i personally wouldn't say it looks like shit, but i would say it's going to take some unlikely feats of software engineering to make it any more than another eyetoy or peice of gimmicky webcam software
so far with the milo thing and the horribly awkward ball kicking videos i've not seen evidence that it's going to happen
It's not really an objective thing. I think it looks like shit, and I'm going to continue to say it looks like shit.
It does look like shit. [ur l=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2r9cKjNQe4]Natal looks like shit unless you're a spaz.[/url] This is the best demonstration of what's wrong with the concept. Look at that first kid jumping around like a spaz. I'll never be able to do that. I can swing a Wiimote but there's no way I'll do a kick like that.
The final implementation will probably be more reasonable but for right now it looks like shit.
More than just not being able to do that, why would I WANT to do that?

Exactly. I had a Power Pad when I was a kid. It wasn't very long before I was on the ground, beating that thing with my fists because it was too exhausting to do it the proper way. Natal will be no different. Not to mention one attempt at a spinning kick would probably send my $100 Samus figure crashing into the wall. You thought flying Wiimotes were bad? Wait until flailing idiots using Natal destroy property AND bodies.

Bet on some kind of boot screen warning of extreme motions and such. People will still go all out, but they won't be able to say 'Nobody told me to take it easy!'

Oh yeah, the idea is comical. Move your furniture out of the way because you're playing a fighter. Make sure you don't roundhouse your television!
In a small apartment like mine, it's not a matter of whether I can shadow box my videogame it's a matter of safety and convenience.
I have to explain my geekiness enough as it is when I'm pushing buttons. I can only imagine how wierd a hardcore Natal user might seem.
"For years radios had been operated by means of pressing buttons and turning dials; then as the technology became more sophisticated the controls were made touch-sensitive -- you merely had to brush the panels with your fingers; now all you had to do was wave your hand in the general direction of the components and hope. It saved a lot of muscular expenditure, of course, but meant that you had to sit infuriatingly still if you wanted to keep listening to the same program."

I think Natal will make for a very good exercise program. (Like EA sports active or wii fit only better, I'll probably buy it for my wife for this very reason) However I don't see all that much potential in its games. I'm not ever sure it would make for a very good DDR because of the 10 ms delay.
The Sony wand thing however looks like it might be good for shooters. (Though probably not much else)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
Tech demos aren't fake. I saw a YT vid at least a year or two back that demoed pertty much the exact same tech from MS. From what I remember it was fairly accurate, and was impressed with the tech. Granted, from what I remember much of it centered around hand gestures ala Minority Report and the index finger as a pointing device similar to the Wiimote.
Point being, it was fairly clean back then. Hence why I'm a little more optimistic.
I'm gonna try to find the vids.
EDIT
And if MS can package this in a 200$ SKU and get serious on software and marketing they might have a little hit on their hands. Not Wii proportions, but I'm just guessing anyway.
They gotta advertise on all the women oriented TV channels and the family channels. Sports Networks.

You know what's better than a wand for shooters? A joystick.

It comes off as nickel and dime, yes. Also a cheap gimmick combining their immitation of a feature I never liked from the Wii (Miis) and a feature I never checked out on the PS3 (Home).
It's unoriginal, stupid, and will most likely be a cumbersome blight on my gaming experience.
Does anyone else think Game Room is kinda dumb and pointless?
It really depends on the price. I think these need to be cheaper than XBLA titles, more in the 80 ~ 200msp impulse buy range for this to fly. People love cheap achievements.

Don't they have to stop calling it the XBOX 360 then?
I mean, if I decided that my viewers were interested in all kinds of extreme physical achievements and thus was about to add ballet, gymnastics and figure skating to my competition, I think I'd have to stop calling it the X games.

The arcade room has pretty much nothing to do with Home outside of featuring a virtual space plus some virtual people in it. The entire business model and the whole point of it are completely different.
It would be kind of nice if they weren't charging more money than those ancient games are worth.
Sony - and this isn't a fanboy thing - is just trying to copy the Wii. Its a wii-mote. Slightly more advanced.
Microsoft is actually trying something different, and if it's pulled off, it's amazing. Why not root for it to succeed?
Are you kidding? Both Sony and Microsoft are copying existing tech. The difference is that Sony's copying something that already works fairly well, whereas Microsoft's copying something that had a lot of inherent flaws and I've seen nothing to indicate they've eliminated them all.
Even if Natal recognised insanely small details (like squeezing your trigger finger to fire or squinting to zoom in), I really don't think it'll be any use outside the same sort of minigames we saw with Eyetoy. Hell, if You're in the Movies was any indication, they'd be lucky to even match Eyetoy's minigames.
It's also a little late for Microsoft to jump on the plastic shit bandwagon, since it appears that people are finally getting pissed off with that crap.
Natal's basically an Eyetoy with an IR camera to help it recognize people better, that's it. Nothing spectacular will come out of it. Sony's basically got a reverse Wii remote, with the IR on the remote and the camera replacing the sensor ba, so it'll be able to mimic the Wii really well.

Shooters could be intersting if it recognizes anything as a gun. I always hated the low weight of plastic guns when playing light-gun shooters. It's also why I like the nerf shell; I can add weight using the laser sight.
Also, the usual wave my wang meme. Skeet skeet skeet.

Great! More plastic peripherals! And of course the Halo plastic gun won't work with the Call of Duty plastic gun, so you'll need at least those 2!

I wanted to use my Taurus .40 Cal PT 101, and a Nerf Sword. The Marauder at that, for Conan games.

Depending on how it looks upon release, I may spring for Natal if it's not too expensive. It does intrigue me...but I'm not fooled by the demo. Molyneax's pedo simulator was more smoke and mirrors over everything, and everything else shown at E3 was basically mini game type stuff.
Sadly it'll do as well as devs make quality stuff for it, and I think we've seen how different dev houses handle making quality stuff for waggle/motion stuff. We'll have Petz Natalz before long.

I'm sure both will be used by third party companies about as well as the motion sensor in the Dualshock 3 has been used. :P
For anyone who is still keeping score, here's how my games are doing.
=First 6 days of January=
Epiphany - 15/41
Molly - 17/92
=Life to Date=
Epiphany in Spaaace! - 523/3006 (17.4%)
Molly the Were-Zompire - 372/3742 (9.94%)
Looks like I'll be getting about $600 sometime soon for last quarter's sales.
My next game is going to be an Interactive Novel with a little RPG stats/combat for variety. Horror game where you have to play multiple times to uncover what's going on. I'm working with a talented artist on this one (previous games were just me & my wife) so hopefully that'll help give it a lot more exposure than my previous games.

Typical Molyneux demo really. I bet he's excited to bring back his "innovative" gesture system, he loved that thing.

Knowing me, I'll pick up Natal and Swaggle. I can't stand the idea of not being able to play a game, even if it is only one game. I want my lighsber dual game, damn it.
Again, I can cherry pick sales on games for each platform to show that nothing sales for that system.
Or we could just go back to Lawndart's argument and say that only shovelware sales on the Wii. Publishers just need to learn how to be more like Ubisoft and stop letting a bunch of small second rate publishers out sale them with their storybooks and party game knockoffs.
Except that's never, ever been my argument.
I'd repeat my actual argument, but that hasn't gone over very well, so please feel free to use me as some bullshit strawman.
Was an ad lib I threw in as I was attempting to look for numbers from earlier in the thread. I ran into the marketing argument and it reminded me how we've had a bunch of arguments on marketing this month.
Anyway on Natal. I'll wait and see what comes out for it. I imagine we'll get a bunch of ripoffs on games that have worked for the Wii but we probably won't get much that feels new. If a few games that feel fresh come out for it I might purchase it.
Considering how late it is in this generation's cycle I don't expect much from Natal, nor do I expect much from Sony's attempt.

Molyneux is a fantastic idea man. I really dig his thoughts on gaming, where it should be going, and what innovations would make for some fantastic game designs.
Problem is he's horrible at execution. He ideas are just too big for him to follow through on, so what we get are decent games that have barely a fraction of what his grand scheme was supposed to be.
Milo is at best a Petz game with a young child with creepy undertones. Very creepy.
