Unemployment Woes.... Benefits revoked after recieving payment.

I'm one of the 15.9% or whatever ungoldy high rate it is here in Michigan now and beings that my last job layed me off I decided to see if I could draw unemployment.

Everything was looking good and I received a letter of determination stating that I would get X dollars every two weeks. Even was able to collect my 1st check.

2 weeks later, when I'm supposed to call and confirm that I'm indeed looking for work and all that they basically tell me that my benefits are being revoked, on top of that they want the restitution for the money that they already paid me.

now apparently the issue stems from my job previous to the one I was layed off from, where I quit. (I was moving, as well as unfair treatment by a manager among other things.) So despite the fact that I received payment and confirmation at first that I was A-okay they revoked my benefits and wish to be re-payed.

I feel just for the record I'll throw in there that I was completely honest in my claim and in my original determination it even says [reason for seperation: Quit] under the appropriate employer

Anyone have any experience in making a protest to an unemployment agency?

Find out what rights you have to appeal it. As long as you can appeal their determination, appeal it. If they deny your appeal, deny it again. If you claim is legit - eventually you will get it approved.

With the increased unemployment the states are trying to shake people off, because every person that gives up is a person that they don't have to pay.

Think of them as an acquiantance that owes you money who isn't keen on paying up.

    Not a lawyer, but...

In my experience many people I work with as clients have been denied. They're making people run the gauntlet. It blows and sucks, but certainly appeal.

I just went through a very similar situation, and made a thread about it, in fact. The agency seems to be doing a pretty poor job of screening the claims because they are trying to deal with an unprecedented volume of them, so this kind of thing is probably happening a lot (especially in MI).

I'd suggest taking a look at the handbooks available on the web, and maybe doing a few Google searches re: applicable state laws. Ultimately I found out through my own research that I was ineligible and didn't appeal, so I have talked to the UIA about restitution. If it comes down to that for you too, they seem to be pretty lenient about repayment.
