If I'm hitting the Mage Tower next, thoughts on who to side with? I didn't play very far as a mage so all I know of the Circle and Templars is what that origin story tells me. I need to know who's gonna have a better "fuck up the archdemon" factor.
It's a tough call
On one hand if you side with the templars you don't get the best healer and kind of only non-player healer in the game. The mages were kinda cool in the last fight but if there is friendly fire I think they can kill you. I don't know how the Templars are in the last fight.
Actually, that's not quite true.
If you phrase things correctly you can get the Templars and Wynne.
It's something like "We can't risk allowing any Blood Mages to escape."
There's an easier way to have your templar cake and eat the healer Wynne too.
Let the mages die in the final battle in the tower, don't use the scroll.
The circle pretty much dies off then, so you get to keep Wynne.

The way I did it
I said I'd help the mages, told the Templar just as you go in to the final fight that I wouldn't kill all of the mages, then just killed them all anyway. Got a bit of a negative approval from Wynne, but she stayed.
I was going to make a list with links and campaign hours-played averages but you did my work for me, links excluded.
Maybe even a graph.
e: Please, let me know the last good RPG you played that was less than 40 dollars and clocked in at 15 hours. I'd love to know how old it is.
The expansion to oblivion.
The expansions to Fallout 3?
Torchlight was 10$ and I finished up the story part in about 15 hours.
According to this box I'm looking at my dad paid 30$ fort the Baulders Gate 2 expansion.
So, there you go? Although I'm under the idea that a game is a game, and the amount of time you get out of it is the same value even if its not an RPG, so I don't think there is a point for us to argue, since we clearly dont agree.
What did I just say?

All of that is good to know. I've only got one full playthrough under my belt (as a mage). I'll try it a new way!
I would've, but from a gameplay perspective most of them are necessary. I guess I could probably afford to drop Leilana and Sten, but I need Morrigan's damage and Wynne's healing for sure.
From a gameplay perspective, 3 are necessary. The 3 you like to have in your party. I did the whole game with Alistair, Wynne and Leliana, occasionally bringing in Shale to replace Alistair for variety. There's never a point, unless it forces a character on you, where you must have a different character. There's always a way to do things with the ones you have.
From a story perspective, up to 5 are necessary.
Your 3 and if they aren't included, Mr I-don't-want-to-be-king Alistair and Knock-me-up Morrigan.
edit
Regarding the returning companion - isn't it possible it's whoever you chose for your main romance option?
Doubtfull considering the production costs of creating 3-4 different char's and voice actors compared to say, bringing one guy *cough* Oghren, back.

Aaaand there we go. 0:37 in the trailer - main character kneeling to talk to someone lying on the ground, 3 companions. One of them a dwarf warrior, glowing red from berzerker, with a double handed axe on his back. Oghren.
edit and at 1:19, a dwarf with red hair and a double handed axe backing away from an enemy. It's Oghren.

I couldn't listen to the trailer because I'm at work, but I could view it.
Looking at the trailer and that particular scene, I'd guess that we were seeing Oghren, Alistair (the knight) and Zevran (the rogue). The mage could be the player warden, or completely new character. From the back, it's build looks more like an elf than a human.
It might be easier to surmise who wouldn't be returning. My thoughts as follows:
Morrigan because she leaves the party in any ending, though the circumstances are different.
Sten because he returns to his homeland if you find his sword.
Zevran I thought would not return, I thought one of his endings had him returning to Antiva to become the leader of the Crows.
Of course we may be getting an inacurate look at what represents the sum of the returning party members. There could be some others left at camp you're just not seeing.
I'm just curious which ending they're deciding to use as canon.
Ending spoilers.
I hope that the canon ending isn't "Your Warden is dead," - I would have seriously figured that they'd go with the "Dark Promise," as it has much more storytelling potential.

I was just going by the official information - one returning companion. The red haired, two handed weapon using berzerker dwarf pretty much singles out Oghren. Alistair...
being king now
Kind of takes him out of the returning character selection.
And since they let you import a saved character...
The expansion has been long awaited by myself and my sure many others. But they could have done so much more with the Soldiers Peak, denying access to the tower after finishing it, left a bad taste in my mouth.
Hopefully this one will make want to start a new character, I have already finished three times, really funnn!!!

Ah I didn't realize there was already official info out. Hadn't seen it yet myself. I guess it would make sense that Oghren returns, but I am a bit sad that some other characters didn't make the cut.
WHY DID YOU LEAVE ME LELIANA!? WHYYYYYYYYY!!!!
Not sure why they wouldn't throw Dog in as he's probably the most popular under-used character ever.

Hey, I'm just as pissed about
Leliana, especially since my characters ending paragraph said her and Leliana went off together to investigate the new darkspawn threat. Unless they do an ME2 and have your romance option sitting in your Warden castle and just not available as a companion.

Are you guys talking about the Return to Ostagar or the expansion expansion which was rumoured to be in existance like yesterday? If it is the expansion importing your character sounds pretty great.
I better get the respect a living paragon deserves!

One of the Dev's on the DA forums said the following:
* Choices in Origins definitely are recognized in the expansion.
* You do import all of your gear from Origins, but not from the chest in Soldier's Peak. But you can always pull out what you like, save, then import that save.
* You can't play an Orlesian Grey Warden in Origins.
* Amaranthine is indeed the coastal arling that once belonged to Rendon Howe. And, of course, everyone will speak with a Jamaican accent. OK, maybe that last part isn't true.

edit - above post destroyed my speculation. Guess they created lots of content to cover the different endings. Though there's a few that would require you to make a new character.
I wish the new origin worked in the old campaign though. That would have been badass.

According to point one, since you can pull something out of your chest, save, then import, you can import a non-beat save. I wonder how that would work as far as choices, since you wouldn't have made some crucial ones yet.

With your save game at the endgame 'hall', if you survive, it says you can still go and do DLC that wasn't released before you beat the game. Is there a way to go visit somewhere you have done? I haven't really tried.

I'm pretty sure what he means is "you can load a safe, access your stash and take out the stuff you want and then beat the game". Or maybe not. Maybe the end game doesn't matter. What matters is how many chicks I can bone in this.
Kind of odd too that they don't let you import the stuff in your chest. You'd think they'd want you to be able to use that and then advertise that so everyone would go and buy Warden's Keep in order to have that space and items for the expansion. Then again, I guess might be hard to balance for you bringing in multiple sets of armor and things.

I first interpreted that I could load up that save and do DLC, but I really don't think you can. I couldn't figure it out, and rereading it, it just seems to be just saying you should load up a pre-ending save and do the DLC on that.
Also, I wonder what ending the expansion will think I got, since:
The hall itself played out like I should. I made Alistair king, but he then took the final blow, so I was living, and I didn't take the deal with Morrigan. The epilogue, however, talked about Alistair and Anora being king and queen together for some reason, despite him being dead, and mentioned Morrigan being seen with child that's possibly mine (not sure if this is always there though)

I would just like to have someplace where you can fight to gain experience, like make a new Proving that's always open and always has something available.
It's always in JRPGS, the "Colosseum" stage, it's worth having here too (was there something like that KotoR and Mass Effect? I can't remember).

You got a bugged out epilogue., sorry.
Any idea what those two things are supposed to say, then, or does someone have links to the epilogue texts?

Good. I wanted half-pint Spike Speagle to be with me in the end.
They could be doing the Mass Effect 2 thing. Some companions (love interests, Dog) will be in your 'base' and not usable as companions.
It was suppose to come out today , but got delayed :?
Total Price will prolly be around US$60 with the new expansion DLC.
And if it's the same quality as the main game and DLC has been, I'll gladly pay it.
