Everyone and their dog knows that one day we will have an R18+ classification for video games. Even Atkinson.

Definately, and he's actively introducing barriers for them. In South Australia, an idiotic Family First senator has brought in a R rating law for DVDs - any store selling DVDs in South Australia MUST have them all in a seperate section so that children will not be "exposed" to them - despite the fact that covers themselves cannot have objectionable material on them. Fight Club is in the same section as Girls Gone Wild. Further, this law prohibits any advertisement of R rated movies, in catalogues, commercials or even instore displays/posters.

DVD stores have less incentive to stock R rated DVDs - it's become a complete pain in the arse.

This law, heavily supported by Mick Atkinson (he introduced the bill to the house), applies to video games. Even though there is no R rating for games, there is ALREADY a law in place to restrict them, should an R rating come into place.

What scares me is that this could easily spread nation wide - family first senators love this bullshit "protect the children" crap, and liberal AND labor politicians love pleasing family first, as buying their vote is so much easier than buying the greens votes. Note that this bill passed the house unopposed (both labor and liberals voted for it).

    This is pretty simple.

Other than Atkinson and an extremely select minority, western society has deemed much of this material suitable for adults.

Why is that? Because western society values of the concepts of freedom of choice and personal accountability. Western society values diverse opinions and art forms, even if some are confronting to the minority.

This is nothing less than a craven attempt by Atkinson to impose his minority viewpoint on the whole of Australia, cynically abusing the articles of federation in the process. He's flouting natural justice, he's making a mockery of the legislative process as well.

Honestly, he's a disgrace to the legal profession and as an Australian lawyer myself I am ashamed to be lumped in with someone who clearly has no respect for the laws in which he is supposed to respect and uphold both as a practitioner and as an Attorney General.

    SHAME

Apparantly that DVD law was introduced very quietly so it would be too late to oppose it, but I had no idea it applied to games as well, that's just devious.

I would link the interview he had on Good Game, but it really makes my blood boil. Especially when the interviewer brings up a university study which shows that violent games do not make a violent person, he implies that it was paid for by game companies, even doing the 'Fingers rubbing money' motion!

Basically, in trying to be better than the supposed gamers he's fighting, he's become worse than them in the fact that he's supposed to be a respected politician.

    Urg. Grr. Grurgh.

He's reminding me quite a bit of Jack Thompson now, but perhaps a little less crazy and in a country that cares less.

Oh yeah, it boggles the mind that he can get away with comments and actions that we've talked about here. Oh wait, no it doesn't, because the mainstream media don't give two shits about it.

So did the British, so did we. It's kinda a western mindset thing. We're in the era of PC think but it's still in our culture like a damn tick.

You know what? I'm tired of hearing how juvenile gamers are when it comes to these types of threads. It's a suckers argument because it hinges on you not realizing how juvenile the rest of society is, like when a sports team wins and they go on a fucking riot. Or how about soccer fans in other countries that are killing people. But some retard who calls himself a gamer probably gave the most limp wristed threat ever and suddenly we are labeled "the dangerous group" that cannot be trusted with blood in games. It's horse shit, that's what it is. And anyone who is fooled by it is a sucker.

you're dead right, but it doesn't solve the problem

obviously atkinson has been exposed to the worst elements of a large, mostly adult group. but the blame still lies on us, the responsible ones, in a lot of ways - we're not speaking loudly enough in a mature fashion. we're thinking 'i'm better than death threats and unfounded sexual allegations', but we're offering no substitute voice. not enough of us are writing emails that say: 'i truly apologise for other subsets of society that share my interest, but i have to let you know that you're wrong to group us as immature. this is not an issue we're reacting to as a knee-jerk, but something considered, something that we're passionate about, and something that affects both the safety of our children and our freedoms as adults.'

it's not a matter of 'the point's been made before.' i'm sure atkinson has heard words to that exact effect - in fact i've probably sent them to him myself. it's a matter of making that kind of engagement so frequent, so much the norm, that it overtakes the hostility of the juvenile few, so that the people in control start to forget that the group they're dealing with once presented itself mostly as a pack of hateful jerks

edit: anyway submissions to the consultation don't even close until after february. this is the best opportunity to have your voice heard en masse. i can assure you that within the submissions there will be threats of violence and personal insults towards michael atkinson. the bad apples in a good crop, yadda yadda. what we need to make sure is that the vast number of articulate, reasoned responses make those few hateful replies seem insignificant

Sorry to bump an old thread, but now there's an Australian site dedicated to getting people to go against the new rating. It would be hilarious if it turned out Michael Atkinson registered it.

This probably played a bigger part.

Right now it seems like the government's going to delay introducing the legislation until after the election, likely so they can wave about a "mandate" to institute it if they win, and not have to try and woo the Greens or Liberals if they get enough seats.

Man, this election is going to suck. Rudd with his content filter versus Abbott with his... Abbottness.

Holy hell. I mean, I knew Australia lacked a 1st amendment equivalent stopping them from doing that sort of thing, but they seriously tried broad-spectrum political speech censorship? And didn't expect a firestorm?
