TSR is somewhere in Texas? Tell me where. I need to drive to your place and play (steal) that Dreamcast dev kit or whatever you had. Or at least some funky Sonic games.
So yeah... these hundreds of protos... only about 20 are sonic games. The rest are an allstar collection of sega genesis games. We've dated these to around late 1994 early 1995, so games from around that era (and well before). Already confirmed - another shinobi 3 beta and a streets of rage 3 beta.

That's still pretty awesome, though. 20 Sonic prototypes is still a ton. I hope you're going to talk about some of these, or at least link to a site that gives news on them? Is there any hope of a Ristar beta?

In Oblivion if you paralyze someone right as they try to zone into a new area (just as soon as the model starts to fade) they will be paralyzed on the other side, if you kill them in this state you will "melt" them.

We already have a ristar beta. I've posted images from it several times.
I was a sonic kid growing up... I owned all the Sonic games, sold them for a stupid reason but I've got sonic 1-3, knuckles and spinball with an original genesis AND genesis III. Plus I own mega collection on OXbox and bought SH1 on XBLA!
It's all happening on my 20th birthday. Oh snap. I'm not really sure what's going on, but hey... it's Sonic. I'm excited! The guy who is releasing these has paid thousands of dollars for beta versions of StH1... that's just... insane.
Is all of this intense and bizzare Sonic stuff nearly unique, or are there many games with not only such a rabbid fanbase, but also such a history of huge changes in development?

Well, you have to remember, Sonic has two completely separate rabid fanbases going for it.
Also, I think most games don't have more than twenty proto's. They have a few, but not that many.
Well let's be specific, Mario.
Is there a crazy underground Mario community that I am not aware of that digs through code, finding old unused game pieces, etc?

I do, but i'm too busy at the moment to make a "What you didn't know about Super Mario Bros" thread

In the Call of Duty games (not sure on 4), you die whenever you hit kill an ally. That said, your melee attacks are instant kills, so if you ever hit an ally with your melee attack you were pretty much guaranteed a restart.
However, the way CoD ally kill detection works is based on your aim. If you aim at your ally and kill them it's a restart...but if you DON'T aim at them and still kill them, it's not.
Because there's a startup time on your melee attack, if you face away from your ally, use your melee attack, and during the attack animation swing your cursor onto your ally, you can kill them with no repercussions whatsoever.
After looking up all that sonic crap on google I have to say im thoroughly impressed with he fan base those games still seem to hold. Here we are years later and people are still scouring the globe looking for beta cartridges that may contain a whole whopping two more sprites. O_o
Also as a side note I think the fan made Genocide City level is interesting.

You make it sound like they're Indiana Jones, raiding old targets or burned out Sega branches in Duluth
TSR, there may be some legal grey area but where is the broadest sense are these source codes coming from?
It's not even grey, this source code is the property of Sega. Either the source code was found on the floor, a developer leaked it, or the developer was beaten to the floor and had it stolen.
It may be a situation like with old Kenner Star Wars toy prototypes showing up on the market, where employees took them home back in the day, not thinking it'd be worth anything, and after a couple decades they end up getting put on the market when someone comes across it and realizes what it is.
You all know about the space time glitch, 99 e-tanks blah blah blah but there's some fun stuff you can do with it.
You can 1 hit kill Kraid with the plasma beam
You can 1 hit kill Draygon with the X-Ray and Plasma (since plasma goes through him and Crocomire and the first Chozo Statue, the only 3 bosses it goes through)
You can lag the game to hell and almost send Croco all the way back to his deathspot with a plasma shot.
Do the bosses backwards, and with enough E-Tanks go through the acid pool in Ridleys zone. (takes about 40)
some non time beam stuff
Early escape, lets you beat the game in about 20 minutes, only doable on Emu, since this just crashes the console version (if this isn't allowed feel free to edit it out, it just shows the glitch) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNXcBQRbf-U&NR=1
X-ray climbing, involves jumping back into a door before it closes, and allows wall climbing much like the original metroid, doable on Console I've done it but only got maybe 2 or 3 "hops" up.
You can shine spark Draygon and kill him, so there's about 3 ways to kill him.
You can get behind Kraid and Crocomire, they just launch you back though
Grappling Crocomire causes his torso to back up but his legs and arms stay.
shooting him alot with the plasma beam causes his sprite to flash since the SNES can only load so many at a time on screen.
Ridley lives in his chamber and you can see him with the X-ray visor, and even get a cheap shot with a p-bomb, but this is really common info
The murder beam is fairly common info, used in speed runs. equip all 5 beams, and you must be facing left, while charging, let go and unequip either plasma or spazer, best used on Ridley and Mother Brain (though tricky workings can hit any boss with it) easy to pull off, pain in the ass to get to work for me though, if it fails the game locks up.
or Samus, and how I Learned to Love to Break Things.
Metroid Prime 3 seemed unbreakable for about 2 weeks, which for a metroid game is a long time.
The first trick discovered was the BSJ or bomb Space Jump, which allows 2 jumps after a bombing with camera manipulation. gonna do some copy pasta from the site.
bs jump
Allows you to continue jumping in human form after a bomb or spring jump. The jump must end with an instant unmorph, where the game reverts to human form as soon as you hit C, without the usual animation.
Instant unmorphs can be triggered near most walls by moving the camera. Stand in front of a wall and put your back to it, morphing afterward. If the camera angle doesn't change, you're almost ready to do the bs jump, otherwise tap or hold Z and move around until the wall is no longer visible. Although you need to be close to the wall, leave yourself a little room because touching the wall prevents the instant unmorph from working.
Once in position, the last thing is to decide what kind of jump to use.
Single bomb bs jump: use a bomb, and about halfway up the ascent, tap down and unmorph. A widely used method in MP2, but something makes it inconsistent this time. The spring-bsj makes this obsolete.
Spring bs jump (spring-bsj): flick the wii remote up or down, holding down on the stick and unmorphing about halfway up.
2bj bs jump (2bsj): do a 2bj and tap down just after the last bomb hits, unmorphing about halfway up the ascent. Can be used to jump two levels high.
Spring bomb bs jump (sb-bsj): flick the wii remote up or down, using a bomb about halfway up the ascent. Time the next spring jump so you hit the bomb, then tap down and unmorph. Can be used to jump two levels high.
When ready to unmorph, press C and then B immediately after. If done right, you should jump again in human form. Use your second jump to further increase height and distance, following with screw attack if you have it. / end copypasta
this allowed a few minor sequence breaks, skipping some items and triggers.
The BSJ lead to skipping shooting the two buttons at the start, and some nifty tricks allowing skipping hitting a few other buttons.
At this point the secret world hunt began, since it was found that you could stand and slide on top of the drop ship after the
Elysia seed bombing
and the first world was found shortly after, in the Chozo Observatory. Found by standing on the ship while grappling the monitor.
This meant that secret worlds were possible, and possibly item skips.
If people want me to continue I will, if not I'll just let it be.

TSR, your enthusiasm for this stuff is both impressive and somewhat infectious. Looking forward to what comes out of this discovery.
Wow. That's what flu + meds will do to you. Forgive me, sir. I meant "Longhorn-ness".
Sigh.

Edit: I fail at spelling.

I heard it was, as they knew that it was the level that was going to capture the world.

EDIT: Like seriously, RIGHT NOW.
EDIT DOS: Yeah, don't link to that in the future. And to answer your question: yes.
I just found it on a sega fan site.

True you would have to make new models for the sonic characters, but the armor converters and most everything else would work just fine.
Daedroth, meet spin attack, spin attack meet Daedroth.
Spin attack, meet lava and gravity, lava and gravity, meet spin atta OMG IT BURNS! IT BURNS! WHAT A WORLD! WATTAWORLD!
This is what these threads do to me, makes me think of things both joyful and horrible.

Fire the hyper beam and morph right away for the charge bomb trick.
That's all I can think of without linking my source, but I'll fill you guys in on the interesting prime 3 stuff we found when it came out later.
