Quickie Question: Movies- Is there a Steam Equivalent?

Hey there guys, just a simple question here. We all know steam is great for digital distribution of games. They have obscure games that you might not be able to find, they have updates and support and an actual staff to call upon when shit goes down, and they offer sales and discounts and other fun stuff.

I was just wondering, is there a video version of such a thing on the web? I like buying movies, but I don't like DvDs. They are cumbersome and the first thing that I do is rip the file to view it on my own hard drive instead. I was just curious if there was any digital distribution of videos and movies you guys would recommend. I mean, I know itunes and Zune sell videos and movies, but they rarely go on sale and their selection is hardly up to par IMO.

So is there something you guys recommend where I can purchase a movie (legally) and download it in an easy to play format that will play nice with my computer and not need 20 different types of codecs.

not quite the same, but doesn't netflix have a new feature where you can stream most movies right to your tv?

IIRC, that Netflix thing is basically a bonus for subscribing to netflix... it isn't its own thing. =/

Maybe I am just imagining that there was a steam equivalent for movies. Gosh, its such a niche to fill though. Hopefully it will be done by a non-dumb company and be awesome. Currently the Zune Store is all $10 for a movie, $20 for HD. =/

    Unfortunatly, not to own.

The closest thing is probably Netflix Watch Instantly. It'll stream to your computer, xbox360, ps3 (with a disk, firmware update is coming) or other netflix proprietary box (roku?). You can watch as many as you want and I don't think they ever remove any movies. As long as you watch 2 movies a month, you're basically getting your value (cheapest netflix is $9 a month)

Unfortuantly, the prices are more driven by the studios that make the movie rather than the stores that sell them and they LOVE $$$$$$.

Netflix has made it clear digital distribution is their end goal and that the DVDs are only a trojan and will be discontinued once it becomes cost prohibitive or that part of their business slips.

Netflix is in the business of Movies not Delivering DVDs to your door or Streaming to your Xbox, the Harvard Business Review about three or four years ago *right before streaming became available* did a great article on them.

They do remove movies from the Instant Watch list; it seems like it's more of a rotating roster of movies - at least the popular movies. I'm pretty sure the Starz list changes from time to time. A lot of the more niche movies (documentaries, etc) seem to be on there for good though.

I stand corrected. I don't actually have Netflix but wish I did (stupid no Canada access).

Yeah, as best I can figure, Netflix has a stable of movies that they gained the rights to stream, that are on there more or less permanently. Unfortunately, this selection truly blew chunks. In order to bolster their selection in time for their 360 debut, they partnered up with Starz, and these movies seem to rotate in and out, though 9 times out of 10, when a movie is about to be removed, it'll usually be renewed for streaming.

I actually had about 60 movies list that they were coming off of IV as of 1/1/10, but now that list has shrunk to about 30 movies, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that shrink even further before midnight tonight.

If not, they come back a month or two later - Terminator 2 did this.
