Started playing this last night. I woke up at about 3 am and couldn't fall back asleep with my light off. Finally fell back into a snooze at about 4 am, then woke up again at 6 and couldn't fall back asleep... so I played more of the game. I'm only like 2 hours in, but it's amazing. I think the fact that I started off the bat on hard mode really amped up the terror for me.
I like how this thread pops back up from time to time with people's anxiety stories. Just goes to show how good DS is at its job, which is being scary.
The only other game I've ever had to force myself to keep playing out of fear was the first Condemned.

Exactly.
I started locking my bedroom door when going to sleep after playing this game. I still do.
Every so often I think of not doing so, but then I think to myself "What if something tried to open it in the middle of the night?"

I'm on the 12th and presumably final chapter. God damn, this game is so good. Everything Resident Evil 5 should have been (which I still liked). I'll finish it off tomorrow. If I have one complaint it's that the environment seems to have 2 options: tunnel/hall or open area 0g.

In a similar situation:
This is it, I'm finally at chapter 12. I've got to return the marker (which as it turns out is a fucked up human attempt at recreating the original found on earth) and end this whole fucking bloodbath. I'm also pretty sure I'm going to have to square off against the hive mind. Not looking forward to that.....it was bad enough dealing with that mental doctor's creation. Words can't describe my relief when i torched that fucker with the shuttle's engines.
I feel the game was already pretty damn actiony. only thing seperating this from Resident Evil 4/5 action is bad dialogue and cheesy enemies. I think if they amped up exploration a bit, it would do wonders for Dead Space. Going through the game, I took every opportunity to go to a different area than the way that the objective pointer leads, and it was always like a room with 2 or 3 items. I could never really branch out and find a cool little area that wasn't neccesarily something that was relevent to going further through the game.
What I don't want is for them to sacrafice terror. The anticipation that shit is about to go wrong at any second is what makes the game so satisfying. So if by "empowered" they mean that you get stronger weapons and easier ways of dispatching or sensing enemies, then that sucks.

I read through the Dead Space 2 preview in Game Informer last night.
I am simultaneously worried about and excited for the sequel.
For what reasons?
All this talk about changing the pacing of the game and essentially making the player fell more empowered.
Could work, but could also make it too actiony. There is a fine line there.
I've said this before, but I think it's best if we consider that this is going to be a different style of game to Dead Space 1, and likely with less emphasis on the scares, more on the action.

Interesting little snippet, but I wonder how many found it.
Near the end of chapter 11 you're heading back to the hanger via the waiting room, the same one you entered when you first arrived. When you get there, instead of heading straight for the hanger, you can detour a little to head for the very first elevator you encountered (you were running for it when the necromorphs first attacked, and didn't have a weapon). Anyway there's a room en-route to the elevator that was closed off when you first passed it, but now it's open and has goodies in it. I was just wondering whether anyone else went off the beaten path to find that? I was actually anxious about going there when I saw the door was open and I could head back to the elevator, I figured something must be up and was debating whether to go exploring or not.
Also, the elevator's no longer there (it's on the floor below since that's where you took it) so unfortunately you can't explore the rest of the level that you went through in chapter 1.

Fortunately not any that a necromorph could fit through.

they nailed a good balance in the first game imo. I started on hard the first time which really added to the "oh shit, run!" feeling because the monsters killed you quickly. The part that gave me the biggest scare was probably when there was a hallway that at the end led to a zero gravity room which had a ton of guys in it so i was walking back and forth to pick enemies off. Well I got swarmed and ran back into a room i had unlocked with one of those power cells and waited in that room for them to meet at the door. Little did I know, sneaky bastards, there was a vent RIGHT above me in that room which you figure is a safe room (most of them were). So while i'm waiting for the monsters at the door, all of the sudden "RARRR!!!" from the ceiling, lands on me and i die. Needs more of that, not less.

If they have any sense it will be a six foot lance of pure fusion that vaporises anything near it and when it sets them on fire it burns through to the bone in seconds, stunning in the process.
Doesn't make much sense why flamethrowers suddenly lost so much power in the future, they ideally should be as powerful as the above in the future as technology makes the current ones better.
I want to walk into a room like a scene from the thing and FWOOOOSSHHHHHH.
Just make it use tons of ammo to balance it, as long as it works when you want it to.

I like the look of the new suit. I really like the design of the original but the change to a darker sleeker looking suit is pretty interesting, kind of reminds me of the Alien design from the original, I just wonder if Issac is going to get lost in the environment.
I just really hope they fix the PS3 loading times.
I went off the bat on hard, and I probably died at least 25 times through the game, but never in frustrating ways. I think I got more out of the game by doing it that way.

Playing hard was so intense I had to take frequent breaks. I am one of those "could only play for half an hour" guys the devs were talking about. It was just too much and there was no real way to release it all, it was like I had to escape or I'd pop something. If I could have even once smashed a whole corridor of dudes effortlessly and easily I could have kept playing in longer sessions.
So I think what they are doing is great for me, but I hope they don't go overboard and destroy the actually scary parts.
Mind you that hunting monster they are talking about is already giving me the willies.

So is there any trick to enemies like in RE4 where you can stun and kick them? Just shooting the limbs is leaving me ammoless.
Depends on the type of necromorph you're fighting but melee is generally pretty bad, especially on hard mode and especially when you're fighting more than one. You could try using kinesis to throw severed limbs or other sharp nearby objects. Otherwise I just found running away to be a good tactic.
Use stasis when you need to, especially against groups. Stasis has a minor area of effect and can slow down 2-3 of them at once if aimed properly. If they're at the head of a group in a narrow corridor it can also bloke off the rest of them from you temporarily whilst the ones at the front are slowed down.
Using Kinesis to hurl large heavy objects like metal containers can often knock back or knock down the slasher necro's, but that doesn't buy much time. It can be used to help group them together though.
You're often going to be low on ammo, especially early on. Upgrade damage on your preferred weapons when you can. Also, ammo drops are dependent on which weapons you're carrying, so the more weapons you carry, the less ammo of each type you'll be getting. It's usually advisable to carry three main weapons instead of four. This makes upgrading them easier as well if you're just focussing on those three.
If you're running low on ammo, blow one on the legs off if it's a slasher then stasis. If It's a leaper stasis then run to their tails. You can stomp them into oblivion then.
Is this a conserve ammo game like Silent Hill or the first Resident Evils?
Should I be fighting everyone or trying to run away? Do I need to worry if I miss a shot and reload an old save game because every bullet (or whatever the game uses) is precious?
One you get a few chapters in you should be fine. The first couple are slightly harder because you only have the plasma cutter, but ammo becomes more abundant later as well as having the ability to buy it at stores.
Never panic though and just fire wildly, even if you get jumped by a necro. While it's getting up just walk back and take off the limbs.
Also ammo drops for whatever weapons you are holding, so try not to have one weapon that you only use for a certain situation because you will end up just stockpiling ammo while your primary runs dry. Go with 2, or at most 3 weapons you like.

I'd actually say it's useful to keep that "certain situations" weapon around, even aside from the occasions when you really want it it. Presuming you're getting enough ammo for the rest of the weapons you're using, you can sell those stockpiles of other ammo, which you then use to buy nodes to upgrade your weapons.

Make sure you have one weapon for emergencies where you're getting overwhelmed.
The Line Gun is my favourite, but the Force Gun does the job as well.
Like subedii said, don't be sparing with stasis. There are plenty of refill packs around, and there will always be a recharge point nearby if you're going to need it for a puzzle. If you see a recharge point, just go nuts with the stasis.
Early on you might run out of ammo (almost a certainty on Hard/Impossible), so try just taking one limb off and stomping them to death. You'll take damage, but there are health packs around to deal with that, and the limited inventory space you start with means you might end up leaving stuff behind in any case.
For upgrading, focus on damage, and I'm pretty sure that upgrading capacity will max out your ammo for that gun (same as RE4), so try to save it for when you're empty. (This can be really handy early on)
By Chapter 3 you should have enough ammo (and practice) to not have to worry about it too much.
PS. Always make sure you have a spare Power Cell, and use it to open the locked doors. The combined value of the stuff inside is more than the Power Cell costs from the start, and they only get better as you go.
