So in the possible event that I'll have to actually buy Mass Effect 2, is it possible that Steam will do the four-pack sale like with L4D2 and Borderlands? If it's around the $35 range, I'll gladly take part in it.
I wouldn't bet on it. The reason the four-copy packages of Borderlands and L4D2 sold is because those games are fun to play with three other people, so it kinda makes sense. Mass Effect 2, being a solo RPG, doesn't catch me as having that same sort of package deal available.
It warms my heart that so many people are pumped for Crackdown 2.
I still have yet to complete Crackdown on the xbox (I don't play the box very often) but it's been very fun, spending most of my time trying to get Agility orbs.
Jumping around over mountains and assaulting a base from the air with tons of grenades and rockets is a fun diversion.

You guys are all nuts. 2008 was the best year of gaming ever, followed closely by 2005 which would make the list solely on the strength of RE4 & We Love Katamari.
-2008-
Incredible year for XBLA with Braid, Castle Crashers, Galaga Legions, Geometry Wars 2, Bionic Commando Rearmed, N+, Rez HD, Ikaruga, and more.
Awesome RPGs all around - Persona 4 & Persona 3: FES on the PS2, The World Ends with You on the DS, Crisis Core on the PSP, Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3, Fable 2, Lost Odyssey & Tales of Vesperia on the 360, and King's Bounty & Fallout 3 for PC to name a few.
EA turns good & gives us two of the best games ever - Mirror's Edge & Dead Space.
Big sequels like Smash Bros. Brawl, Rock Band 2, MM9, GTA4, Gears 2, DMC4, MGS4, etc.
And a whole lot of random goodness like L4D, World of Goo, LBP, Space Invaders Extreme, Layton, Civilization Revolution, etc.
Over a year later, I still haven't caught up with a lot of the awesome things from 2008.
Also you forgot Burnout Paradise, which, a year later, I've decided is my actual favorite game of 2008. I put it at #2 on my list last year.
Well, hey, that's 2 more than I liked on your list. And I didn't put Burnout Paradise on, because I hate that game so much. It's like the developers asked my arch nemesis what all my favorite parts of Revenge were just so that they could remove them.
But hey, now we both know to never take game recommendation advice from the other. That's a plus.

2000 was the best year in gaming history, obviously.
I can only think of two games that came out in 2000, Majora's Mask and Shenmue. However, MM is the greatest game of all time, and Shenmue is up there too, so it's okay.
2002 was actually probably favorite year for gaming, but considering the fact that not every game I associate with the year 2002 actually came out in the year 2002, I think it's kind of silly to do this whole best year ever thing.
2007 is an acceptable choice for best year of all time because Pac-Man: Championship Edition came out that year. Expansion packs for my 2 favorite PC games of all time - Civilization IV & Titan Quest - also help the year's case. Also Bioshock.
I think my main problem with 2007 was that it was the year I became disillusioned with the Wii. Mario Galaxy wasn't as great as I was expecting & Super Paper Mario started out well and then turned into a complete mess of a game about halfway through. Metroid Prime 3, well, I just haven't been able to muster up the enthusiasm to play through it past the first few hours (one of these days, though). On another note, I was highly disappointed with The Orange Box, another big release of the year - Portal was good but Episode 2 felt worse than Episode 1 and the rest of the box might as well not have been there as far as I'm concerned (already owned HL2 & Ep1, and TF doesn't interest me in the slightest).
Anyway, 2008 wins out for me primarily on the strength of Mirror's Edge (greatest 3D platformer of all time), N+ (greatest 2D platformer of all time), Geometry Wars 2 (greatest shmup of all time), Civilization Revolution (the first good multiplayer version in the best game series of all time), Persona 4 (best game in the best RPG series of all time), The World Ends with You (Best weird RPG of all time), and Siren: Blood Curse (#1 reason why I want to buy a PS3). The rest is just delicious icing on the cake of 2008.
And with all that said, I agree that trying to choose a best year ever is ridiculous since everyone has different tastes when it comes to games.

....except you know deep down in your heart that I'm right and 1998 is the best. :P
98 also gave us Final Fantasy Tactics, which you didn't mention in your list, and should really be mentioned in your list of awesome things 98 gave us.

This is way back from page one, but wouldn't "Man On Fire: The Game" be Max Payne 3?
Former law enforcement guy (kinda) who's in a bad place personally ends up taking a job as private security for a rich family living in a major city south of the US border.

Anyway, Red Dead and Heavy Rain are probably the two I'm most looking forward to right now. Also hope we start getting some real info on Agent.
