Tony Hawk: Ride, has gotten off to a pretty slow start. The game sold a total of 114K units across the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 during the November NPD data period.
Fuck... I can't believe it sold that many...
Like, I was hoping for sub 100k total.
I was honestly expecting half that number. I guess it shows that the TH brand still pushes a few units.
Yeah I guess so.
Anyone remember the numbers for DJ Hero?
I'm curious as to how the $120 non GH/RB compare. And the fact that one game, DJ Hero was good, and Ride was shit.
Interestingly while I was nabbing a copy of the saboteur at lunch this week no less than two mothers picked up a copy of ride and asked the clerk about it. I think it looks fun to parents so a lot of little timmys are going to wake up to a really shitty game under the tree this year.

Six of the top 10 best-selling games of all of 2009 through November play on Nintendo systems. These include Wii Fit at No. 2 with more than 3.5 million sold, Wii Sports Resort at No. 3 with nearly 2.4 million sold, Mario Kart Wii at No. 4 with more than 2.2 million sold, Wii Play™ at No. 5 with more than 2.1 million sold, Pokémon™ Platinum Version at No. 6 with more than 1.9 million sold and New Super Mario Bros. Wii at No. 10 with nearly 1.4 million sold. Consumers have also been enjoying Wii Fit Plus, which has sold more than 1.1 million as of the end of November.

Pfft. It's too early to start talking about best selling games of 2009. Let us have the last month of 2009 and then start talking about best selling games of 2009.
We laugh, but that's $30 million in revenue right there.
Course, it could well be a $50 million loss, too.
13,560,000 for ride
14,760,000 for DJ hero
That totals 28.32 million dollars in retail revenue.
After the retailer and distributors get their cuts, it's probably more like $25 million at best for both titles combined at best.
I'd be surprised if it cost them less than $25 million to develop Tony Hawk Ride alone, for the HD systems and Wii, license Tony Hawk's appearance again, license the music, do the R&D on the board, manufacture and pack the board, and market and advertise this thing.
But it certainly cost them a hell of a lot more than 13.56 million dollars to develop and publish Ride with the R&D and manufacturing costs of the board plus the marketing and ad costs. And that 13.5 mil is only retail revenue.
I know NPDs are the hot topic right now but I just remembered something I heard on the radio when I was coming home from work.
Some car dealership has a promotion where if you act now and buy a new car you get 0% financing and blah blah blah and a free Nintendo Wii console and flat screen teeveeeeeeeee!!!
It made me recall hearing several other deals of this nature over the years - usually car dealerships, furniture stores, or places like ABC Warehouse where if you buy $2000 worth of merch...etc.
I think I remember one for a 360 at some point, but generally it's the Wii. Just makes me marvel even more at how much you come across it in the mass market, and wonder if any of this is pushed by Nintendo or if it's just shrewd dealerships.
PS3 still has another month to outsell Xbox, right?!
RIGHT?!
PS3 4 lyfe, etc. etc. But yeah, I mean, Sony can't do anything else but wait. It might be too hard for them to shake the stigma of "pricey", "no games", and other things that might not be true anymore.
None of the consoles are going to be able to shake their stigmas until the next generation, whenever that is.
Exactly. The status quo will pretty much stick around till the next gen.
At any rate. Wow, how did all the experts guess the PS3 did slightly better? I figured it would too, with all the PS3 promotions... but it didn't. Sony's still got an uphill battle in front of them.
Holy shit that's a lot of Wiis and DSes. The PSP got the least month over month lift of any of them.
Ride did better than we expected, but I'm sure it fell way short of Activision's expectations.
Ride did better than we expected, but I'm sure it fell way short of Activision's expectations.
I don't know. It seems to be fairly in line with a too-expensive sequel to a brand with a recognisable name attached to it. Though, post Christmas and that shit will look like a cliff diver.
Don't we usually have the top 20 by now? Or at least a handful of non top-10 numbers? The Tony Hawk numbers are nice and all, but I'm anxious for more.

Top 20 usually comes Friday afternoon. The non-top 10 leaks are a more recent development but even without him the Monday Gamasutra article typically has a couple.
You know what I realized? Those numbers might be given a minuscule boost by the fact that people had to buy their own copies of Tony Hawk Ride to review.
Here's the official press release from my website.

Don't count Dragon Age out just yet. 362k on 360, and probably at least a semi-decent showing on the PC and hopefully PS3. We won't get any digital distro numbers unfortunately.
362k on 360.. hm. Hopefully it pulls at least 100k on the PS3 and another 100k on the PC. I dunno. I think they'll be okay in the long run.
Based on the number of people playing it just on steam on the release day (around 30-40k), I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the PC version rocked it.
Huh interesting figures. Sony had all the momentum with the Slim and price drop but I guess everyone underestimated how many systems MW2 would sell. Next month should be interesting.
Speaking of MW2, christ that's a lost of sales. It really makes me depressed that Activision's getting all that money and for the videogame industries equivalent of Transformers 2 as well...
Anyway, some replies that I compiled while reading the last 10 pages over the last hour:
Honestly that is a case of people preferring 3D. The PSP titles suck balls but sold a hell of a lot more, why? Because they were 3D semi sequels. This game, with great game play sold ok, but nowhere near the rest of the series since GTA III.
Woah, hold on there. I haven't played the game on either of my handhelds but Rockstar developing a game with above average gameplay? Unheard of sir, unheard of.
Not to harp on this subject for too long but my favorite part of the "Wii can't handle LBP" argument.
The game was initially pitched by Media Molecule to Nintendo, who declined.
Before they went to Sony even.
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea behind the game, I just hate the execution.
I keep hearing about this and yet I've never seen a good source for that rumour. Hell, this is what LBP looked like when they first met with Sony. Phil Harrison was apparently the one that suggested they add the online features.
Wow - I don't know what was expected, but I'm worried those Dragon Age numbers are low.
I wouldn't really be that worried. By all reports, EA are pretty happy with its sales and its DLC has been doing well. I'm guessing it'll do a lot better in Europe than the US as well, based off the large PC market there.
According to the NPD overall sales fell 7.6 per cent compared to those recorded in November 2008. Year to date though the industry is up 7 per cent over 2007.
"The industry declined 7.6% versus last November, but still produced enough revenue to make this month the second-best November in industry history. YTD the industry is still up 7% over 2007. I think we all have to realize the incredible year that was 2008," explained NPD analyst Anita Frazier.
"Based on seasonality the industry looks like it will reach $20B for the year, which means December would have to be up over last year by 11 per cent. Impossible? I don't think so. More positive economic news combined with 'frugal fatigue' could positively impact industry sales during these last weeks of the holiday season. Breaking even seems more out of reach. In order to break even to last year, December sales would have to be up 36% over December 2008.
"There was even heavier promotional activity this year than normal, and while they seem to have benefitted hardware sales, they don't appear to have positively impacted software sales since unit sales of software are down even more than dollar sales are for that category."
That's weird. Ubi said something about being pleased with Rabbids Go Home's initial sales. Huh. At the conference call they said that ""Rabbids Go Home is taking off."
And so Reflex is somewhere between 70k and 90k. That's pretty much what I was expecting.
I saw a demo of TH Ride set up at fry's the other day. A couple walked by and wanted to try it. The guy gets on first, has no idea how it works. Assumes that it is supposed to recognize his moves and replicate them in-game. A reasonable assumption, right? So his game character comes up to a ledge or something and he wants to make his guy jump with the board. So what does he do? He jumps up off the board and lands back on it, nearly falling over in the process, and making the loudest thwacking noise you'd ever hear from his weight slamming back down on the thing. Surprisingly it didn't break. His girlfriend gets on and attempts the exact same thing several times in a row. The game does not recognize this leaping and landing on the board (because you're supposed to 'ollie' by simply tilting back on it), but hey, how are they supposed to know. After a few loud ear piercing thwacking sounds they give up and leave.
Another guy comes up and observes the board. Looking at it, trying to figure it out. He picks it up and attempts to guide the onscreen skater by manipulating the board with his hands. Then he kind of feels the surface of it and sets it down... looks at it for a minute... and leaves.
I got some good lols out of this. Not at these people, but I mean at the fact that even the bare basics of this thing are not intuitive.
I still wonder where GoW Collection is in all this rabble since it hasn't been mentioned yet.
I kinda hope Rabbids Go Home takes off too because, while I don't have a Wii, I've seen a lot for it (a lot of damn commercials) and it looks really charming and fun. Especially the stuff the showed off at E3 if that's still in. It just looks like a good silly game and definitely one I'd pick up.

But I thought the economy hath doomed the game industry?!!???!!!

Ahh.
Well, we have two games. Both are attached to existing franchises. Both are $120 with peripherals.
One is good and one is shit.
And they end up selling about the same.
