Windows Rape

So my eMachine with XP seems to have gotten the virus of a lifetime.

I get back from dinner and I have a fake looking windows defender-esq logo in my task bar saying that my computer has been infected and windows is downloading the appropriate software (yeah right).

I right click to see what the hell this thing is calling it self and my computer shuts down.

Re-booting won't work and Windows refuses to start successfully even in safe mode.

Anything I can do here except nuke it from orbit?

Most likely you will have to reformat the computer if system restore doesn't work.

I had to do that plenty of times with my computer and for less serious viruses.

If you don't already have one, you should get a backup drive in case of certain situations, like the one you have now.

I also suggest getting a better anti-virus. I use Norton, but its not popular with many people. I been fine with it though.

If that live CD doesn't work, you can also try SystemRescueCd. It's a pretty good tool for this sort of thing. As for anti-virus, Microsoft Security Essentials is fantastic, and I have only heard good things about it.

Save the documents you need and do a full format and OS install. That particular trojan/virus/whatever will even rename anti-virus programs so you can't run them. It's a heinous little fucker.

    Seriously. Nuke from orbit.

    It was the only way.

Luckily this computer is just a spare machine that I keep around. My entire plan for it this winter was to allow me to use IE for job application sites

Why does the nuke photo look like Miley Cyrus?

Also, the best thing to do is use a Linux Unbuntu CD get what you need and then destroy the old OS.

Have you ever listened to a Miley Cyrus song? in terms of making your life end, they're the same.

Why would a grown man be able to identify Miley Cyrus from a singular picture where her name wasn't in the jpg?

Maybe the big rainbow letters down the side which clearly spell out: "Miley Cyrus."

    Just maybe.

    look again.

Doh.... Well I am a grown man, I shouldn't be expected to spend much time looking at an underage pop star and reading big neon lettering.

I should change the title of this tread to

What the hell do I do with a freshly restored eMachine with a FX 5200, AthalonXP 2800, and 512mb Ram?

Download Microsoft Security Essentials is what. Also, for future note, if it's not gotten a terribly good hold yet, Avast/MSE in safemode and Counterspy afterwards has a pretty fair success rate with these type of infections.

Along with MSE, I'd recommend downloading something along the lines of ccleaner(url=http://download.com/) + search) to regularly clear temp files, as that's where it will sit a lot of times before it becomes active.
