I've got an external HDD that appears to be ker-broke. When I turn it on all I hear is a quiet, "click-fssst... click-fssst" I assume that's the sound of the motor not running. Is there anything I can do to recover it? The data on there isn't important enough to spend $TEXAS for, but it's important enough that I would like to have it.

It is making the click of death? You are probably screwed. I have heard of people getting the exact same model drive before and manually replacing the board, which worked in one case I have heard of and not so much in many others. I wouldn't suggest it. I would suggest data backup.
