Like Batman, I Prepared For The Eventuality This Would Digress Into Bad Puns.MOVE ON
The fenced-off area is five times the size of Arkham Asylum. Batman, obviously, doesn’t like it: “He’s been monitoring this place,” said director Sefton Hill. “He’s worried. He thinks it’s a time-bomb waiting to explode into the streets of Gotham.”
Batman’s taken to patrolling AC. The setting is described as “a mix of Tim Burton’s original Batman movie and a touch of Escape from New York,” with spires and graveyards swapped for alleys and streets.
Despite the huge play area, “every nook and cranny has a story.” Also, thanks to distances, Bats will need a way to move around. When asked if vehicles will be included, Warner PR said it’s “something we’ll cover at a later date.”
Wheels or not, Batman can essentially fly this time round. He has a new gadget called a Grapple Boost, which pulls him up and launches him into the air, and can be combined with a new dive which pulls into high-speed, street level flight.
He also now has a second zip line which he can shoot out while using the first: think classic Spider Man.
Hill promised the anti-hero now has new moves for “running across rooftops, blending in, running while grappling, sliding underneath objects” and “jumping between objects.”
Batman can also, “Slide and smash through vents, slide straight into hanging off an edge. You can dive through windows and over railings as well.”
Basic fighting is “the same,” according to OPM, with combinations of punches, kicks and throws. Additions include the ability to throw back projectiles, launch aerial attacks from walls and windows and unleash “beatdown” flurry attacks. He can also backflip and spray explosive gel on the floor before detonating it to stun opponents.
And get this. There’s a not-so-subtle hint that Catwoman is a playable, co-op character. She uses her whip in the mission in the same way Batman uses his zip line. Hill wouldn’t be drawn when asked directly if she was controllable.
“I’m not allowed to comment on that,” he said.
“Forensics” is something Rocksteady wants to push in the sequel, and Batman will be “solving crimes with multiple bits of evidence.” There are loads of side-stories in the game this time, Hill added, although the developer doesn’t “force you to do those. It’s your choice.”
Sharp took credit for getting the Joker situation of the first game under control. He then used that incident to help win the Mayoral election. After winning, he declares Blackgate and Arkham unfit, and buys off a portion of the slums of Gotham. Walling off the area and calling it "Arkham City", he contracts a mercenary group called Tyger into defending the walls. The prisoners are only given one rule: "Don't try to escape", with the penalty for doing so being death. Beyond that, they can do whatever they want within.
-Hugo Strange heads the new Arkham, though it seems like this fact is cloaked in mystery to the outside world. Those who look into him disappear.
-It's been a year. Two face is admitted into Arkham City and he realizes he has to make a move to assert himself in the new prison lest he be eaten alive (not literally, of course). He captures Catwoman, figuring a public execution should do the trick.
-The team is aiming for a highly detailed city, on the level of what they did in the first game with Arkham itself.
-Gadgets can now be used during fights- the article mentions Batman putting explosive gel on the back of one of his opponents during a brawl.
-You can now pull off multiple counterattacks at the same time.
-Many of the super villains have formed gangs, and taken control of different portions of the city.
-The team wants to push the "forensics" angle of the first game more, incorporating puzzles in them that will become more complex as the game goes on.
-Most of the key gadgets that were unlocked late in the first game are available by default (Beyond the explosive gel, the article also mentions the line launcher).
-Interrogations replace the Riddler maps of the first game.
-Batman can now taunt his enemies via a button press.
-Certain characters have optional sidestories within Arkham City (the article mentions Zsasz), that you can dig into.
-Harley has a new costume. From the article: "Instead of a nurse outfit, Harley now wears red and black pants, and a matching midriff-baring top. Her face paint has been scaled back to a much more subtle degree, and she now has a Joker tatoo on one of her hips peeking out over her waistband."
-Batman's been given a new gadget called the "broadcast analyzer". The article mentions several broadcasts Bats can listen in on, like the GCPD dispatch and Gotham FM. The main usage here has Batman tuning in to listen to a message left for him by the Joker.
-Oracle is missing, so Alfred is the one in Bruce's ear (at least at the beginning of the game).
-Rocksteady wouldn't detail their multiplayer plans.
Seems like Two-Face might be in. Those I want you posters kind of suggest it.
EDIT: Beaten
AA end spoilers
Good, I was hoping that the radio call for Twoface at the end of AA was a sign.
I'm also all for a lot more Scarecrow, fuck his nightmares were some of the best parts of AA.
I do wonder what happened to a lot of the inmates at Arkham. Mr. Freeze's cage was empty, Dent's was empty...I assume they escaped, yes?
Yeah, all the villains you don't see at Arkham were out and about roaming Gotham. If you remember at the end, there was an APB for Two Face robbing a bank. So I assume this game will be about Bats trying to clean up in the aftermath of AA. Just don't know how Joker got out so soon. Unless this takes place a few weeks or months later or something.

Well, looking at that banner featured above, I'd wager that...
This follow up will heavily feature Two-Face, as that's him dressed up like a twisted Uncle Sam. Sure you can't see his face, but you can see the stark differences between the left and right sides of his body by looking at his hands and his hat.
I'm fairly cautious about this. As much as I enjoyed Arkham Asylum, yearly sequels are never a good idea. 2 years is a bit more reasonable.
But anyway, these are the things I'd like to see improved upon:
- Get rid of the Venom plot device. It was lame and ruined the end.
- Rework the Scarecrow parts. More sanity effects, less arenas.
- Let me manually aim the grappling hook.
I thought Mark Hamill said that Arkham Asylum was pretty much his last gig as the Joker since its hard on his voice now?
Now my big question is if it will be a next year release or is this a teaser for something a maybe two years away
Well the one thing I did notice about the trailer is that there was no date. The others during the evening all had 2010 with their title card, and Batman didn't give any indication at all.
That being said, I'm really hoping for Mr. Freeze in the next one.
There's a bunch of references in the trailer that someone at GAF caught. The obvious one was Two Face, the other was the Iceberg Lounge (Penguin), The building that the Joker is in says Sionis (Black Mask).

It'll probably be released Summer/Fall 2011.
Ugh, Black Mask is the worst Batman villain. If I were writing this game, I'd just get Catwoman to shoot him (again) in the opening 10 minutes.
Edit: Considering it's not based in Arkham Asylum, I don't really think it'll be named that. I'm going with Batman: Gotham Underground or something.

Another clue that it's Two-Face is the fact that it says "We Want You!" (instead of "I Want You!"), meaning they might use the split-personality version.
In the sequel Rocksteady pulls a Kojima so now you'll be playing as Robin instead of Bats. You'll enter the underground street racing scene to get info out of criminals instead of simply beating it out of them.
Cass Cain should be unlocked once you've finished the game and have the ability to kick everyone's ass in a single hit and say like 5 words in the entire game.

But she's not... Batgirl anymore right? I thought Stephanie Brown was Batgirl now.

Oh I know that but I'm just going to ignore it because she's a terrible Batgirl and her book is horrendous.

Huh, that's a shame. I haven't read it at all but I thought Phil Noto did a nice redesign of the costume for her.
Now the wait begins, I am hoping for something this summer. And I am excited for what is obviously two face as one of the villains, if not THE villain.
I hope the Riddler comes back in a similar role and the riddles are more in depth and go beyond, 'Here's the word I'm emphasizing, find it and hold L1."

Or is this some sort of racial thing?

Tiny things from the trailer:
Black Mask.
That actually kinda seems like the basis for this game. At least from that teaser.
