New AC:Wii info - Forecast channel used!

edited January 2007 in Games and Technology
A brief chat with a local Nintendo rep led me to some interesting new facts - most notably that Nintendo is hard at work on Animal Crossing for the Wii (no surprise there, but it's good to know it's coming). I didn't get too many details from the guy, but what I can tell you is that it will most definitely be online enabled, just as its DS counterpart was and GameCube counterpart should have been. As far as classic games that were included in the original, no official decision has been made yet as to if they'll be the Wii version. The coolest little bit of info was the fact that the game will actually connect into your Forecast channel so that the game's weather will actually reflect what's going on outside. No release date was specified, but the rep I talked to expected that we should be getting it at some point this year.
tl;dr:

The coolest little bit of info was the fact that the game will actually connect into your Forecast channel so that the game's weather will actually reflect what's going on outside.

The source of the article is http://www.wiicafe.com/ (the second article down, after all the new art + boxart), which used to be Gamecube Cafe. Many of you probably have never even heard of the site, but I've been going there for years and they've never posted any false information. However, they are the first site reporting this, so take that as you will.

Great, so if I ever want to play Animal Crossing it's going to be raining 330 days of the year?

    Northwest Washington sucks for weather.

I play games to escape reality, not to embrace more of it.

You could just change the location on the Weather Channel to, say, California.

I remember playing Ocarina of Time when it came out and seeing the sun set and rise and thinking, it'd be so cool if one day the console could connect to the Internet and your local weather would be reflected in the game.

I've thought this before, but most of my gaming is done at night... so I'd never have any daytime play.

I can't imagine they'd undercut the VC. What they should do is make each system on the VC an item in the game. When you use it, you could select from the VC games you own from that system. Sorta pointless but it's the best they can do really.

If would be nice if you could find a free game download for the VC or earn a few Wii points but I imagine hackers would abuse that too much.

Animal Crossing is perfect for the Wii. Forecast Channel, the message board, Mii's, WiiConnect24, the VC, your friend list, not to mention the actual controller, all can be leveraged in so many fantastic ways. I really nope they make extra-special use of the remote for all the activities.

Theres no way in hell the NES games will show up in this version.

But it might be cool if any VC games you have downloaded could be a furniture item you could put in your house and access the games within AC itself.

Oh man. I think this all but makes certain that the Wii AC will be my entry to the series. This sounds great.

Provided, of course, I switch the weather from the local "rain 24/7, punctuated by spells of rediculous heat" to somewhere where it's often snowing. I <3 snow.

It would be cool if you can set your location to one place at the beginning of the game, and where you are determines if you get some special items and stuff. Like people in Canada might get maple trees, and people in california might get palms.

And by having contact with people all over the world, you are able to build a bigger assortment of rare items.

So is it actually going to have the correct seasons for living in the southern hemisphere? That would be nice for a change.

Although I'm living in an area of drought, so it's never going to rain in my AC town I guess. :?

It hasn't snowed in Reseda, CA since 1989. Yes, I still remember that day. I'm going to have to visit someone's place if I want snow-related merchandise.

Also, there was the rumor that your Miis could be used. Hope it's true, because it would be so awesome. If Nintendo could enable USB Keyboards for it as well (those USB slots have to be used for something someday), I can forsee a great time to be had by most.

This sounds really neat. I'm in Maine so we actually have seasons and such so it will work well for me. I just recently became readdicted to the DS version of AC so I'd definately pick this one up (if I ever see a Wii of course!)

It'll be interesting to see the battle of AC:WII versus MiiSims.

Don't you mean WiiSims? I thought that the Sims game for Wii didn't use Miis; at least, I remember people bitching about it in G&T.

I was that way when I first bought my wife AC:WW, I didn't play it for about a year because it felt like more of the same from the Cube version. Once I picked it back up, it felt fresh again, and I started finding all the neat stuff that was new to the DS version.

They really do need to make sure they add sufficient new things to do, however. Fishing to pay a mortgage gets old.

WW was kinda been there done that. But go back and play the GC animal crossing, and tell me it isn't unbearable. WW is a huge improvement on a bunch of little things that add up to a much improved game. I can't wait for the next true online AC.

I personally think that this whole rumor can't be completely true. The more rainy states will have more chances to catch rare fish, non-snow states can never make snowmen. Things like this make the system not work. And changing your location in the foracast channel everytime you wanted a certain weather would be really really lame.

I live in the 3rd largest town in Montana, and my city isn't even on the list on the Forecast Channel. 3-4 smaller towns are, as well as the 2 larger ones, but they just skipped mine for some reason. I'd have to set the city to a location 90 miles away to get the closest weather in my town.
