Burning Bind coupled with a good heal all spell made me get bored with my summoner, in all honesty. I would just run somewhere cast burning bind, then run around trying not to pull any enemies attention.
I would never argue summoners are super fun. Buff, heal, that's it. <_<
I didn't want to use too many mods, especially those that affect the balance, at least until my second play-through. But then I get a decent pistol and manage to wipe all its enchants 3 times in less than 10 attempts (I was thinking there was no way it would wipe again so soon). Then I get another rare gun and waste money adding a couple sockets only to have it wiped and lose half its DPS.
Pyre is the ice blasts bigger brother for the alchemist. You get the same "spell grenade" effect, but it does around 200 dmg per second for 3 seconds. split into 3 ticks per second.
furthermore, the grenade is a splash and stick type. it fills a room with ember-napalm and anything that touches the blaze gets burned for the full dmg.
This means that weaker creatures will roast before they get to you, and stronger ones will fall from 1 - 2 hits from you.
But it really isnt for directly killing a champion, but it whittles them away pretty well.

I retired my first Vanquisher, and am playing the game through hard mode (if only to get the achievement for beating it). Having better luck in terms of gear that makes her look and function in a badass way.
Installed my first pair of mods, the first resetting the upper limit of potions/scrolls to 200 and the other making my cat black. Good times. Torchleech is a really nice program.
I haven't seen any reason to use anything else once you've got exploding shot with the vanquisher. Maybe on harder difficulties?
I played a trap-master Vanquisher up until level 30, but after that point the traps just couldn't keep up and I had to respec into exploding shot. If the trap skills were tied to your magic or dex stats and scaled better they would remain useful, but unfortunately that is not the case. The only one I kept after the respec was Devouring Trap. With 10 points in it, that trap will reduce every mob's armor by 48% and has a 19% chance to stun each mob in range every time it fires. Plus it doesn't aggro most enemies, so you can throw one or two down and still have plenty of time to fire your opening salvo before you get rushed. Devouring Trap + Exploding Shot = win.
Its a pity the rest of the trap skills don't work so well in the long term. The trap-master was fun for a while...

You guys are starting to scare me off my melee summoner build with your tales of super effectiveness and boredom....

Full blown summoner builds where you don't do anything but heal and buff your pets will get boring. If you're actually in the fights mixin' it up alongside your dudes it's not going to get boring.
The percentage lies like a lying liar who enjoys lying very much...
Had an unique pistol disenchant on the FIRST TRY. Yes, at 2%. Then, upon building it back up a little, after three more it disenchanted again. The next try? ANOTHER disenchantment at 2% chance, but haha, nothing for it to disenchant that time.
I lost 2 other pieces of gear to low chance disenchants yesterday as well, across 2 characters. Just wasn't my day for enchanting.
On the plus side, it seems like you can often turn a decent drop into something better than your current weapon with a bit of enchanting, with little risk.
I'm still planning mixing it up. I'm thinking of rolling with the minions, the melee spell, the shield spell, and maybe the lance for some long range action. Then probably sword and boarding it.
Am I setting myself up poorly if I alternate between:
(2 Strength 2 Magic 1 Defense) and (1 Strength 2 Magic 2 Defense) each level?
I never found Devastate that useful at the higher levels, though I didn't try it dual-wielding. For sword-and-shield, it's all about haste/dervish + spectral echo = own zone.

Well it's true that if you do nothing but stand back, you'll fall asleep pretty quick. Which is why it's not such a good idea for a VHHC.
Instead, just focus on one or two minions and grab some spells.
My current VHHC :
-full imps
-full golem
-pet mastery
-adventurer
-ember strike
-last aoe skill
-1 point in teleport
The idea is that the imps are just added dps and cannon fodder I, need the golem for tanking and pet mastery is just very good no matter what your build is, otherwise, in very hard, your pet will become useless past level 15.
It's a very active build, no standing behind and watching.

switch to dual-wield. I was sword-and-board until I got a few points in Devastate then I switched to dual wield and haven't looked back. Between Block and Parry, Shadow Armor, and Haste you won't miss the shield.

I think she looks sufficiently badass.
Her rifle is the heirloom I passed down from my first vanquisher. I forget the name (it's a unique, Epic form), but it's currently reading 795 DPS, slow fire. In normal mode it kills enemies in one shot.
Problem is, I'm in hard mode on this character. And the dark palace is REALLY kicking my balls in. I'm going to work on my defense stat some I guess, which I have barely touched. It's also going to allow me to equip the epic Gunslinger boots I found. Lovely +dex stats abound!
Also, I have Seeking Shot at rank 9 and I can give a full analysis of the skill now: If you're using a fast weapon and plan to stick with fast weapons, don't bother with this skill. The seeking function isn't really the draw of it whatsoever; the draw of the ability is to give slow firing weapons basically a burst fire. The gun I mentioned above makes the Seeking Shot investment worth it, because it is the destroyer of champions. If you have a fast weapon, especially fastest, you're going to be better off shooting normally (especially if you have health and mana regen on attack). Lastly, seeking shot sticks at 3 bullets throughout. >:
So I just got the game. Is it possible to respec? I hit level 11, but the first skills I bought look shitty for where I plan to go. Also, stats, I think I made a mistake dumping points into dex for my alchemist. I want more defense and magic, instead. Can I respec those?
Any worthwhile guides out there as a good look at how to build for this game?
I think the rule-of-thumb is each level you put two points in defense, two points in your main stat, and then one point in an off stat, alternating which one each level until you don't have problems equipping gear anymore.
edit: @machismo - there is a respec mod, but AFAIK it only allows you to respec skills; you're stuck with the stats on that char.

You get to a point where you've got extra skills to burn, really. I'm at the point with my destroyer where I can put points in random skills to see their benefit. I maxed out defensive spell mastery on him just for the sake of having a long lasting haste...

I made a full respec (stats included) mod that was compatible with the merchant pack. I haven't uploaded it anywhere since it was just for personal use. I would be shocked if there weren't another out there.

There's a Total Respec Mod that includes Stats and Skills. I have no experience with it, but its installed via Torchleech.
yea i will proabbly pump up her stats the next time i hop on. i have been enjoying the traps with her a lot. shame they don't scale as well though there is probably a mod for that
i had a destroyer on normal that i just added as i needed a weapon and never had the problem
So, here's an entirely different Torchlight related question.
I'm in very loose contact (i.e. he emailed me back!) with Matt Uelman about possibly using some of the TL soundtrack in a student film I am editing/doing sound design on here in Toronto. (Film schoooooooool)
I dropped some of the tracks from the game's music folder as a temp music track in my rough edit and godDAMN if it doesn't up the intensity of every single scene that it is used. (it's a sci-fi short about a portal to another dimension, I did not write it.)
Just taking a shot in the dark that he would maybe let me use a track or two for the score, what would be a reasonable offer for something like this? (other than just asking nicely?) Would Runic possibly have the rights to this music or would I want to ask Matt U himself?
Figured I'd ask here what you guys think before I totally put my nerd-foot in my mouth. o_O

If your crit is high enough ( ~ 35% or higher ) the homings shots will do more dmg on a single target, but that's about it.
So good.

NEEDS MORE STATING OF THE OBVIOUS, GOOD SIR!
Is the mix-and-match tactics approach still applicable during mid-to-late game?

Yes.
