yeah, to be honest I'm not even getting hyped for FFXIV because I know it's going to take them like a year after release to fix all the bugs and exploits that would cause me to immediately quit.
PC version hitting European shelves on September 22nd; PS3 SKU arriving March 2011
Square Enix has announced that the PC Collector’s Edition version of MMO Final Fantasy XIV will be released in Europe on September 22nd. The standard SKU will hit retail on September 30th.
The PS3 version of the game will not be released until March 2011, with pricing to be announced at a later date.
The PC Collector’s Edition includes a behind-the-scenes DVD, a special branded security token, a FFXIV branded tumbler, map, a travel journal including concept art, the Onion Helm in-game item, a 30-day free trial period for the game and a pass that allows a guest to play for free for a limited time.
The monthly subscription fee will be £8.99 (€12.99) with additional characters available for £2.10 (€3.00) a month. A maximum of eight characters can be registered on any one account.
Each account is eligible for one free retainer (a non-playable character that maintains item sales and storage when users are logged out) with each additional retainer costing £0.70 (€1.00).
A beta version of the PC game will go live some time in early July. It will become available to pre-order with key retailers at some point today. Those who pre-order will receive another in-game freebie – a pair of Garlond Goggles that increases the speed at which characters progress.
Those who register their FFXIII Campaign Codes will receive the Asuran Armguards DLC, an extra that improves the effectiveness of tools.
“This September, players around the world will join together to explore the fascinating and exciting realm of Eorzea,” the game’s executive producer Hiromichi Tanaka stated.
“We’re presenting players with a new style of online gameplay, that we know will please avid fans of online games, but welcome more casual gamers as well with the variety of gameplay and story-driven content.”
The specs for the PC version are as follows: Windows XP/Vista/7, Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz or AMD Athlon X2 2GHz, 2GB of RAM, 15GB HDD space, NVIDIA GeForce 9600 512MB or ATI Radeon HD 2900 512MB and DirectX 9.
Could've sworn they said that it'd release on PS3 and PC at the same time. This disappoints me. I want the PS3 version so I can play it in my bed. I always liked playing FFXI on my PS2.
Heh, they did the same thing with XI in the US. It came out on the PC many months earlier than the PS2 (Nov iirc on the PC, March on the PS2); so this isn't terribly surprising.
Seeing as how I was going to get it on the PC anyway this doesn't bug me at all. :P
Personally I'm real surprised that the PC version is hitting September, after all the speculation over the vague 2010 date. PS3 version being delayed does indeed suck, but I hadn't decided which console I was going to get this for anyway.
Looks like I'm all in for PC. I hope pricing details (subscription) are revealed soon.
Incidentally, I have it on good authority that the PC version is 100% compatible with both the 360 controller and headset, and even figures configurations for both. Can't wait.

From the last report I read, 14 won't be coming to the 360 anytime soon. They seem to still be having negotiation issues with the whole Live service thing.
Son of a bitch, I was really planning on playing this on my PS3, now I just don't know...
Edit: Also, I really hope my current GPU will work, GeForce 8800 GS. Works on just about everything else, but I know that those bastards were finicky as hell when it came to XI. They just simply didn't accept certain cards even if they were better or a decent alternative to their recommends.

I know, I was referring to the fact that for those who prefer controllers, the PC version will be just as accessible.
I'm not sure how the headset will work, though, as the best I've managed was to have my voice transmit through it, but I can't receive people's voices except through speakers.
I have a friend who just sent all his gear to me on FFXI since he was looking forward to a Holiday Launch of FFXIV (PS3). Looks like I'll need to help him find a deal on a PC if he really wants to play it this year..
I for one will be getting the PC version then later switching to Ps3 Im sure. There's no way I'm gonna let people get a 6 month advantage if the economy is anything like XI's was.

Must spring for that collector's edition.

...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.

I prefer playing on keyboards, but if I didn't, I'd still pick the PC version over the PS3 if only because I could use the 360 controller.
That thing is controller perfection, except for the terrible D-pad.
I'm curious if the release date has anything to do with WoW's closed beta announcement. The last two lasted around three months or so. At least FF14 will have a month or two before Cata releases.
After the WAR fiasco no one should release BEFORE a WoW expansion intentionally. 4 or 5 months after would be far better.

I think that had more to do with WAR being a boring game.
While the game wasn't totally polished on release, it's struggles had more to do with it being PvP oriented and spread over 20+ odd servers and then something like 2/3s of its player-base suddenly disappearing to go level in WoW.
MMOs that feel empty near launch are basically dead MMOs. They could have salvaged it by handling the server situation better, but given the ponderous, glacially slow reaction time of the XI devs, do you really think they would do better?

No, but I think there is far less audience crossover with wow/ffxi(v) than there was with wow/war, since war was just like a pvp focused wow and was clearly trying to snag people who were already playing wow.
Preordered the collector's edition despite some reservations about it launching this early. I'd actually prefer if the game was delayed and polished up some more.

fixed that for you
Naw. I think I'll be getting in day 1.
I got a link to this in the mail from amazon today.
The PS3 version says March 31 2011
The PC version says Sept 23 2010.
They're just pulling these dates out of their ass.
Origin: Galedrid - Nintendo: Galedrid/3222-6858-1045
Blizzard: Galedrid#1367 - FFXIV: Galedrid Kingshand
That was sort of my assumption as well, but hey, at least it's conjecture based in something?

they can get some polish on the game first this way
Then again it might be smart for them to just delay the PC release too, so they don't get crushed when the Cataclysm train rolls through

O well, I went ahead and ordered the Collector's.
So preordered.

September 30th for PC and March 2011 for PS3? I don't know about the PS3 date so it makes this article a little iffy.
edit: I guess the PS3 is legit. Why the European release date 8 days ahead of the world-wide release
Yeah, that isn't too bad at all. This really sucks for my JP friends though...a lot of them are waiting for the PS3 version.
