I just started this game tonight... I think it's pretty good, but I am already stuck on that guy in the first area, I've taken an alternate route and opened the giant gate over the bridge where you initially teleport in, but when I go accross the bridge with the guy and his polearm, regardless of how long I last with him, he always eventually blocks a hit of mine and kills me with a one shot death thrust...
I need advice
Also, how do you guys know what the level number is #-#, i've not seen any annotations like that in the game

The level number count just goes around the circle of world stones clockwise. So world one is the first on the left, and then 2 is the next up, 3 is the top one, and so on.
You're going the wrong way if you're fighting the red-eye knight, that way leads to an optional boss which you'll want to do much later.
Edit; So, one end of the parapet leads to the red eyed knight, the other takes you past a blue eyed knight and then down the tower to the starting area. The blue eyed knight between where you come up and where you go back down is infront of the door you need to go through to actually go further into the level.
Also, you can kill that red eyed knight at a low level, depends how cheap you're willing to be, he will give you like 2k souls. You can either use magic and just stay the hell away from him, or kite him all the way to the tower with the stairs going down and make him fall, or use the exploding barrels to kill him.
I've spent so many souls repairing my armor after trying to fight the red eyed night over and over and over again.... I've gotten him below half health, but eventually I run out of moon grass, or he gets a double hit on me
I can't find the person who allows you to level up...
What is the purpose of leveling up? do the rest of the monsters level up with you?
In the early game should I spend souls on leveling, or upgrading and buying new equipment?
The main purpose of leveling up stats is to be able to utilize different weapons, armor and spells, or simply to use them better. Leveling your Magic stat increases your mana pool and your stock to remember Soul Arts(spells); leveling your Faith increases your stock to remember Miracles, the strength of your Miracles and your magic defense. Leveling Intelligence increases the strength of your Soul Arts and raises your magic defense. All stats increase Physical Resistance by a minor amount.
The girl in black is the person who will raise your stats, but she will only do so after you've completed the first level and killed the first boss(Phalanx). Return to the Nexus, talk to her and she'll direct you to the Monumental who can be reached by climbing the staircase near to the very top; she's a little girl sitting down with a lit candle in front of her. Speak with her then return to the girl in black, then you can level your stats.
There's lots of equipment you can find laying around once you gain access to the rest of the worlds. I don't think I've ever bought a weapon on any of my plays - but I do buy arrows. Lots of 'em. Get friendly with a Longbow; it is easily the strongest and most useful weapon in the game.

So i JUST bought a ps3, and i also picked this up. I was reading all the hype and how its hard and everything. So i make it through the tutorial knowing that i will die at the end. I am a wanderer. I am being totally cautious throughout the entire first level, reading every note and bloodstain. I have yet to die, i buy a ton of gear and still have around 2000 souls. Then i come across a note that is totally contrary to the way i have been playing, it says " run through" and up ahead are like 10 baddies. No way am i going to run through, i have yet to die, i am on a roll!
I draw the first two baddies and kill them. I cross a tiny bit and try to draw a third. THEN... OH, FUCKING DRAGON! Then.... later ...OH FUCK RED EYED GUY!
Yea, ok, this game is very hard and i am stupid for not heeding the notes.
3 questions: is there any way to get to the items where the dragon is chilling before he burns me up? and is there any way to kill the tutorial boss? Annnnd what is the best way to kill the blue/red eyed baddies in the first level? They seem too strong for me to be able to block and then they can block most of my attacks.
Hey guys, I'm probably getting a 60gb PS3 tomorrow, one question, I know Demon Soul's save is locked, but I heard it's only locked if you wanna change it to another PS3, meaning if I replace the hard drive with a bigger one, I can use my save just as long as it's on the same PS3 right? Thanks

Regarding your questions:
1: If you mean the Dragon roost area, which has a bunch of charred corpses with items on them, a protective red waiting to turn you into a crispy critter and a blue lazily flicking it's tail; yes, there is. You just have to be fast, and clever. You'll notice that when you start to cross that bridge, the red dragon flies over and tries to burn you to death. He actually comes out when you step over a certain portion of the bridge, and you can clearly hear him take off by the sound of his wings loudly flapping. Once you see him off in the distance flying towards you, make a run for the other area. You can usually pick up 2 or 3 items before the dragon makes it back and you have to run for cover. I also reccomend taking your armor off so you can run faster. You can also go back once the World Tendancy of that world reaches Pure White and the dragons will be gone, or you can slay the red dragon in 1-2 and it'll be gone for good.
2: You can kill the tutorial boss, though most characters will get wasted in one hit. Just stay close, strafe around him and back off when you see him fly up to avoid his butt slams. Keep hacking away or blasting him with magic and he'll eventually fall over. You'll be able to enter a new area where you'll meet an even bigger, friendlier guy who wants to give you something...
3: You can kill the blue eyes knights in usually one shot if you parry riposte their incoming attack. Longswords are easy to time for this, though it might take some practice if you haven't gotten the hang of it. I wouldn't reccomend taking on the red knight though with this tactic - spears are tricky to time and the red eyes do WAAAAAAY too much damage to play around with. There are ways to kill them though - blast them with magic, or trick them into falling to their death utilizing a nearby stairwell. Red eyes are always dangerous though, so proceed with caution.

Intelligence is actually what increases your magic spell memory (along with mana pool). Magic only increases your spell power.
so I killed the phalnyx and then was told to see the monumental above, then climbing the stairs I fell and died.... I don't know what to do for the monumental, so i'm kind of stuck, but I noticed that I lost my health gain I had for not being dead, will i have an opportunity to get that back?

Ranadiel covered most of this, but I wanted to toss out my own way of beating down the blue eyed knights - 2 handed attacks. Not with a spear/rapier though. Put away the shield/go 2-handed, and go to town. You'll break his guard and start doing decent damage. Best bet is to dodge a couple of his attacks and then start swinging.
Oh, and new annoyance on a new game - I rescued Ostrava in 1-1, cleared the way in front of him to make sure he got out safely. I died to the dragons trying to snatch some goodies later on, and when I zoned back in I heard fighting, and dropped down to see him almost dead fighting 3 enemies at once. I manage (not easily) to kill them without hitting him too much, and as I'm trying to clear the way again he blunders into a pack of dredglings and died. I kinda thought that once I got him out once, he'd stay out until it was time to rescue him in 1-2.

Sadly no, which really sucks ass. But if you're a male character you have early and easy access to the Old King set.
Just started a new Temple Knight, female. Wanted the easier gear. XD I'm going for Faith build and heavy armor, but I killed Miralda and am wearing the Binded set for now. I cheesed her pretty good. If you're dead and wearing the Thief's Ring, you can drag her out of hiding, and as soon as you run back to the top of the hill start running to the gate, she should lose track of you and turn around and start walking back to her starting point. When she does this, run up behind her, backstab her, run away. Repeat until dead.

Found this out on accident.
You can also Poisson/Etc. Cloud her from the doorway before she even sees you and wait while she dies from DoTs.
Woo. Just beat 4-1 (I've done 1-1, 2-1, and 3-1). Now I've got about 48k souls that I need to figure out how to spend.
Royal, SL 35ish. I guess I'm going Magic/Intelligence (21/18, everything else at or below 14). Loving my Crescent Falchion +1, and I just used my Doll Demon's Soul (only Demon's Soul I've used so far) on Soul Ray to go with my Soul Arrow and Flame Toss (have 3 slots). Only miracle I know is Heal (have 1 slot).
Levels:
Can probably pay for 4-5 levels - next is ~7800
More in Faith to get another miracle slot?
Keep pumping up Magic/Intelligence?
Pump up whatever stat is necessary to wear heavier armor? (I'm wearing Black armor with my silver coronet, but have my old wizard's armor and now fluted armor)
Suggestions? I don't really want to leave the Nexus with my wallet this fat (unless I go to the other blacksmith or something equally as safe).
Also, two notes:
1. I seem to be playing this game very slow. I'll take my time in a level, exploring every path and replaying it a few times before trying the boss. I've beaten 4 levels and I'm at 19 hours, so I'm on a 5 hour/level pace. I'm not complaining, but I'm betting others are playing through it faster.
2. Fearghaill's post a few posts back about Ostrava has me worried a little. I saved him in 1-1, talked to him a few times, and I left him wandering around that bottom area. He seemed to be just walking around, not heading to an exit IIRC. I know I beat Phalanx my first time, but I don't know if I died in between saving Ostrava and killing Phalanx. Ostrava's not in the Nexus, but is he supposed to be there, or is he waiting for me in 1-2? Am I worrying about this for nothing, or could I have screwed up my chance at whatever he does later on?
He's in 1-2 and you have to save him, again, to get him in the Nexus. As long as you saved him in 1-1, didn't die, and killed the Phalanx, he will be waiting for you in 1-2.
OK, good. I wasn't sure when he is supposed to show up. I just hope I didn't die in between saving him and killing the boss. If I did, though, what, he would still be fighting in that room with the brass telescope while I kill the boss, and then he'd wind up dying at some point?

Just do a backup; as long as you restore the backup to the same PS3, you can still use the save. I did this a couple of weeks ago when I upgraded my 40gb PS3.

How the hell did you get pure white/black world tendency on such a new character to open the way to Miralda?
I just killed Phalanx. That raises all world's tend by 3 which opens the way in 1-1. I killed myself in the Nexus too so if I died to her it wouldn't screw up the world tend.

You've probably spent them already, but buy Evacuate while you can afford it. It'll make your life much easier. Grass is generally better than Heal, so you can use your slot on it.
I'd get Water Veil as well, since it'll help a lot in 1-2 and 2-2.
Otherwise, some points in Vitality couldn't hurt. I'd wait to pump Faith for another miracle slot until you have a miracle that's really worth it, like Second Chance.
Also, you got your list of spells and miracles backwards.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've had Heal for a while, but I didn't have the talisman to actually use it until I got one in 4-1, so I used Heal a lot in 4-1 to try it out, but also because I was running low on grasses and didn't want to leave the level because my bloodstain had a ton of souls in it (or can you leave a level and have the bloodstain remain in there for when you come back?). Now that I can restock on grasses, I may take your advice and swap Heal for Evacuate (didn't like that Heal ate through my magic, which is my main offense).
I'll go correct my original post to fix the spells/miracles mixup so that it doesn't look like I'm totally lost.
Your bloodstain will stay there until you die again.
You can go to the Nexus, quit, or go to another world and it'll be there when you get back.

so i beat 1-1 last night, and immediately died upon 1-2 (dragon fire)
should i be doing anything important between 1-1 and 1-2, aside from spending the paltry 4000 souls and talking to the monumental? cuz thats all i really did
also holy shit i love my ps3, not to go all fanboy on it over my 360 but fuck, this interface is so sexy and the marketplace is so painless and sexy and the graphics are so sexy and the exclusive games are so sexy and the lack of ads are sexy... still loathe the playstation controller though... and i dont understand why home exists.
I'd suggest doing 2-1 and 2-2 so you can open up full weapon customization options.
5-2 pissed me off so much that I sat in 4-1 invading for about 2 hours the other day. I won most of my battles, but it gets hard when you're up against a player who's accompanied by two blue phantoms :P. I was being a total douche the whole time though, I'd fight solely with my scraping spear until I was good and sure all their armor was broken. Baiting people with a spear with your shield up, then stabbing them repeatedly as soon as they try to attack you is hilarious.
If I didn't manage to kill them with the spear, I'd just switch to my Blessed Mirdan Hammer and overpower them quickly. Now, I'm pure black character tendency... which means my HP dropped when in soul form further I wish I had known that first!

You have to kill them to lose tendency, I believe.
Well, shit. I've got all the bosses beaten and still no pure white in worlds 4 or 5. Any ideas guys?
Have you gone full black WT yet in those worlds?
I know that in certain worlds if you go full black WT and kill all the primevall demons and named black phantoms in one go it will move the world back to pure WT. I know this works for world 2. But not certain about the others.
Unfortunately other than that your out of luck. I'm in the same boat with world 5 right now.
With all this World Tendency talk, and with all the new people playing Demon's Souls, I was hoping to ask a pseudo-general question about WT:
I've been pretty much ignoring WT while playing the game, and how I'm playing it is probably pretty standard for new people. Go to a level in body form, die, play again in soul form, probably die a few times more, beat boss, get revived, and move on to another level. I've never used a stone of ephemeral eyes, I've never been invaded, and I've never joined someone else's world as a phantom. I save and quit in the Nexus all the time. I've beaten 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, and 4-1.
How long can/should I ignore WT before I start screwing up chances to get some WT-based occurrences in my first game? I know I'm not going to platinum Demon's Souls my first game through, but I'd at least like to fight most or all of the bosses, meet all the NPCs, and do most/all of the sidequests. Is this possible? I normally like to play a game on my own the first time, but when it comes to missable items, I would like to know ahead of time so that I don't miss them. It seems like waiting until clean-up time before the end boss is OK for getting PBWT, as you can just suicide a few times to get it there (are there enough stones for this though?). It seems PWWT is harder to get, since one time events like bosses are required.
Can any NG+++ players give us new guys some guidance on this, so that we don't screw ourselves over when it's too late?

Getting PWWT in NG+ won't be a problem. As long as you suicide in the Nexus after you get your body back and you'll be fine.
As for saving and quitting in the Nexus, my experience is that it doesn't matter. I've never seen my WT shift black from saving in the Nexus, and I've never seen it NOT shift white (if I'm already black) regardless of where I saved.
On NPCs, without PWWT you won't see four of them, and won't be able to meaningfully interact with a fifth. As for items, you'll miss some of the better gear for Females along with a few weapons/rings you need for the trophies.
Getting PBWT is always easy. I think that you can get somewhere from 20 to 30 eyes per playthrough. Not quite enough to all the way from PWWT to PBWT, but definitely enough to go from Neutral. The other ways to get down are killing PWWT NPCs (particularly the ones in 1-1 and 4-1 since they'll attack you) or to get your body back through being a Blue or Black Phantom then suiciding. However, if you pick Blue Phantom make sure to do it in a world you've already done PBWT for. Otherwise defeating an invading Black Phantom might mess you up.
Finally, don't forget about character tendency. The very end of the game is a good time to kill some of the NPCs you don't need so that you can get PBCT and the Foe's Ring

My bad~
Found this out on accident.
You can also Poisson/Etc. Cloud her from the doorway before she even sees you and wait while she dies from DoTs.

Options:
[strike]Spells[/strike]Miracles:
Antidote 3k
Evacuate 20k
Hidden Soul 3k
[strike]Miracles[/strike]Spells:
Enchant 5k
Protection 5k
Cloak 500
Water Veil 500
Demon's Prank 500
Just do a backup; as long as you restore the backup to the same PS3, you can still use the save. I did this a couple of weeks ago when I upgraded my 40gb PS3.
How the hell did you get pure white/black world tendency on such a new character to open the way to Miralda?

You can go to the Nexus, quit, or go to another world and it'll be there when you get back.
should i be doing anything important between 1-1 and 1-2, aside from spending the paltry 4000 souls and talking to the monumental? cuz thats all i really did
also holy shit i love my ps3, not to go all fanboy on it over my 360 but fuck, this interface is so sexy and the marketplace is so painless and sexy and the graphics are so sexy and the exclusive games are so sexy and the lack of ads are sexy... still loathe the playstation controller though... and i dont understand why home exists.
Now, I'm pure black character tendency... which means my HP dropped when in soul form further
You have to kill them to lose tendency, I believe.
You would deny someone their Demon's Souls? Terrible.
Gank some invading Black Phantoms or do a NG+ and don't die in body form in either of those worlds! WT carries over into NG+
