Is dragon age: origins pretty decent on the 360 or should it really be played on a pc? Also what are some other good, recent, games in the same fantasy type genre. To be more specific, lets assume diablo 2 was my favorite game of all time, what new games would you recommend? Thanks in advance.

From what I've read, it's fairly decent on the 360/PS3, but the PC is really the definite version. More control of your companions, better graphics, more enemies, etc.
I guess it really depends on what type of system you have, though.
Also to note are the mods for the PC version of Dragon Age - I'm generally not a mods kinda person, however there's a number of small tweaks and such that I wouldn't want to play without now.
It's fine on the 360. The only serious difference is that it will sometimes give you enemies in waves as opposed to all at once (not sure if this is meant to be a difficulty tweak or a system resources thing, because there are some fights when you get hit with large numbers of enemies all at once.)
The graphics aren't bad either. We are again beginning to reach the point where PCs regularly outdo consoles graphically, but it looks good on the 360.
If you have a PC that kills the requirements I would get it on the PC, but that's true of every game.

i need to look into some PC games. i put my wife together a stat monster machine so i should be able to kill any pc game in terms of system requirements.
People I have seen are acting like there isn't much difference, but the 360 version of DA:O, which I own, looks like shit compared to the PC. The isometric view is breathtaking on the PC, and the way you will be seeing most of the game. On 360 they only have the 3rd person view.
And yeah, torchlight pretty much is Diablo 2, so your only complaint might be that it is too similar.

I have DA:O on the PS3 mostly because I'm not on Windows. If I was, I would have gotten it on that platform. I'm very happy with the game on the console and still have a lot of fun with it, but the mods and tweaks that even now are already out (like the ones that make rogues not suck) are pretty nice.
It may only tangentially be fantasy, but Batman: Arkham Asylum is fantastic.

Is the gameplay on the 360 pretty decent? I'm guessing the combat system was set up with pc's in mind, so I guess I'm wondering if it transfers to consoles pretty well. Also are the differences in what is available pretty extreme? In other words, is it going to feel like a completely different game on the pc if I get all the mods versus on the 360 with all the downloadable content?

Dragon Age is very much a PC game. It works on consoles, and its still a good RPG on consoles, but it controls better on a PC.
Aside from some combat scaling changes (more enemies at one time on the PC, enemies in waves on the 360) and the obvious control changes, its still the same game on the 360. I'd say the control changes are a pretty big deal, but if you hate the game on consoles you'll probably hate it on PC too.
Have you played other Bioware games on the 360? Knights of the Old Republican maybe? That's a pretty good comparison, although the control disparity between PC and console is more pronounced in Dragon Age.
To answer your other question: If you loved Diablo 2, get Torchlight.

Dragon age is fantastic on the PC.
You should also check out Titan Quest. It should be pretty cheap now and was a fun enough diablo cone.
Seconding Titan Quest. Torchlight is bland and overrated imo. Titan Quest has heaps of depth in terms of character builds, which is a major factor in my enjoyment of such games.

The console controls with nested radial menus similar to mass effect's; you can pause and navigate through them to issue commands. The PC seems to use a more traditional baldur's gate-esque button setup, although you can pause there too.
The radial menus are pretty intuitive really. The 360 only has 6 bindable buttons, but I didn't find myself using even the ones I had all that frequently as opposed to pausing to issue commands.

Counter to this - I can't imagine playing DAO on a console well. It's a surprisingly hard RPG! 6 bindable buttons? forget all that, you can use mouse and keyboard through the menus and have so many more spells and abilities at your behest. The game even has low requirements for PC. It seems the level cap is higher on PC just as an extra bonus for us Baldur's Gate fans.
I think the comments above mentioning waves of enemies might be a console only thing. You can strategically pull enemies at times on PC, but usually you get rushed with overwhelming odds.

*disclaimer, this is from research done, not actual play time.*
The reviews I've read/watched have said the difference is in the play style. The PC version is optimized for pausing/micromanaging. The 360 version is optimized to play like an action RPG, with no pausing needed. The functionality is still there, but not needed as much and since the top down view is not really available in the 360 version the pause/command options are limited as you can't get a good view of what's going on. If I can find the video review that shows this I'll link it.
I know it ain't fantasy, and it ain't a 3rd person game, and you don't use magic, but the similarities between Borderlands and Diablo II are striking. It's like a first person shooter diablo 2 set in the world of Mad Maxx.
