Uh, so I guess everyone dies to that boss in the tutorial.
How many souls does revival cost? Or how long does it take?
Well, you can beat the boss, but then even more fun stuff happens after that.
Revival costs a Stone of Ephemeral Eyes or beating a boss.
Don't worry though, playing in Soul Form has it's advantages.
Try and get the cling ring! That's a huge help since you spend most of the game in Soul Form (probably?).
It's in 1-1 I believe.
And yeah Royals are the shit. Do yourself a favor and roll one. The ring is frankly incredible.

So, how does saving work? Apparently there was no auto-save feature. Do I restart from the beginning of that hub when I load? Confusion. Pain. Lots of pain.
I knew the Tutorial would be brutal, but sheesh. I didn't even get to meet anyone before dying horribly.
So here's my predicament. I have a friend who is just endlessly heckling me to play Demons Souls. He loaned me the game and said to make a Royal because they're more powerful or something.
I ignored his advice and made a priest, kind of a melee priest. I have beaten I think 4 of the first bosses (Had to use cheesy ass strategy on armor spider) but this game is just so brutal I have prettymuch lost all motivation to move forward. I feel like everything I'm doing is wrong.
Am I doing it wrong or is this game just not for me?

When you die you restart at the beginning of the level. The game saves constantly though, as any item pickups are saved so you don't have to do them over and over. Also, when shortcuts are opened in a level they stay open.

The game is pretty damn hard, and isn't for everyone. However, it's entirely possible that you are doing it wrong as well. Generally the two classes people suggest for starting with is Temple Knight and Royal. Temple Knight's start with badass armor, an awesome weapon, and a healing spell. Royals start with shitty armor/shield, but a good magic spell and a ring that grants you mana regen.
What exactly are you finding difficult about the game?

It autosaves all the time.
When you die, you don't lose any items, just your souls, and you can get those back if you can get to where you died. The tutorial is purely a tutorial, you have to die at the end to start the game proper.

So I was supposed to get killed by that guy? That makes me feel better.

That's sort of the indoctrination into demons souls. You start the game by being cleaved in half by a giant demon and dying horribly. It's an ego check to prepare you for what follows.

You CAN beat that demon though, and get a pretty cool reward for doing so.
you soon die afterward, but man, what a way to go.
I saw this thread was close to the top of the forums and assumed there had been an announcement of Demon's Souls 2 at E3. Now I'm crying all over my laptop.

Heh, my friend has gotten good enough to where he can practically speed run the game (though he apparently still has trouble with Vanguard, who is really easy if you know the trick to killing him).
As far as auto-saving goes, the game auto-saves. You can't load but if you quit the game mid-dungeon you will start exactly where you were with the dungeon having exactly the same amount of monsters as it did when you started (it seems a lot of new players don't notice this feature).
Speaking of things newbies might miss, don't forget to loot your bloodstain (located where you were 10 seconds before your death) when you die. It has all the souls you lost when you were killed. Note, though, that if you die before recovering those souls, they are gone forever (only one bloodstain at a time basically).
Lastly, for those of you who say you spend most of the time playing in Soul Form, play in online mode. Place your Blue Eye Stone down and help kill bosses (or Black Eye Stone and kill players...). That way you get resurrected more often so you can play in body form more often so you can fight with and against other players more often. It may take more time to beat the game, sure, but damn the game is so much more fun when you involve other players.
One tip to new players: don't panic if/when you lose some souls. Those 1000 souls, or whatever, will seem like a huge amount at first, but it's a rather trivial amount in the longer run.

Any advice for handling the Spider boss at the end of 2-1?
Any advice for handling the Spider boss at the end of 2-1?
I basically would stand by the wall further back, he can't really do anything to you there, then after you feel comfortable with his rythym throw caution to the wind and sprint your ass in there and do some damage (unless you are good with bows, then just shoot him till he dies and feel like a cheap bastard), after you get 3 or 4 solid hits in tuck-tail and run your ass back to the very back of the dungeon as he will surely be about to lay down a thick blanket of suppressing fire, literally, after that is done, repeat
I think white magic works well on it, but I didn't have any at the time
Against the spider boss, I played until I was able to use the purple shield. (I rolled a knight)
Get close, stay on the left hand side in the ''safe spot'', run in with melee hit, then retreat back, rinse, repeat.
The most important part is to learn the timing of the 3-4 hits of the big flame burst, in order to let go of the block button in between hits to regain stamina.
I'm at the flamelurker now. Gonna try to beat him (again) tonight. This game rocks
Another easy way to take out the Armored Spider is to take in a bow and some arrows. There are several spots along the left wall of the tunnel at which you can hit the Spider but the Spider cannot hit you.
Sorta cheesy, but it'll get you through if you're having a rough time of it.

I think I'm finally near the end of Boletarian Palace.
AND A PAIR OF DRAGONS.
Please tell me that thing isn't the boss.
Heheheh...
Hehehahahaha...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...
MWAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
I'm laughing malevolently because the final boss of the entirety of that world is far, far more challenging, yet simultaneously far easier to defeat, than either of those dragons.

I got to Phalanx not long after, and couldn't touch it.
Those dragons just scared me more than anything else. You see them from a distance and then go right up to their nest and it's just like oh god run away run away then it flies after you.
With Phalanx, you should have found either or both of Firebombs and Turpentine in the level.
Both murder it.
Or magic, if you've got it.

Monumentally stupid question: I finally iced Phalanx(decimated him thanks to Turpentine and fire magic), and the Maiden in Black wants me to meet someone at the top of the Nexus. I have no clue where it is.
I've been all over the place, and all I found were two long drops of death and a Pantheon at the very top.
I'm pretty sure everyone has trouble finding the Monumental first time round.
hehe I'm a completionist so I actually found him and took note of his candle and..alive-ness long before I was "supposed" to.
Then I saw how many people on here couldn't find him at first, and I was like "dudes he's not that hard to find. He has a freaking candle jeez"
But I can see how it might be sort of hard to spot. The game has a very homogenous style so things can sort of blend together if you're not paying attention.

Couple more stupid questions:
There was someone in the first area of Boletarian Palace being assailed by a demon horde, but I was in no condition to help him out.
When I went back, I think he was gone. Is it too late?
Also, should I do 1-2 after Phalanx, or try somewhere else?
ah yes, that would be...um...well, I forget his name, but he's some kind of royal, hoighty-toighty knight who seems to only be capable of getting captured or cornered.
If you save him, he will appear in the next level of Boletaria needing to be saved again. This goes on for a while until....something...happens.
Save him. It's useful, I swear.

Question is: can I still save him? Can he die and be lost forever? I swear I went to the same area, and there was no sign of him.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
So bad.
I've always had success just charging into melee and spamming healing. The guy's melee attacks are far enough apart he'll never kill you.
Almost pulled that off. But he got in a few firebursts before I could eat an herb or cast healing on myself.
Get close, stay on the left hand side in the ''safe spot'', run in with melee hit, then retreat back, rinse, repeat.

I know it's possible for him to die or disappear and not come back somehow. But at this point, he should be right where you left him.
He can die. However if you beat the boss of 1-1 he might also be waiting for you at 1-2.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
