Hey, Penny Arcaders,

I was wondering if anyone else has / how many other people have played this fantastic multi-genre sci-fi game from the early nineties. It's a fantastic multi-genre sci-fi game from the early nineties with, quite frankly, the best and most in-depth starmap, planet specs. and script (those in an ascending order of depth). I highly suggest everyone use several hours playing it!

It's totally public domain, and can be downloaded for free, very easily on the project's site. Also, I recommend getting the additional voice packages, as the game also has unbelievable voice acting, especially considering the earliness of the game.

Who hasn't played Star Control 2?

This is one of my favorite games, I still play through it every once in a while.

I still dream that one day, something similar to this game will be made in a modern day next-gen engine.

I tried this game without having nostalgia to support it, and I hate to say it didn't really appeal. It is cool when you explore and meet funny aliens and stuff, but the combat is clunky and the endless dot collecting gets really boring.

About sequels from the series, I played through SC3, but was there an actual SC4? I saw previews for it years ago but that was the end of anything I ever found of it.

What? I'm not being left out of this thread.

    A remake might be nice

I don't know about others, but every version I encountered in the 90s came with a cheat/bug (I've never known which) that limited the resource collection a great deal. I still did it some, because once you don't have to anymore [although if you don't do any, the station commander will bitch at you for it; I don't know if that ever has consequences] it gets a great deal easier to do incidentally.

But the resource collection/time curve is the only real complaint I could lay at the game design.

I remember the first time I actually beat this game.

I also remember it was with heavy use of a FAQ because holy shit I never would have figured a large majority of that stuff out on my own.

It was cancelled, but a fair bit of work was done on it. I recall it was fully 3D and seemed like it would play more like a game like Freespace. Really too bad, it looked a lot more promising than SC3.
