Macbook cd/dvd reading problem

I seem to have a problem with my Macbooks cd/dvd drive. Occasionally when trying to read a cd or dvd it won't be able to read it or have problems.

For example, when I first tried installing the software from my EOS cd (I created a copy of it on my desktop pc and used the cd-r copy to install it instead, which worked) and just yesterday I was writing a dvd of holiday pics for my brother to a dvd and during the verifying stage (at 10.1%) it stopped and reported that it couldn't read it. However, putting the dvd in the drive it seemed to preview all the images in finder fine.

Is this a known problem?

    1-800-APL-CARE ftw.

It's possible you've got a messed up optical drive. They may have you take it to an Apple Store if you've got one close by. In that case make an appointment for the Genius Bar there and have a little bit of time to wait and talk to the Geniuses there. You don't simply drop equipment off at the bar and walk off.
