Prevailing wisdom about beards is more or less the same: Give it a long, uninterrupted period of growth (usually six weeks, from what I have discerned), before giving it any sort of trim or shaping.
So I guess my advice is as follows: If you want to keep a beard, leave it alone until, say, Valentine's Day or thereabouts. Then shape as you like.
heck man, it doesn't look half bad. If I were you, I'd trim it right up to the jawline, and leave it at that.
It is a good one, I liked it before, but I was like, I can do better! But I tried to do better half asleep with sharper blades. So uh, my plan had a few flaws.
Naporean, my beard can get up to full growth with a quickness. The thing is it is unruly, and has lots of odd patches of color, so just letting it do its own thang for 4 weeks is not a good idea at all. Trust me on this one.

Oh, yeah. Bigtimes reminds me that I forgot to say that it looks just fine as-is.
Can you grow the mustache portion all the way around, or are you thin between the chin and lips?
That is like my achilles facial hair area. It connects, but it is super blonde hair, to the point where I am not entirely unsure that it is crystal clear. The rest is fit for service. I'll take a close up picture in a sec of that stupid 'stache.

If you don't mind my asking, Dyna, how old are you? Because that spot can take a long time to fully develop. I was about 21 before it caught all the way up, but I have some friends that either didn't develop full growth in that spot A) until their mid-20's, or ever.
naporeon, I am 29. I have considered cheating with Just for Men at those two little spots...

A girl that I've talked to online for quite some time says that I can pull off the full beard look best perhaps. Considering our unhealthy fascination with Gordan Freeman I am leaning towards just trimming the rest of my beard down a bit and waiting for it all to grow back out...
Speaking of beardies, and not to hijack, but I was hoping you guys might have some suggestions on getting a decent trimmer(type/brand whatever). My current one is just a straight foil shaver with a crap trimmer built-in. The problem for me is clean shaving tends to cause me in-grown hairs, so I want to trim it short, say slightly longer than a 5 o'clock.
Oh and I have to second the trim to the jaw underneath and go for a regular 'ol beard, I think it would suit you, Dyna.

I just use a basic Philips Norelco T765 or whatever that I got off of Amazon for like 20 bucks. It suits me fine but I have been thinking about upgrading to a fancier solution. But considering the simplicity of my beard style, that isn't really needed.
Dyna, you need some smaller glasses. Those things are portals to another realm.
Man, I have a big face. These work for me. Smaller glasses make me look super retarded. Thank you for the criticism though. I'll consider it when I'm looking at frames next.
I was actually thinking about picking up a smaller indie style pair just for the fuck of it.
Couple of things I would recommend are as follows:
1) Don't have hair on your neck. It looks like you're just lazy, rather than you like a beard. The difference between an upstanding gent and a bum. Get rid of the scruff.
2) If you want to keep your beard at all close, make sure your mustache either covers your upper lip evenly or trim it such that it doesn't really cover it at all.
To control unruliness, you can condition the beard (rinse extremely well) get a very fine tooth comb and blow dry it while combing it.

I shaved up the neck region. I already condition it but I don't do that fancy stuff you suggest. I have heard taht it is very soft, but eh.

Indie glasses, despite being... well, indie glasses do actually look good on some people. I tend to think smaller glasses look better on most people, but I've never worn eyeglasses.

They are the hardest thing to shop for ever. They not only change how your face looks entirely, but they serve a very important function and some frames will hinder that.
If you ever need them, drag a girl or a friend that will be decent enough to give you honest opinions. Never go alone. Ever.
As a beard master, having had multiple beards of my own, you need to let it grow a while longer. And don't use a beard trimmer. Use scissors to trim the hairs that stick out and the rough patches. Beard trimmers lift the hair up and cut it all to a uniform length and that does not look good at all. But know that only 3% of women surveyed actually like beards. It makes it much more difficult to pick up women with one.
Regardless of what you do with a beard, you need a different haircut and smaller glasses.

Re: getting glasses. Always wear contacts, if you can, when you bring a friend to help you look. Bring someone who isn't afraid to say you look like a dumbass, and have them bring a small camera or camera phone to take a few picks of you with each of your top 2 - 3 frames. I have a preference for frameless, because you can use whatever shape lens you want and they blend right into your face.
Silhouettes are crazy light with thin titanium arms and bridge and ultra light plastic. I'm to the point where I can't recognize faces beyond 8 feet without glasses so I love having glasses I can hardly feel on my face. They never slip down but the bridge joints protrude in a bit and I can notice them when I am looking left or right. A small price to pay for comfort though.
Trim it "Freeman" style, also get a big orange suit and crowbar.
Hell yeah!
Though I think the beard is just enough without the suit and crowbar... you might get a few funny looks out on the street crouch-jumping over trash cans and breaking boxes open with a crowbar and trying to "use" various machines that hang on walls...

Here are several eyeglass frame options. One of them is actually a "women's" frame...
Seriously though, all looks good, agree with the hair growing out part. Not long, but longer.

Damn, y'all are helpful. Sorry I didn't like totally get all slobbed out for those initial pics. I've already started trimming farther up on mah neck and using a post shave lotion cream. It seems to be working quite well. If I start getting those evil ingrown hairs I'll have to get back to a 1-blade disposable razor and just look slightly unkempt.
I've got a long weekend so it seemed like the perfect time to...uh...tweak my beard. Now, this initial attempt was made when I was too groggy and well, I didn't have a reference photo to work from. I would be interested in what y'all have to say about my beard and how best to trim it. I will not even consider goatees or straight up mustaches.
Your beard is having a "rounding" effect on an already round face.
If you want to keep the beard, I suggest smaller frames that are blockier and more squared than your current ones. Also, your thinning hair isn't helping out all that much with it's current style. Consider something trimmed closer on the sides to help square out your head a bit more.

I appreciate your advice but I think just dropping a few pounds is the best way to square up my face along with some judicial trimming. I keep my hair cut short as is, like #3 clippers short on the sides. I might be due for another hair cut by now...

Don't buy Weezer glasses, man. They're for douchebags and art students (synonyms?).

I would do that, give the rest time to fill in and get thicker. Then hit it with a beard trimmer now and then to keep it looking uniform and snazzy.
Also grow out the hair on top of your head, for balance. Maybe what you could really use is a new do. That's always fun.

Trim the scruff off your neck.
Get a right angle with the side burn to the beard, that little wing looks scruffy.
To be quite honest, I was pretty impressed as is. Definetly one of the better beards I've seen.
I think it'd also be cool to have a Freeman going on - but you declared no goatees.
