Two gems of the same tier -> one gem one tier higher
Four gems of the same tier -> one gem two tiers higher
Three potions of the same type and tier -> one potion of the same type one tier higher
Four enchanted items -> One cracked or dull gem
Four rare items -> One dull or discolored gem
Four unique items -> One regular gem
Three Sushi-grade meat (fished up in stacks of five) -> Sushi Helm
Three enchanted rings -> One new, unidentified, enchanted ring (similarly for 3 rares or 3 uniques)
Three enchanted necklaces -> One new, unidentified, enchanted necklace (similarly for 3 rares or 3 uniques)
I think that's it, until you add mods to the mix. There are some for fish, some that add Mysterious Ember Stones (transmute along with a unique item to get a new unique item of the same type: weapons yield weapons, armor->armor and trinkets->trinkets).
... those item recipes suck. You get GEMS out of them? :?
Also, the Sushi Helmet recipe is broken on the Steam version. For the moment, you'll need a mod that fixes it.
Can you do anything with Chaos gems? I've only tried transmuting two with the exact same name but nothing happens. Haven't collected enough to try four, but even then, same name chaos gems sometimes differ in stats. Maybe you can transmute them when they are 100% identical?
Update: I just transmuted four chaos gems, they didn't need to match at all. But all I got was a dull ember. I was hoping for some kind of uberchaos gem.
+4 crit is pretty grand if you have a fast weapon. I never drop them on the weapon itself, though - always the armor. Using fire/electric/poison/ice/physical damage gems on fast weapons will send their DPS skyrocketing.

I thought the Sushi recipe also included random magic belt, shield and pistol?
So I picked up Torchlight last night, and slept at 4am.
I've tried the Vanquisher and the Alchemist; and I've preferred the Vanq skills but I love the Alch skin. Is there a mod out there that would allow me to play as the Rouge but in the Alchemist body?
I think there is actually, it's the gender mod. I haven't looked into it, but the description sounds like it does what you want. Check Torchleech.
My class preference is Alchemist first, Vanquisher second, and Destroyer last.
I have it, works like a charm, I play the male Vanquisher (executioner) and it is the Alchy body.
Only downside is the armor models stay the same, so you are a rogue in weird leather / plate / ski goggles
Wish I'd known about those transmutes sooner, I've thrown so many items at the vendor that I could've turned into gems..
Speaking of transmute, the earlier talk about methods of handling junk loot got me thinking. My favorite method of handling junk loot in a Diablo clone so far has been dungeon siege's transmute spell, where you just cast it on said junk loot on the ground and it converted it to gold (with a percentage of the value lost based on your magic skill). I have to wonder why more diablo clones didn't pick up on that idea.
So... question: I missed the very first ember quest. The dude is telling me it is in the necropolis. How the hell do I know which floor that actually is without walking ALL THE WAY down again and checking every bloody floor name?

Use the waygate in town, the sections are named there. It'll take you to the last floor of that tileset, and you can just walk up from there to find what you need.
EDIT: Alternatively, warp to the area before the one you want and go down the floors in order of the section.
That's the only thing I don't like about this game, some of the tilesets/prefab location layouts can get confusing and you often end up pondering which route is the one that continues forward and which are the dead ends to explore first to minimize doubling back. I guess you could say that's part of dungeoneering but it doesn't seem fun to me and sometimes results in missed quest items like the poster above.
Melee alchemist would be so sexy if Ember shock would perform a short distance charge at the targeted enemy after it's windup / charge time.
Also, the shield spell is starting to be really disappointing despite continuously investing in it.
Ember lance is as sexy as I thought it would be. Alternating between shock and lance is working out quite well. I'm also increasing my crit chance since lance hits multiple times.

Oh god, never play Diablo II.
TL is already amazingly straightforward. They could make it more straightforward, I guess, especially in the earlier caverns and jungle sections, perhaps. Or at least drop more hints as to the right direction. But otherwise there's a huge royal road laid down before you.

Funny you mention that, this is my first game of this style, even though I own the Diablo battlechest. Hopefully the new Diablo coming out is similarly less hardcore, but it's just an annoyance for me, not anything that keeps me from playing.
That's the nature of the beast though. I suppose you could just set up a handful of arenas to challenge monsters and bosses instead, but then that could get just as repetitive.
Three potions of the same type and tier -> one potion of the same type one tier higher
How the hell do you do this? I couldn't figure out how to break a stack of potions into individual potions.
I was kind of hoping the game was smart enough to just let me drop in three stacks of 20, and spit out a stack of upgraded potions. But no go.
Yeah, unfortunately it won't do them all at once, so it becomes pretty tedious to upgrade potions as you have to keep shift-clicking your stacks from inventory every time before hitting Transmute.
Ever-elusive? I've only made two characters (L15, L19) and I have 5 or 6 of the +4s in my shared stash o_O
Huh, I didn't see them start dropping until I had almost reached Ordrak. In fact, I think one of those was one of Ordrak's drops for me.
I haven't seen any. Maybe it is a difficulty level system? I played on Easy and saw only Deadly Chaos Gems. Maybe Hard and Normal are the only places they drop? Maybe Normal, they drop at Ordrak?
P.S. OMG. The transmute armor to gems is just awesome. I had no idea. I must try this tonight. Also, what is the highest gem?
I have gotten regular, cut, polished, and star. Is there higher?

You can get gems all the way up to Perfect
...and then improve them once more.

So what is past star? perfect? And then once more? Like, there is Super Perfect?
So I finally am getting the hang of all the game mechanics now that I've hit level 15 on like 4 different characters trying out different specs etc...
Weapon DPS... whether dual weilding or 2hander, only 1 weapon DPS is taken into account at a time. When dual weilding however you alternate hands. Due to skills, dual wielding will win out when fully specced.
Stats... always spec your primary damage stat, then defense, then magic. Or if magic is your primary stat, you will probably want to off-spec dexterity. All the weapon proc damage / enchantment or gem damage adds, are controlled by your magic stat.
Spells... you can move spells etc to the hotbar by left clicking the hotbar then left clicking the spell you want. You cannot activate spells from there without hitting the number key. You are not limited to your left click auto-attack, and two right click spells that are swapped with tab key. >_<
Holding ALT or clicking the magnifying glass next to your health bubble will turn on/off the display for all loot drops, containers, doors, levers, etc.
You always have tons of mana and it regens very quickly, teach yourself the Self Heal spell... especially if you are a destroyer, it will save you sooo many potions. >_<
If you want your pet summoning allies, teach it summon skeleton / charms. The summon zombies / flaming sword are better to teach your avatar to manually cast, as they have long cooldowns or other limitations that will require judgement for when to cast.
Hmm, well I tried selling all my greens and blues I picked up. It does get me a good deal of cash and I think I can just buy better gems from the gem dealer in town than transmute from green and blue items.
Is there any reason the Platinum rings you get from transmuting green copper rings are better? I transmuted three decent stat copper rings and ended up with one platinum ring that only has one stat, like +11 mana or +30 fire resistance. It seems like a pretty bum deal, though granted I can't wear all of those rings. Is platinum more resistant to enchant mishaps or something?
As far as I know, Platinum and Copper don't actually mean anything besides being a (mostly) irrelevant, randomly-assigned name. Transmuting 3 green rings will just give you a random green ring, regardless of if they're all copper, gold, platinum, or what have you. I bet you could have easily gotten another Copper out instead.
Argh! There's a quest monster I can't find on floor 22. The little bard robot wants me to kill a dude on floor 22 with all the lava and bridges and switches and I can't find this sucker. I cleared the floor out and have back and forth ten times looking for any switches I might have missed. Anyone know where this guy is hiding?
