Less than ten days. I'm in on retail launch, SVER seems to be a fine faction. Definitely one of the first upgrades to get is the foregrip for the machinegun or rifle. I run machinegun medic because the MG is 100c cheaper
Well looks like I will be picking this up after reading this thread/watching videos. I completely missed the beta's do to my wife being sick/playing other games.
I will be a complete noob come release day but am looking foward to running 5 feet and dying.
I like it when people complain that your K/D ratio isn't good, even though you have 400+ XP for constantly keelong the rest of your team alive. /sarcasm
BTW - did anyone ever create the Clan/Group or are we just gonna wait until retail?

I'd say wait until retail, I imagine it would be wiped after this tournament. Also I tried entering "From Russia with Wangs" to start a clan and the name is too long.

I can't wait to play this with PAers. I'm so tired of hearing MW2-trash-talk through the headset and trying to communicate with random pubs is worthless, so I just leave the headset off.
It is cool however how you hear your squad radio chat on headphones and other squads/enemies on the normal speakers. But oh my I can't take their incessant potty mouths anymore.

RE: MW2 - Have you tried hooking up with PA'ers via the metatag "A PA COD CLAN"? Good way to play with human beings instead of those troglodytic, racist, mouth-breathing 12 year olds.
Thinking about picking this up at launch. It sounds kinda awesome. Is it/should I? I was hoping to get in on some of this open beta action but other games have been demanding my attention.
I've been having a lot of fun in the beta - I've finally decided that machinegun medic is my calling, and I'm at the point where I routinely score a couple hundred experience points every match despite the fact that, being until this point a dedicated KBAM player, I can't aim for shit.

I'm with you, my headset has seen very little use thanks to the incessant trash talking. That being said I had a good chuckle after killing a Valor player with the SVER SMG (the "Vipera"? I think it looks like a Bizon) when I heard: "Hey! Klat! Yeah you! Go back to Walmart and get a better gun!" I wish I'd had my headset on so I could explain to him that Walmart is for Americans; SVER buys its gear from shady Russians in back alleys who only accept payment in cash or vodka. Instead I just walked away as he bled out, which I'm sure was explanation enough.
Oh, BTW: Greetings everyone! This thread inspired me to (finally) create an account instead of just lurking here.
I think I'm done with the beta/tournament. On the SVER defense map, a 10-12 man force of RAVEN was sitting outside our spawn point, able to grenade and knife us as we exited. That has to be fixed. Exiting other doors resulting in machinegun deaths.

That could be a serious issue if it isn't fixed on launch day. I encountered a similar issue while playing offense against Valor: a small group camped near a spawn point was able to use grenades to deadly effect and then engage players as they moved toward the objectives. The campers were able to significantly delay our push as we were forced to secure our own spawn point before moving on. I just hope this doesn't become a game breaking issue, one would assume that a fix would not be difficult...
Posted a placeholder name in OP while you guys figure out what you want to call the clan.
edit: also added in a proper OP. J-rzez at GAF did most of the work although he used some of the stuff from my original OP when making his ... credit goes to him though
I'll make a Wangs without borders clan if we figure it will be wiped.

Base centric team games always have this problem. Short of having guns to get rid of spawn campers or just discourage it by sheer level design, it's hard to get rid of. I hope they do find a way though.
TFC had automated base defenses. Just put an NPC on a turret.
Insurgency has ramps and other shapes to prevent players from walking into spawns, and usually other shapes to prevent grenades, gunfire, and shrapnel from entering.
Can also make players invisible/invulnerable or both for a few moments after exiting the spawn, or create-one-way walls for bullets. Many solutions, suprised it took this long to be exploited. I haven't seen the old crotch-claymore in a while, but I am seeing poison gas everywhere, like it's a party favor.
Emergency air drop insertions for when the other team is all up in your shit?
Imagine it...if you could potentially spawn behind the enemy and closer to the objective, then there would be no incentive to spawn-camp (besides kills).

Poison gas annoys the shit out of me particularly on the Valor map where the middle hallway on the lower level seems to always have gas in it.
I can't wait for Feb. 1 since I'll get my paycheck and will be able to purchase the game.

All they really need to do is take out the staircase close to the Point C entrance , as it stands the defenders are normally pushed back into defending from the doors which lets the attackers push up pretty much unopposed, so they can constantly attack the spawn point and they've got a little house up the top of the stairs that both blocks them from incoming fire and can't be fragged unless you're in line of sight from the door, which lets them harass and attack the spawn point with impunity.
That said what i really fucking hate in this Beta is playing with people who don't understand the concept of defending by pushing forward. A lot of people try and hold B on the SVER map by just clustering around on top of it and getting fragged to death, not one of them looked at the terrain and worked out that the proper way to hold that point is to take control of the front yard, if you have people firing from the ridge and sitting on the back sides of the building it is impossible for the attackers to get up the front staircase because of the lack of cover, which in turn forces them to go via the train tunnels or flanking, which gives SVER the advantage of not having to run as far to get back to the fight.
I was just thinking something like 5-10 seconds of invincibility after you spawn that expires early if you attack. Even at 5 seconds anything close to the spawn would be knife fodder.
EDIT: Just noticed that Blikbok mentioned the invincibility thing earlier, I should have given him credit for that.
I too have noticed a sharp increase in the popularity of poison gas.
The poison gas is an awesome tool, it's a mediocre weapon but there's nothing better for controlling the enemy's approach and in a game like that it's definately worth bringing along even if it provides sod all direct kills.

Yeah I agree. I think the normal smoke bombs are ace so smoke bombs that hurt people are even better!
Anyone know of any magic interactive skill trees ala Borderlands we can play with to test builds? As a FPS/military noob I'm finding respecs to be awful expensive when I make poor decisions based on my limited knowledge.
I can't wait to play this with PAers. I'm so tired of hearing MW2-trash-talk through the headset and trying to communicate with random pubs is worthless, so I just leave the headset off..
Yeah, me too. I'm also looking forward to playing with people who use their headset to communicate useful information instead of just bitching about how crappy their squad mates are. I was playing with a guy yesterday who would not stop going on about the stupid things the rest of the squad was doing. Being something of a noob to the tactical FPS, i thought he might be talking about me, so i just straight up asked him to tell me what to do. He had nothing, except more complaining and talk about how SVER was better back in the day (seriously).
I think your ratio of useful chatter to trash talk/squad bitching/anything else should be at least 60/40, otherwise you're not really helping anybody.
I just finished a round wherein a squadmate of mine moaned and bitched about how poorly everyone else was doing as he was the only member of the squad with a positive kill count. I then, of course pointed out that he also had the lowest EXP of any squadmember and that if maybe he moved out of spawn his kills might help the rest of us out. He then tried to have his clan kick me from the game. When that failed, they tried to kick the squad leader. When I blocked the one guy, the others picked up the slack. The chorus of 'Fagot' when I placed third was scary in it's complete contempt of me as a person. I'm oh so glad I picked up a mic for this...

The game rewards being on top of your FRAGO with double xp; most "leaders" set the FRAGO right on B, which is unfortunate.
I'm really getting sick of sabotage, hopefully there will be enough people on suppression to get to level 10, just so I can kill people on a different map.
Anyway I'm probably gonna go stealthy shotgun route with poison and explosive resists at the end, being able to wade though ugly areas where people are just throwing grenades and hiding, then shotgunning them is ridiculously fun. Don't know how it will work on the bigger maps though.
My what a lovely evening. The kind people who are publishing mag put on an awesome event. Myself and 4 friends all got many free beers, many portions of sausage and mash(classily served in army billy tins) loads of sweets and brownies and coffee. These treats were interspersed with mag action.
We had 2 games of 64 a side acquistion, I played sver for eurogamer, my pals played raven for IGN. We won 2 nothing.
Later on we played a round of domination against MAG creators zipper, we were raven attacking valour. We lost. A shame really, I was capping points solo but lacked the support to hold them, squad coordination was impossible even though we had mics as noise levels were far too high. Regardless was an awesome experience playing 128 a side knowing all you comrades were within 10 meters.
Oh and did I mention we all walked out with collectors edition copies of the game! Heyoooooooo!
I'm really getting sick of sabotage, hopefully there will be enough people on suppression to get to level 10, just so I can kill people on a different map.
For the extended beta/ IGN tournament, there is only sabotage. I'm 17 and no new modes.
Sabotage seems to be quickly degenerating into mass spawn camping. I've been using this opportunity to play different factions (exposure to other factions narrows the mind wonderfully) and watched in frustration as SVER players camped the spawn near objective B of the SVER map. There appears to be an exploit that allows players to place claymores on the cliff just outside the spawn and one of the trees appears to be climbable. I've a funny feeling that we will be seeing some changes made to the borders on some maps; a kind of gerrymandering if you will, except that this will hopefully reign in some of the afore mentioned exploitation.
On another note: Has anyone used Raven's Battle Rifle? It strikes me as a downgrade from the ATAC 2000.
Having spent a lot of time defending B on the SVER map i'd say the best way to take B is to have one squad assault the ridge line while the other one goes down the train tracks and comes around and attacks B from the rear, this way you cut off SVER reinforcements from rejoining the fight, you've got 2 different approaches up the stairs and the squad on the ridge line will prevent SVER from shooting you off the top of the point.
From there it's pretty easy to hold it provided you can keep SVER from taking control of the front yard.
I was surprised to see SVER keeping the tunnel pretty well locked down in that particular game. I did manage to sneak through a few times however and used the stairs to come in behind the defenders, this resulted in a 7 kill streak for me. I think Raven's greatest enemy in this tourney has been a lack of organization and imagination among its leaders.
When playing as SVER I have to say that B seems the harder of the two objectives to defend; enemies have an array or approach angles and as a result they seem to appear from thin air at the worst times. In my games Valor seemed to make the best use of the multitude of paths presented to them; at one point the map fell in under ten minuets, much to my horror as a defender.

I played a game were Valor fell in three minutes. One might think this was awesome since I was an attacker, but it wasn't, barely earned an experience because well I suck at shooting things.
I think I may have finally found my calling: Commando.
I just knifed 3 snipers in a row while defending the Raven map, I also stalked and killed a few other players in the jungle\ruins areas and I must say that stalking and killing your prey is far more thrilling than confronting it directly. Perhaps all that time playing MGO will at last pay off.
Another interesting turn of events, while playing against SVER I noted that the defending players attempted to push toward the spawn points near both objectives and summarily lost both objectives very quickly. Perhaps spawn camping will be less of an issue than I had feared. Hope springs eternal I suppose. I've also started seeing squad leaders setting FRAGO in areas other than the objectives, this tactic seems to have helped everyone. While I'm loath to give Zipper too much credit I can't help but wonder if many of us (myself included) have been looking at the game and level design in a far too simplistic vein; the more exploitive tactics seem to have definite consequences. I'd like to think that such depth is built into the game but I've little doubt that such a statement is naive at best and downright stupid at worst. In the end I'm still very excited for MAG, more so for a chance to play with people capable of communicating in a coherent manner.

No you are right. On a Sver map the other night one of the squad leaders I had knew EXACTLY what he was doing to get most of us (Raven) to Point A alive (we rushed far to the right, managed to bypass all their snipers then swung back around to hit point A with a big mass of us).
The path he took I had never really thought about and it made me realize that Sver maps, while definately tough, are not impossible to crack ... you just need a team that knows exactly what it is doing and is coordinating rather than the bullshit you get in pubs.
