Looking at their pricing, I guess they really feel like you could get away with only one main character if they're going to charge you an additional $3 per character beyond the first. I can't imagine having 2 or 3 characters on different servers and paying an extra $10 a month for access to all of them.
And that release date isn't really a death knell, but it will affect the player base. FF and WoW don't have much in common besides being in the fantasy genre, and while XIV is likely to have it's hardcore XI players signed up, I'm sure they'll initially have a bunch of subs from people wanting to check it out because they're tired of WoW. But once Cataclysm is on the shelves, you can bet the player numbers will drop. By the time the PS3 version releases is when you should see the player base stabilized. But then there's the Star Wars MMO...
Well, since you can be any given class on any given day, there is really only need for one character. This is doubly true since it seems we will have our own auction house mules.

Having a dedicated mule/auction character in FFXIV might help if they can carry more items, but in both cases they're still charging extra for more characters while avoiding the real solution of simply making inventory space unlimited.
What the hell Square? You said you were going to do a multilaunch. Urgh. It's FFXI all over again.
look on the bright side, at least the Japanese players won't all be able to get their crafting to 100 for next to no cost through exploiting before the US release. Oh and of course they would fix the exploit right before the US release.
Have they even released all the job information yet? Last I saw there were still 3-4 missing.

2 things! First of all, some of you better be starting early so we can get our server figured out.
Second of all... The Garlond Goggles are listed as "Standard Edition Pre-Order".... but they seem better than the Onion Helm. So do ya think Collector's Edition people will be able to get the Garlond Goggles as well? If not that just seems.... silly.

I have to say I'm surprised at the release date (for PC anyway). I was guessing sometime after Thanksgiving at the earliest. What a huge kick to the groin for PS3 people though. I honestly feel for you.
I assume the the specs they listed are the minimum. Anyone seen any recommended specs? CE looks nice, might have to grab that.
I think it's funny that they basically just took all the races from FF11 and renamed them. Some with slight visual differences, of course.
About the chosen release date: Judging by FF11 and 14 being quite similar to it -- I would say there isn't going to be a ton of overlap with the WoW playerbase. At least not the casual gimme-gimme crowd they cater to in WoW these days. I still think they stand to take a chunk out of the WoW subscription base if for no other reason than WoW has been around for 5+ years now and people are getting tired of it. (I for one have gotten sick of the game requiring little effort, and don't plan to get Cataclysm) It could also benefit from being the only MMO released on current "next gen" hardware so far. And of course, has the FF name going for it.
Question: Are the servers mixed JP/NA again? And anyone know if we will be able to use the IME to chat in-game with the NA client, or are they going to be retarded and make me use the Japanese Playonline client still?

No chance in hell. I will eat a large hat if FF14 at any point breaks a million subs.
No chance in hell. I will eat a large hat if FF14 at any point breaks a million subs.
I'm not saying it will have 10million subscribers, but I don't think breaking 1million worldwide subscribers would be unheard of for it. FF11 was at like 900k back in the day at it's peak. Although they are kinda shooting themselves in the foot on the PC with it having such high requirements.
A lot more people have PCs these days, and online multiplayer is hugely more popular today.
More importantly: Female gamers online and %makeup in MMOs is much higher than years ago. I could see a more social and laid back immersive game like FF14 being a good draw there.
are they selecting a limited number for the beta or if you sign up for it you pretty much get in?
Yea it's sounding like ffXI all over again, I know the pc controllers were the worst and I couldn't change them(or figure out how) in XI so I hope they fix that.

Not sure but the previous issue they had before was licensing from what I've read.
Licensing for what? Using the IME? The IME works in basically any other app in Windows I've tried it with. Is it because POL was basically a replacement shell you couldn't tab out of?
It was a serious boon to getting groups in FF11 (At least in the first 1-2 years after NA release). Since the JP players were anal about not grouping with NA players a lot of the time. I heard they thought most NA players were bad. (Can't say I entirely disagreed there) So it was funny how having the LFG message be in both kanji and English would get me nice JP XP groups (And they didn't visibly care once they saw I knew what I was doing anyways)

edit: Found it
The PS3 is fully Unicode compliant and as such there is no need to worry about PS3 incompatibilities. Furthermore, the PS3 includes its own IME and supports Japanese input by default. The only reason players won't be able to input in Japanese is if SE intentionally attempts to lock it out during play of FFXIV. As for the PC version, since the PS3 version will be Unicode, I imagine the PC version will be as well; therefore, there will be no problem letting windows pass IME input into it as there was in the PC version of FFXI.
All versions of FFXI included the ATOK Japanese IME regardless of region; however, due to licensing costs, JustSystems forced them to either lock it out entirely for non-Japanese locales, or give them a percentage of the profit in non-Japanese regions.
Put simply, it is obvious that SE made a business decision by locking out the IME in those regions instead of removing it entirely from the game as that would have been more trouble than it was worth when the reason was simply to prevent them from incurring licensing fees to be paid to JustSystems for American and European clients to input Japanese (that they in 99% of the cases, did not require).
Yeah, I'm still on FFXI now, and some people are still like that but I've made a lot of friends from Japan and Thailand that I've had no problem communicating with.

FF11 peaked at 550k, a large chunk of those subs being in Japan, where it's still the number 1 mmo unless you start counting monster hunter (to my knowledge). Breaking a million subs actually would be unheard of as to date the only ones to do so are WoW, the 2 lineages, and runescape. My analysis of the situation is that 3 months after release 14 will be a 250k sub "flop" like most of the mmo's to come out since WoW. I've seen nothing to indicate this game will be casual friendly enough to make any serious headway in the U.S. Further, there is actually a lot of bad karma directed at SE because of how god damn soul crushing 11 was, which is extremely bad press for SE. Not only that, but the pushed back release of the ps3 launch will further hurt sales, as it was my understanding the majority of Japanese players were on PS2. And lastly, at the time FF11 launched, the available online gaming in Japan was fairly anemic. FF11 or Phantasy star, take your pick. That is not the case so much anymore.

I played with quite a few JP groups due to playing during their peak. A couple of times at least one spoke english well enough to converse, and pretty much confirmed what you heard. Most JP players were simply a year of experience ahead of the NA players when they joined, and so the NA players got a bad reputation that they never really lost. (Or at least not before I quit.) But once they saw that you weren't incompetent, they generally warmed up to you.
But even with all that, one of my favorite parts about FFXI was the international aspect of the servers.

Yeah, I think the PS3 release being pushed back is really going to hurt the sales in Japan. A large number of Japanese Players I know, all use the PS2 to play FFXI and are waiting on the PS3 version.
But once they saw that you weren't incompetent, they generally warmed up to you.

I had a double stigma as well -- I was a Dark Knight First/easiest Adv profession to unlock, so you had a ton of bad ones running around. I went Mithra DRK/WAR though, and kept my Scythe/Great Sword and Dark magic all maxed out. Generally you found DRKs only had Scythe, and almost never kept their dark magic up.
I don't really get how the delay would hurt sales. Defer sales, sure. Hurt sales? Nah.
Sure it's going to be slow in Japan until it's out on the PS3 but if someone was going to buy it on the PS3 someone is going to buy it on the PS3; even if it is a few months late.
It'll still sell better on the PC probably in western markets. At the very least in the US.
I imagine it'll sell well initially but won't keep a gigantic subscriber base unless it is a lot more accessible than XI. And while it appears to be; it also doesn't help that SE is doing a damn piss poor job of advertising the game.
It doesn't help them that they were being so nuts about NDA enforcement, and most MMO's this close to release have had way more information about them released already at this point. Info on XIV is still pretty sketchy; even many conversations here shows this. People are still saying "I hope they do this, I wonder if it does that" about things that really should be known by now. I mean seriously, we're under 3 months till worldwide release on the PC. Way more should be out there about fine details.
To be honest though, consider this from SE's perspective. They're probably fully aware that most of their subscriber base, that will be long term, will come from Japan and Asian markets. And those will be PS3 users, not PC. They will have 4-5 months of PC "testing" before it goes live on the PS3 to fine tune things for their "core" market before any problems have a chance to hurt sales on what will be their prime platform. From that point of view it makes quite a bit of sense to release it on the PC first, which will in turn be effectively western markets first; which is where WoW reigns supreme.
Not to mention, the original release date announced earlier this year implied a December release at the earliest due to technical issues. The feedback from alpha is that the game does need SEVERE tweaking, much of which is fixed in beta but not quite enough.
The fact that the game is being released in September pretty much shows that it will have a poor buggy launch and will most likely be imbalanced. They seem to just be trying so hard to compete with cataclysm that they are willing to release this too early.
Also, as a generally xenophobic culture, and given the trend of Japanese players using console instead of PC, would it be too much to say this may be a flop in Japan? I can already see a number of buyers get upset that the game is run by Americans/Europeans and they may simply write it off and continue to play FFXI.
are they selecting a limited number for the beta or if you sign up for it you pretty much get in?
Yea it's sounding like ffXI all over again, I know the pc controllers were the worst and I couldn't change them(or figure out how) in XI so I hope they fix that.
So far it has the same horrible controls, but if you plug in a 360 controller you don't need to deal with it.

Initially, once I got used to the menus, I had no problem speeding through the controls when in combat on the PC with the keyboard. It wasn't until a bit later when I started messing with macros that I really started using the controller. I've honestly kept away from most info up until now because I just didn't want to be hanging over every little piece of news for years while it was developed so I was curious if it's still as macro intensive as 11 was?
"I know the pc controllers were the worst and I couldn't change them (or figure out how) in XI so I hope they fix that"
Did dude mean pc controls? Because using a controller in XI was absolutely self explanatory if you've ever played any rpg with a controller ever. And changing those controls were extremely simple if you used the config tool which is pretty damn easy to find and pretty damn easy to use.
Whether or not you liked using a controller is a seperate issue.
Now, if it was a mistype and dude meant pc controls i.e. kbam, ok. Fair enough. But honestly I think people forget how long the game has been out, particularly worldwide, and either aren't aware because they didn't play MMO's at the time, or just being obstinate but there was no universal MMO standard for UI or controls then like there is now thanks to WoW. From EQ to AC to AO to XI each game didn't control the same, didn't share the same UI etc. XI having that different of a control scheme wasn't that outlandish; and it is only really now since WoW has set the universal standard in UI and MMO controls that people just can't adjust to the kbam controls in XI.
On the topic of macros, XI has among the simplest macro system in the history of MMO's. Seriously the system is so straightforward and really limited that it is astounding that people complain about it to this day.
Do people not use macros in other games? Have they never really looked at the macros they're cut/pasting for WoW and other games and seeing how complex they are? I mean seriously, some of that shit in WoW is pretty much programming.
XI was only "macro intensive" in the sense that you had to use a /ma "cure" <t> in order to cast a spell via the shortcut bars. It was the equivalent of having a normal shortcut bar in any other MMO, but instead of just dragging an icon into a slot you typed a cast into a slot and you were done. It's the same thing. It just wasn't as simple. The actual macros themselves really never evolved from there much. Sometimes you threw in some /equip's to alter your gear before a cast; the occasional /wait but that's about it. It is just a hotbar. That's it.
Ok, let me clarify. In Wow, I got into my late 70s without having to stress over macros. I was good with the action bars, and doing my job with those in a group. In 11, I had around a dozen sets of macros, and depending on my role and job I was constantly flipping between those sets of macros, whereas in pretty much every other MMO ever, you can pretty reliably stick with the action bars FFXI had a severe dependence on macros, especially at higher levels that no other MMO i've played (and I've played a lot) ever had or needed. It made sense at the time especially, because it was mostly done to help with the limitations of its PS2 players. But again, with the lessons learned from other MMOs in the past several years, it doesn't seem like that should be necessary anymore.
And yeah dude, the macros were easy as hell to set up, but again, I had a dozen bars of the damned things, and that was the only way for the most part you did anything. That's what I mean. Is THAT still necessary.
XI having that different of a control scheme wasn't that outlandish; and it is only really now since WoW has set the universal standard in UI and MMO controls that people just can't adjust to the kbam controls in XI.
I disagree. Other MMOs of the time may not have used the same control scheme as WoW, but FF11's is particularly terrible and reeks of "we're console developers and don't know how keyboard&mouse work for games, so let's just map the controller to them with as little effort as possible". The thing makes Gothic 1 seem easy to use.
[edit] Provided FF11 is similar to FF14, as it's been a while since I played it, aka "my mouse is actually a tiny joystick and dragging it out of the center makes my character run in that direction. Why yes, I am the most retarded control system in the world, why do you ask?".
Wow, is that how it worked in FF11? I played it keyboard only on my laptop, so I never understood what the complaints were about.
Well yeah, if you're playing with the laptop controls and keyboard only you're pretty much mimicking controller inputs without the convenience of an analog stick.
Having the use of a mouse is really one of the best things about PC gaming and I'll be seriously disappointed if it's not a reality, again.
What im really disappointed about is that I was originally going to pick this up for ps3. I'll have to buy it on pc when it comes out, use that code to get an account, buy ANOTHER copy later for the ps3 in 2011 when it finally releases, and i'll end up with an extra account code.
