So I shouldn't be afraid of spending money on Hard mode? Resident Evil had me hoarding cash because you never knew when you would need it. That game you couldn't buy ammo so in this one I am almost afraid too.
(I just beat RE4 after playing it for about 5 years so after just coming off that game in the past few weeks I have been brainwashed into thinking all games are like that now)
And I should upgrade my rig? I have a level 2 one now. If I get a new suit later on does it cancel out all the upgrades that I made to the previous level?
Your upgrades are carried over to new suits.
Spend money as you see fit really. If you need some ammo buy some and if you have the cash buy an extra power node every so often. Also sell air cans because everytime you need air there will be a refill station anyway. Like people have said too, make sure to always have one power node unspent, as the doors you open will contain stuff that is worth more than the 10k of the node.
Is there a way to get the PC version to allow you to use the mouse when interacting with the inventory or letting me use the wheel to select weapons quicker than having to push a number?

I'd invest power nodes in increased health to begin with, the larger necromorphs will butcher you later on if you don't.
Like someone said earlier, always keep a spare power node on you to open locked doors, it's a worthwhile investment.
So I picked this up in the steam sale and enjoyed the hell out of it. Great atmosphere and gameplay, but I didn't find it nearly as scary as many seem to have. The first chapter or two were pretty scary, when ammo and other resources were scarce, but before long I felt like a badass who could cut apart anything. Nothing wrong with that, but feeling like a badass isn't scary.
Some complaints:
The atmospheric sounds in the game never amounted to anything. The first time I heard what sounded like something running along a catwalk above me, I though "oh shit oh shit oh shit". But there never was anything on a catwalk above me, it was just a sound effect. Before long I realized that that particular sound actually meant that the area I was in was completely safe. Would've been nice if they had mixed it up a bit.
The story didn't make any goddamn sense. After playing through, I was confused about some things, so went to the internet to get the bits of story that I missed. Turns out I was confused because it's retarded. The irritating part is that many of the story problems could've been fixed easily, but weren't.
All in all, fun game. I don't mind the second one having a larger combat emphasis, since the first was already too combat heavy to be considered horror (imo). The fighting was the best part, surgery-combat is fun as hell.
Try playing it on hard or impossible. I guarantee you will find it more intense.
Playing impossible practically shifts the genre of the game, it goes from being an action game with some light survival horror elements to a full on survival horror game with crazy resource management.

impossible hasnt been very hard at all so far. im doing a plasma cutter only impossible playthrough for the trophies, and its pretty much like hard was. im only up through the hydroponics level though, so maybe they drop the hammer later on. but by then my stuff will be all upgraded, so presumably it will balance out.
but its fun. tense atmosphere, even once youve played through a couple times.
nah, those DLC things didnt seem worth paying for at all to me. just using the plasma cutter is helping a lot as far as ammo on impossible i think, because ive got ammo all over the place for this thing. also not having to buy ammo/weapons frees up a lot of extra $$ for upgrades.
I've had Dead Space for a while, but only just finished it. It was really good, but there were times where I was annoyed at the very slow turn speed. I can see the reasons for it, but I would have liked it to be a little faster while moving. It was okay when standing still.
It's very weird how much better turning off v-sync made everything. I can somewhat understand the mouse stuff, but when I played it months ago I had very long load times. When I played it today I turned off v-sync and all the load screens were instant. I didn't even get to see the chapter titles when the new chapters started.

Is there a difference in turn speed between PC and 360? I'm on the 360 and when standing still it can be a bit slow but if I run I find I can turn as sharply as I need.
Just finished my second playthrough in a while and I really can't wait for a sequel. Hope the Alien > Aliens thing happens because near the end of the game when it was getting quite actioney it always great fun.
Is there any difference in the asteroid defence section between hard and normal because I was miles away from the achievement on hard.

I've beaten the game on Hard on both the 360 and PC. Now, I played it for the 360 first, which may be a good reason why I didn't die much when I played it again on the PC, but I found it significantly easier on the PC with KBAM. Every once in a while I see people pop up and complain about turning speed and lack of sensitivity, and other than the obvious advice which I made sure to include in the thread title, all I can offer is this:
-Turn the mouse sensitivity up. I have it at 7 I think. Any higher and it gets hard to control the camera. Any lower and Isaac does aim a bit too slowly for my tastes. Experiment as you please.
-When you are not aiming, the camera swivels around at a decent rate. Isaac always moves relative where the camera is facing, so turning really shouldn't be an issue that I can see. Swivel the camera and when you aim Isaac will instantly snap to face that direction.
-There is no quick turn. Now, you can approximate it by doing what I said above. You can also run in any direction at any time (including backwards), so it is not as vitally important as you'd think at first.
I think, first and foremost, some players get this idea that the game should play like Gears of War and that Isaac should be hyper-responsive like in an FPS. I suppose if you feel that way then the game is going to be a bastard to control - there are posts here and there on the internet where people are downloading mods, adjusting .ini files, and manipulating video card settings just to approximate something that the game was very likely not intended to be like. If that's your deal, then whatever - you have it on the PC so it is your prerogative to change what doesn't suit you.
I think Isaac is about the most mobile third-person survival horror character I can think of. If you want to see movement done wrong in a modern game, check out RE5 on the PC and get back to me.

The max turn speed in a console game is always going to be gimped vs a mouse because you only have so much precision with those little joysticks; PC gamers are used to being able to turn 360 degrees with little trouble and 180 degrees without even thinking about it, which are impossible and very annoying on a console respectively. If you set your XBOX controller sensitivity high enough to flip a quick 180, you'll barely be able to aim with anything other than teeny baby movements.
Is there any difference in the asteroid defence section between hard and normal because I was miles away from the achievement on hard.
i think its the same on any difficulty. just save a file there and come back later, because it will probably take you some serious replaying to get that achievement. took me like 15 tries or some shit.
Well, this is unfortunate. I get to the final chapter,
pushing the red marker through the facility in the planet colony
...and the game crashes just before what I believe to be the final gate before the real endgame begins. Every time I go back there it crashes again in exactly the same place. There's an odd sound glitch too, that suggests my save file is perhaps corrupted in some way. That or it's my install of the game. Either way, I guess I'd have to go through the whole thing again in order to get back to where I was, with no real guarantees I won't encounter the same problem...
I think my space-zombie dismembering adventure is at an end.
It was pretty fun while it lasted though. I got over my quibbles regarding controls to a certain extent, although it had more to do with the necromorphs being far slower than I had expected, and ambushes almost invariably taking place directly in front of you from a standard vent that became very easy to identify a very short time into the game.
...Isn't the standard horror trope supposed to be things sneaking up behind you?
More complicated ambushes and less common but far tougher enemies would have made the whole thing a lot more disturbing, and even more atmospheric. In that respect, I really wish they'd had more zero-g vacuum fighting outside the ship.
Hell, if I had been making this game, I would have either vastly extended or dumped the oxygen meter and set half the game outside and in depressurised areas of the ship. Those were really the only parts of the game I was genuinely disturbed. Absolute silence except from Isaac's boots on the hull, his heartbeat and his heavy breathing, having to spin around every few seconds to make sure nothing horrible had crept out of a hole in the ship - That was awesome.
It's not the vents they come out of that did it for me, it's that sheer number of vents that nothing comes out of.
It's not really a 'win' if every enemy takes you completely by surprise and knocks some health off (that's what we have JRPGS for ), but if a game manages to get you paranoid enough to creep along a hallway, keeping your weapon trained on every vent you come to just in case, then they're selling the mood pretty well.

Yeah, first time I played the game I had Isaac looking down the weapon sights going around every corner, walking through doors, waiting for the lift doors to open and set on every vent I saw. Not to mention periodically looking behind me in case something was coming up behind me. On my second, and especially third, playthrough I run through the entire thing completely gung-ho.
Also think this could be my first game to 1000/1000. The only achievements I don't have are:
Own all weapons, upgrade everything, kill 30 with the flamethrower, kill 30 with the line gun, kill 10 lurker arms, zero-g basketball and finish the game on impossible.
The only ones I'm worried about are the lurker arms (they're accumulative through all playthroughs, right?), impossible difficulty which I may just not be able to do or may get bored having to grind it out and zero-g. I tried ti play zero-g and it made absolutely no sense to me. What are you supposed to do in it?

Ah! I never read the texts because the writing in the logs are so itty bitty. I just assumed it was general 'people are dying!' like I assume every other log is. Welp, guess I'll make sure to scoot up to the TV and actually read it.

How often should I be getting the upgrade module thingies?
I am still early on, only on chapter 2, and they seem to be very very rare.
Early on you won't have much spare cash, you'll pretty much be limited to what upgrade modules you can find. Basic rule is always keep at least one upgrade module on you at all times so that you can spend it on any locked door you come across. After that, store your spare ammo / medkits / stuff and sell it if you feel you're not using it. Save some for the occasional suit upgrades, and maybe for ammo / healthkits if you're really worried you'll run out. The rest pretty much goes to upgrade modules.

The trick to beating the asteroid section is to make a separate save file. Then never try it more than a couple times in a row.
It really isn't THAT hard, it's just very frustrating. And once you're frustrated and tense, you'll never get it.

It's like that deliberately for atmosphere. If you're approaching this game like ME then it is not the game for you, good sir. And I mean that in the most sincere and non-confrontational way possible.

It's a guy wearing an engineering suit designed to help him survive accidents in deep space, using makeshift mining equipment in a bid to survive extremely horrendous odds on a ship that wants to kill him.
It's survival horror with an emphasis on action. Things like Isaac's speed and viewing angle are design decisions to that effect (personally I can't say I had any issues with either. The viewing angle never felt so close in it was restrictive, like more modern console FPS's for example). From an in-universe perspective, that rig must be freaking heavy and your view would be limited wearing that helmet all the time.

Yeah the sequel looks as if it's going to have more of an action bent to it. Although somehow they're still shoving in some of the mining equipment like the plasma cutter.
