her clothing, and is reluctant to talk about it beyond claiming that it is a keepsake.
*~*
John Rook
Young Male Buccaneer
Age: 18
Hit: Sea shanties
Miss: Eyepatches
"No, I don't draw out my 'R's. And I find the suggestion that I should rather baffling."
A former privateer, Rook has decided that he'd prefer to earn his coin in a slightly more legal profession and has taken up the mantle of adventuring. Owns the 'St. Eris' which he lets the rest of the Paragon Guild use whenever the feel an inclination to head out to sea for a bit. Feels most comfortable when wielding a rapier, and his nimble footwork allows him to follow up ally attacks with his own.
Has taken up a friendly rivalry with Midori, and has a secret crush on her.
*~*
Midori Ayasatoi
Young Female Ninja
Age: 17
Hit: Kitsune masks
Miss: Insects
"I'll name this one 'Fluffykins Cuddlypoops'."
Found unconscious in a back alley of Armoroad, Midori has relatively little memory of her past, but her body has apparently not forgotten her skills at stealth or combat. Hidden memories of some terrible secret of the Labyrinth has led her to seek out work at the Guilds in the hopes of discovering more about her past.
Is also in love with fox masks and her room at the inn is stuffed to overflowing with them. She also names each of them, to her Guildmate's minor discomfort.
Has a friendly rivalry with Rook, and a secret crush on him.
*~*
Pure
Blonde Male Farmer
Age: 15
Hit: Naps
Miss: Work
"*yawn* Huh, whassat? We leavin' 'ready?"
A young and lazy farmer, he joined the Paragon Guild with the understanding that his primary task was to help them gather resources.
He later found out his secondary task was to help them fight monsters, and is now frantically poring over his contract, looking for an escape clause.
*~*
'Clay'
Dark-haired Gladiator
Age: 25
Hit: Arm Wrestling
Miss: 'Softness'
"Heh... cute. I can take you all!"
Left homeless and destitute after a war rolled over her sleepy home village, the young woman was eventually captured by the victorious invaders. Eventually they decided that they would have her fight for their amusement and sent her into the gladiator's ring.
Luck and skill was with her, and a quick string of unbroken victories made her a fan favourite - and her owner's prized slave. One night, she seized an opportunity caused by an errant fire in the estate and fled, eluding her pursuers as far as Armoroad, where she joined the Paragon Guild under the assumed name of 'Clay' to elude her pursuers. She has thus far refused to reveal her true name to anyone.
Fights most comfortably with a club to smash through the enemy. General antipathy for authority makes her not get along with Jules, and she sees Alexis as a rival, although the Hoplite remains entirely unaware of such things.
*~*
Alice 'Sidney' Marguerite
Young Female Arbalist
Age: 19
Hit: The Butterfly Bistro's Quencher Special
Miss: Fancy dresses
"Ain't nothing gonna survive a four foot arrow through the craw!"
A native of Armoroad, and daughter of one of the more prominent merchant houses (for what that was worth after the Calamity had wrecked their shipping lanes a hundred years ago), Alice had always entertained dreams of helping to restore Armoroad to its former glory. However, her temperament and lack of talent at niceties and negotiation meant she was unlikely to be able to do a good job in taking over her father's financial empire when it was time for the reins to be passed down.
And so she settled for the next best thing - venturing into the Labyrinth, finding out the secrets of the past, and hopefully amassing enough loot to help with the restoration of Armoroad. Quickly became fast friends with Adrian upon joining the Paragon Guild.
*~*
Melina Koolhaas
Brunette Female Farmer
Age: 15
Hit: Mushrooms
Miss: Dark, damp places
"Hoo, this trek... is more draining than I thought! ... I'm perfectly fine though, don't worry about me."
The daughter of two great adventurers, Melina had always longed to follow in her parent's footsteps, but lacked the endurance and skill to become a full-fledged warrior in her own right. When the Paragon offered her a spot in the Guild, she quickly joined up, vowing to improve herself as much as possible so she could become a great explorer herself.
Until then, her constant study of the Labyrinth has given her invaluable insight into the nature of the flora in the area, not to mention she knows how to harvest its plentiful resources, so she's still useful to the Guild.
Is irritated by Pure's lackadaisical attitude towards work, and is constantly pushing her fellow Farmer to help out with the Guild's duties more.
*~*
Sar'Vok Atahualpa
Older Male Wildling
Age: 32
Hit: Roughing it
Miss: Being indoors
"..."
The former Tun'Ga of an island tribe to the East, Atahualpa has handed the mantle of Leadership over to his eldest son and set off for greater challenges. Eventually, he heard tales of the wondrous and unconquered Labyrinth, and has journeyed to Armoroad to test the forest and prove his strength.
Unused to the local tongues, he rarely speaks save for acknowledging requests and commands. Midori, feeling similarly displaced, has taken to spending more time with him. (She's also trying to get him to learn how to summon foxes, with little success so far.)
*~*
Asmodeus Frei Varn
Young Male Zodiac
Age: 24
Hit: Quiet and solitude
Miss: Socializing
"Hmm... intriguing. Our chances of survival refuse to go any higher no matter our actions."
A student at the Great Library of Sovelude, Asmodeus was commissioned by his teacher to venture to the Labyrinth and to attempt to gather what knowledge he could for the sake of Library. Considering it largely a fool's game, he nonetheless fufills his duties to the best of his ability.
When not called to go Labyrinth hunting, he is usually found by the port, head buried in one tome or another. Has no real friends in the Guild, but no real enemies either.
I, too, forgot to use my Formaldehyde on Narmer, and missed his conditional drop. I'm planning on catching up on some sea exploration, gonna try to get to the lighthouse and unlock the Sea Quests. That should make the time for a rematch come up much quicker and cheaper.

EO2 is honestly pretty much better than EO1 in every way, there's basically no reason to play the first if you have the second. It's way better balanced than the first one, and includes all of the classes that were in EO1 as well (along with some new ones)
EO2 is more like a straight up improvement to 1, while EO3 feels more like a new game due to the total class rehaul.
Also, when I fought Narmer that fuck blinded my entire front row on the same turn I used the Formaldehyde. All of them missed, and my very first attack the following turn killed him.
I didn't want to go through the whole fight again however so I let it be.

The real issue with princesses is to make sure they don't have the most hp in the row as that is one of the more frequent attack routines in EO games.
EO1 and 2 have some interesting attack routines, though its still pretty simple.
wildlings are pretty much this game's hexer, except their mechanic is more interesting and probably less overpowered.
And then Olympia was like "Oh crap you killed the fish!" while I was left thinking, "Well, not really, I just-" but she keeps interrupting with her villain stuff. When I get back from work it'll be time to pursue her!
By the way, skilling up hoplites to operate as tank archetypes from MMO's is actually a successful thing to do in this game. :^:
Tanks also work in EO1 and EO2. It's sort of not needed in EO1 outside of the anti-x skills because of Immunize.
Could we maybe put this in the OP?
spent over an hour, and still haven't dropped down in to the dungeon. just reading skills, etc.
so, umm... gladiator... swords or clubs?
which one will i get a good weapon for first?
Mace spec is single target oriented, Sword spec is more multitarget. Mace spec also has a Ice element skill for conditional drops if needed.
As for weapons, from what I've seen so far, they're about even in terms of power and when you can get them. However,
also, i'm noticing a 'CHECK' thing drops down when there's something on a wall that can be interacted with; does this mean i can give up hitting A on every wall i come across hoping to find secrets?
Yeah pretty much. I just look at each wall every step I take, basically. If there's something there, it'll tell you with that "Check" thing.
Not looking forward to trying to totally finish the first ocean map though. Ocean mapping seems to much more tedious.
Princess (Female, Blond), Hoplite (Male, Epic sideburns), Gladiator (Male, Red hair)
Monk (Male, Bowl cut and glasses), Wildling (Female, Older of the two)
The only cool looking Wilding is the first one, I think it's a dude.
Hoplite: Female, pigtails
Gladiator: Manly Manowar album cover star
Monk: Female, redhead
Wildling: Male, younger
Zodiac: Male, snide dude
For the record: There is nothing wrong with underboob.
Edit: Oh boy, it was a missing wall piece! That was fun. Anyway, onwards with the game.
Anyway, my (current) Guild:

An Ice specialist.

More to come later once I've created them.

I, too, forgot to use my Formaldehyde on Narmer, and missed his conditional drop. I'm planning on catching up on some sea exploration, gonna try to get to the lighthouse and unlock the Sea Quests. That should make the time for a rematch come up much quicker and cheaper.
And I guess I should list Guild Adamant...
Erika - Hoplite (Female 1)
Aria - Arbalist (Female 2)
Summer - Zodiac (Female 2, alt color)
Symphony - Monk (Male 1)
Thomas - Farmer (Male 1)
Alice - Farmer (Female 2)
Tina - Princess (Female 1)
Stone - Gladiator (Male 1)
Shadow - Ninja (Male 1)
Alma - Wildling (Female 2)
EO2 is more like a straight up improvement to 1, while EO3 feels more like a new game due to the total class rehaul.
Also, when I fought Narmer that fuck blinded my entire front row on the same turn I used the Formaldehyde. All of them missed, and my very first attack the following turn killed him.
I didn't want to go through the whole fight again however so I let it be.
F f1 - Yui
F f1 - Ui
W f1 - Azu~nyan
A f1 - Jun
F m2 - Henroid
G m2 - Rent
N f2 - Lexxy
B f2 - Kochi
P f1 - Joule
H f2 - Hoplite
M f1 - Monk
Z f1 - Zodiac
Then I found out about alternate colors!
P f1a - Eyes5
P f2a - Athene
And like 15min ago I tried to make a harvest party
F f2 - Mugi
